Great price for a great machine

  • +1

Great timing - need to replace my 7 year old version.

    • Me too! I love my current one but it's getting long in the tooth. I'm not expecting it to last much longer.

    • What goes wrong with them? Lose pressure?

      • I'd like to know too. Automatic machines sound interesting, but my ancient Rancilio Silvia and Compak grinder are both working as well as the day I bought them. It would be interesting to know if there's something that limits the life-span of the automatic machines. Seven years isn't old for an espresso machine or grinder - they should last for decades.

        • +3

Same. My Silvia is 11 years old. It's on right now and about to pull another shot. A piece of advice for those who want to "get" into coffee -> Don't buy an automatic. A Silvia or similar machine is far more superior (IMO) and will have a longer lifespan. I have a mate with a 20 year old Silvia still running untouched. (Can grab a reasonably priced second hand unit on Ebay/Coffeesnobs)

        • Yeah but the Rancilio Silvia costs about 4x the price of this right? The Grinder costs as much as this :P

        • @Maz78:

Would never buy second hand, you just have no idea what is really broken in those machines. People are selling them usually for a reason.

        • My EAM3400 lasted me 11.5 years. It was serviced once because it kept saying "insert infuser assembly" despite it being in. The error came up a few times in its last few years, but went away on its own. Toward the end, it started making coffees too hot, even after turning the temp to the lowest setting. I assume the thermostat died. It stopped being usable when it started leaking steam for inside and producing half size shots. I assume a seal or crack developed inside. Great value for $610 refurbished back in the day. I got about 4000 shots out of it.

I upgraded to a refurbished Eletta for $505 on eBay, take 10%, take flybuys 10x points, take cashrewards, take a $100 refund because they sent the wrong colour, less the $30 I sold my old one for. It has 8000 shots on the clock from the previous owner. I doubt it will last quite as long, but for ~$300, I'm very happy.

        • @serpserpserp:

Yeah, but if it lasts you 20 years, rather than starting to play up after a few years, then it's not really more expensive over its life span. Plus you get to enjoy using a better machine.

That's my logic anyway, and it's why I never go for a cheap option when it comes to appliances. Just get a good deal on the best brand, and you're in a better position long-term.

My one had loads of issues by the end, it had coffee grinds literally everywhere throughout, cleaning it properly was a nightmare. A small plastic bit broke requiring an $80 fix, because it held springs in place. Then the grinder just went, pulled it apart and put it back together and couldnt for the life of me find the issue.

Ultimately though, the "automatic" side isn't an enhancement. It's harder to clean so if you aren't using it several times a day it's or worth it (many times I forgot to clean it for a week to find mold). And there's so many parts to it that identifying the issue is impossible.

Mine was a $1200 machine too. It was just too complicated for its own good though.

        • Cheers. Any other comparison to a manual machine? Less efficient /uses more beans, can't get the same extraction etc?

        • +3

The advantage of automatic machines is simplicity - fantastic ease of use. The downside is everything else. They'll always make an inferior shot vs an espresso machine which has been dialled in - don't expect cafe quality coffee. Much less choice for finding the 'sweet spot' for coffee beans. They're generally not great at texturing milk. They have more moving parts, so more chance of breaking down, and at a higher price to repair. More maintenance.

In saying that, I'd take one any day over a pod machine, and you probably aren't going to find a decent espresso machine/grinder combo at this price.

        • @tunzafun001: they make great coffee but the complexity becomes an issue when things go, need to remember it grinds, compresses, makes coffee and ejects puck …..
you get better coffee and less cost than nespresso and cheaper than take away …. saves you money if you just want a coffee,

you won’t get a breville smart grinder and em7000 for this price is you want standalone grinder and espresso machine.

i found a similar machine during hardcwaste collection day on street ….wasn’t working as previous owners never cleaned …it as per instructions …..

        • +2

          @tunzafun001: I've had two:
          i. Original purchased 2nd hand on eBay: after 4 years of use, the machine failed to recognise the water jug was present, and wouldn't work as it sensed there was no water. Probably just a solenoid, but price to fix was prohibitive
ii. My second version purchased new 7 years ago: recently just failed to turn on. Likely a power supply or power board failure, but price to fix prohibitive.

