How good/bad of a laptop is it?

    • +1

Relatively crappy, as you would expect from the price. But plenty fast enough for basic office/web duties. The SSD (even though small) is a huge plus, things should feel quite snappy.

The killer is the screen. It's awful. Just awful. Never would I consider anything with a 1366x768 screen like this. OEMs should feel ashamed, and they've been doing this for years, they're buying screens from a decade ago for pennies and selling them off to unfortunate people who don't know better.

      • Rightio, thanks!

grb 100% right in what was said, but you also need to remember that this is a sub $300 laptop. Of course you are going to get old equipment, and for it to have an SSD at this price is pretty good.

You get what you pay for. And whilst this is older tech, its from a reputable brand, its brand new with a 12m warranty (not a refurb), and has delivery included for $275. Not bad, and still a plus vote imo.

        • +1

Correct. You can't expect to pay sub $300 for something worth triple

        • +5

Oh I understand it's cheap, and in my post I did say it was plenty fast enough for basic tasks.

But there is a difference between old equipment and low end equipment. This is a modern laptop with a modern low end CPU, modern low end RAM, and modern low end SSD. All of that makes sense for a modern low end laptop and that's not a negative. It simply fills a segment in the market which is all many people need.

But the screen is not modern and was low end many, many years ago. The practice of putting screens like this in modern laptops disgusts me. The rest of the system is easily able to run a FHD screen, and a modern 15.6 FHD TN screen is still "low end" and would be a perfect match. It might add ~$20-30 to the BOM, but even that is too much when the consumers are more interested in other specifications.

        • @grb:

Agree with everything you said, but I reckon a modern screen would add more than $30 to the price. This thing is built to a price point… and someone keen on a cheap as chips new laptop won't mind a crappier screen. I hear what you are saying though… I'd spend $50 more on a better screen if it was available as "an upgrade". But most people at this price wouldn't. Just a cheapy.

problem is if they go fhd on the screen, processor needs to be able to drive the extra pixels at a reasonable rate and you need the memory which is an issue if all the budgeted for is a n4200 …..

these pcs are are targeted at people , need that browsers, watch a few movies , a bit of cloud apps, and use their phone a lot, and also want to back up their phone locally …..you’d hate to have to reload a new phone with 30gb of stuff off the cloud.

to get to an i5 it’s 2x the prices, and i5,8gb ram and fhd it’s 3x price .

better one of these at home to do online shopping , browsing, and banking than use a phone or tablet.

Yep, built for a purpose and price. Still… would be nice with a better screen ;). Not a deal breaker with the current screen however.
It's running Windows 10 64bit OP and is a brand new laptop. $275 is pretty good.

You can get higher res tablets than this being powered by an Atom.

I was in the market for a 15.6' laptop until this deal came. Therefore i can summarise the current laptop prices on the market.
          i5 7th gen = sub$700
          i5 8th gen = sub $800
          FHD screen = sub $1150
          FHD screen + i7 8th gen = from $1300 upwards
It all comes down to the intended purpose and budget of the consumer. This laptop serves the purpose for basic computing necessities which fits my bill.
Even the cheapest low end laptop at $388 from harvey norman has an inferior spec than this.

      • Could its HDMI port offer better specs, that ChromeCast can use?

  • So how do I get the free COOP membership? Or do I need to buy the $25 Membership fee? Thanks!

  • $25 membership fee needs to be added to title pricing

@phirippu, Was about to pull the trigger for a 15.6' laptop yesterday and i'm glad i've waited. You posted this deal at a very perfect time and i thank you for that. I made the deal even sweater with a $5 off for my birthday gift from co-op. Ohh and for those thinking of buying it, don't forget to stack up with cashrewards 3.5%. Maybe can be added onto the title/description for more info.

    • Damn I forgot the cashrewards in my nerves of posting for the first time! Glad you got a great deal!

  • can ram be added?

  • Does anyone know if this would be a good replacement for an i53210m? It's a dual core 2.5ghz and this is apparently a quad core. My main need for updating is I can't play more than 30fps hd video without dropping frames and getting bad stutters through all browsers. I honestly just want a laptop I can watch youtube on at 60fps smoothly and do general internet surfing. My current laptop has 8gb of ram though and when using chrome, I can get close to maxing it out with an average internet browsing session so no need to mention that as I know I will need to throw another sodimm in her
