It would be great if these would hold a sharp edge. I'm just not sure it's possible at this price. A trusted person would need to testify, and how do you find that person?

    • There's some reviews on the Lakeland UK site which I linked. I am deliberating whether to get this myself and also found this comment on "mumsnet":

He got it for Christmas three years ago and it is still in perfect condition, and so good that any dinner guests comment on it - my dad always insists on cutting his own bread because he enjoys it so much!

    • If you're buying this knife for the steel (which is what people should be looking at when purchasing knives), I would stay away as the type of stainless steel is undisclosed.

No one can know for sure the edge retention or chip resistance since no steel type is listed. I would guess it's the cheap stuff as good stainless blade steels cost more as raw ingots/blanks than this set.

    • You need to have sharpening skills with any knife to keep then "a delight to use".

Edge holding is a trade off between easy to sharpen vs hard to sharpen based on hardness of the metal and also the shape of the edge eg ….the steel in most western shaped knives is a similar CR-V-Mo stain resistant alloy, whether from Germany or China ….and Japanese knives feel sharper as they have a thinner taper on the edge ………

Not sure of the exact composition on this set

I own too many knives in both western and Japanese patterns :-(

      Quote:

"The steel in German knives generally have a rating of 56 to 58 on the Rockwell hardness scale for metals. The angles on the German knives are usually about 20 degrees per side.

Japanese knives are made using harder steel than their western counterparts and are rated around 60 to 61 on the Rockwell scale. The angles on the Japanese knives float between 15 degrees per side. Some are even less than 15.

    • I was just talking about this to a friend. I have a set of knives I bought 20 years ago from Lidl in the UK and they're made of very good steel. It cost less than this set (at their usual price) and holds a great edge. If they're buying in sufficient volume and not making huge markups then it is possible to get good knives at a reasonable cost.

    • Lakeland IMO is a fairly reputable kitchen shop in the UK, but I'd compare them to House or Harris Scarfe here. So you probably get what you pay for.

  • Thks, grabbed 2 sets, one for myself and the other as Christmas present ….

None left at my local store so was $8 postage first item and $4 for the 2nd set …..

Knives are a bit shorter than I like eg 22cm carving but then lots of people live in apartments with smaller kitchens and don't do huge dinner parties.

  • Bought one and pay only $48 including post , when you goto the ebay page , you will see " pay only $40 and " click show me how they have a code reduce $10 , just copy that code and paste into payment page , apply both code does not work , it will go to the higher price.

Dohhhh, that trick would have paid for lunch at Maccas :-(

    • I see a "Pay only AU $45" with the code PLAYFUL. What code did you see to get it for $40?

    • Liar no such thing

    • Maybe you had a targeted discount?

  • can anyone recommend a knife storage system? I don't like the magnetic thing on the wall though, and knife blocks are pretty ugly too

    • +1

For stainless steel, any one that catches your fancy.

For carbon steel, I would go for magnetic rack as they need to be kept very dry.

      • yeah, not many options ….either knife block or magnetic strip.

some of the blocks now are filled with plastic rods rather than slots so you can out the knife anywhere.

Other option is you can get a kitchen knife rack that goes into draw like cutlery tray and keeps knives separated but that has the issue of loose a draw or storage.

I've got 2 ikea knife blocks as you rarely get enough wide slits if you have japanese knife patterns, western blocks usually just for one chef knife for wide slots.

  • I love the coupon code - playful - with a knife set