Delonghi's warranty and after sales are great - they'll fix anything. Between my two devices, I had three boilers fail. You prolong the life by regular descaling etc, although it seems they seize up eventually even with good practice.

Unfortunately, the warranties are handled by a network of repair centres that are independent. They are great during warranty, and if you squeeze Delonghi they might even extend your warranty (I had this a few times), although eventually you're on your own (e.g., 7 yr later). What happens next is the independent service company will charge a $90+ viewing fee, which is effectively a "diagnosis". Even if it is simply the power cord is cut, they will charge this, and then cost of labor + parts. I was thus quoted $200 + gst as a baseline for any repair, once my (now old) machine was out of reasonable warranty period… that machine has set idle since.

THANK YOU EasternCulture for this deal. Happy with the machine - all devices have a shelf-life in the 2000's… it's simply not possible to make a device like George Bluth Sr's Cornballer, that works for decades, anymore…

          @wintermadness:

Interesting how people doubt pod machines. Like a manual coffee machine the beauty is in the simplicity. It'll do consistent pressure through a pod and is dead easy to upkeep (and usually can buy a cheap one under $100). Once you get some sealpods and your favourite coffee at just the right grind, two pods makes a pretty great coffee. You'll never stop going to the coffee shop for the ultimate coffee experience, but with this set up you'll go less.

@pensionday: Cheers, there's always money in the banana stand!

But I searched it already! burns it down

Amazon is really whipping out these awesome deals. I wonder if HN is quivering in their lil boots now?

    • Yup, but in general, their prices aren't great.

A few awesome deals lately though.

  • Any OZBargainers own this? Thoughts?

    • +2

Two of them just few post above you :)

      • Never mind

  • +1

    Thanks Op!!

Don't forget cashrewards for another 5%

    • Doesn't work with amazon20 apparently

      • +1

I can't use Amazon20 as I have already bought from Amazon Au. So I should be able to use cashrewards.

  • good deals

  • seems like an amazing price … any reason why i shouldn't get one :(

    • +7

      You thoroughly enjoy international roast?

      • haha i got one. i missed out on that dashcam deal while thinking over it so not gonna miss out here

  • should have wait for this instead of the previous delonghi deal.

  • +2

omg .. if i haven’t bought the expert and milk would have snapped this up

    • +1

Same here. I wish I had this couple of months back.

  • crazy good price :O

  • -4

Super automatic machines, may as well stick to the blend 43.

    • +1

International Roast is where it’s at! 😂

  • +1

Is this machine fully automated, does it clean by itself all of the coffee grindings in the cup? I am loving the small dedica machine but if this does the cleaning on it's own i am hooked

    • seems it doesn't have auto clean

  • +1

All I drink is espressos. Can i get away with a simpler model? Do I need something better? or is this as cheap and as good as it gets for drinking short blacks?

    • +4

I have the Delonghi Dedica, purchased it the first time it went on sale half price on Amazon, 4 months ago. If you don't mind the manual cleaning, then I can recommend it. 7.5 out of 10

      • Thank you, how much did that set you back?

        • +1

$127 i think. the downsides i have come across the machine so far is that you always need to refill the tank with fresh water, after 20-30 min the water starts to smell like plastic, and the other issue is that you cant make two coffees at one time. if you use the measuring spoon it overfills the 2 coffee cup thing, then you can't lock the handle on the machine or if you manage to do it, you either get coffee leaking out from everywhere or the water simply doesn't run through.

        • @Winston100s: thanks for the insight. Still haven't bit the bullet yet on a machine, but this may very well end up being the first one if it drops to that price again.

  • +1

Well there it is..my first Amazon AU purchase. Not bad for a first order :)

  • Does this heat the milk?

  • Just managed to snag one…

Just my 2 cents, and to answer a few of the above questions.
I have the older version of this same machine, but functions seem to be identical.

The coffee side of things is indeed fully automatic, and in my mind functions very well. put a cup in, and at the press of a button you get steaming hot coffee in about 30 seconds. In this mode, you can also operate the manual frother valve to get hot water through the steamer wand. You'll get about 10-ish coffees out of it before you'll be asked to clean the grinds tub. Maybe 10-20 coffees from the water tank, depending if you use the steamer much.

The milk side of things is the opposite, completely manual. It is done by pressing the steamer button, wait 20 secs or so until it swaps the internal gizmos to 'steam-mode', and you turn the manual valve on the right to control steam on and off, to manually froth/heat your milk.

PS. If you're having issues with it refusing to switch back to 'coffee-mode' from 'steam-mode', after pressing the button to switch it, you need to manually drain the remaining pressure from the milk frother, until nothing but hot water comes out, again, using the valve. This had me confuzzled for a while before I worked it out, 5 years or so ago.

Hope this helps with anyone's purchases! Enjoy! And if you're interested, I have no idea how old my unit is, I bought it second hand for $120 5 years ago, and still going strong.

  • Only difference between this one and the older model is they moved manufacturing from Italy to Romania. I bought a 7 year old model second hand for $90, going strong.

  • Are automatic coffee machines better than manual?

    • -2

Depends on whether you think a 7/11 coffee tastes better than your local cafe - the cafe can be variable as to the maker/baristas experience, the 7/11 coffee is going to be the same average/ordinary coffee from store to store…

      • That's bullshit mate. The 7/11 machines are pretty excellent, beans are terrible.

  • +1

I've had one for more than 7 years it's a good machine, I rarely use the steamer. You can get inconsistent grinds after a while. The grinder needs to be lubed with food grade grease. Take the grinder out (easy) and push down hard on the screw holding the grinder mesh. Grease the long plastic plunger at the opposite end.
A weekly clean is good. I use filtered water and haven't descaled in about 4 years.
It's not my daily machine anymore, gone for a stove top boiler but I use it about 4 times a week still.

  • I found this too https://www.amazon.com.au/these-sellers-EN680-Nespresso-CIOC…

But I really don't trust the seller with 89% positive feedback

    • +1

      This crap uses shitty capsules.

      • +1

get sealpod capsules to solve that problem.

        • Where's the best place to buy sealpods?

    • I think that listing is an error. The heading is for nespresso limited pods. No machine is called that.

  • Wow nearly bought this at full price the other day from the good guys… Shame I missed out on this deal :(

  • This will be a nice replacement to my 5yo old Delonghi Nespresso pod machine!

Nothing beats a great barista-made coffee but this is perfect for a quick caffeine hit when leaving for work, or when friends are over.

Glad I stayed out late last night and snagged this :)

  • +1

Damn, they ran out of stock just before I clicked buy.
That's teach me to wait and check with the wife first :(

    • -2

Might be not my business, but since you shared - won't waiting and checking with the wife first make the decision-making process even slower, thus you're late to the party even more?

      • Why the downvotes? Where’s the logic? Substitute “wife” with any other person, if the gender was what triggered -.

        • Ordering and cancelling means someone else misses out on the deal.

        • @CarbonTwelve: I'm even more confused now. Never mind.

    • +5

Hint for next time. Order first. If wife says no, you cancel your order at no cost.

  • +1

Kind of glad I missed out - would have end up buying one otherwise! Trying to save the $$$

  • -1

Amazon hasnt charged my card. Any idea why

    • They will when it ships

  • Damn I missed it really need a better coffee machine

  • 1 unit back in stock, but showing full price $495, anyone know if sale finished? cheers

    • -1

      Probably someone cancelled their order

  • We purchased this when it was on offer from amazon only just started using it 2 weeks ago as we had moved house and had not set it up.
Now its not working wife called the help line or something and talked her what to do but error light still stays on?
They said take to a service centre about 24 km away and they have a look.
To be honest should i really be taking it to a service centee being so new.
I already thrown away box etc otherwise i would have maybe had contacted amazon to replace.
Sometimes thats of this price should not need looked at already
