    LOL @ the twitter feed.

"Something is broken with #dellswarm Frustrating to get a good deal and then lose it (twice). Social buying FAIL"

"Not received coupon for Dell V313W Printer(…). 'Queries Email' not working! HELP!"

    all on the first page

    • yeah even when i checked last week they where mainly negative…though its usually only the negative ones who speak up…

  • Glad this was revived again :)

I think something must be wrong, when I posted it the swarms started climbing, then it went back to 1 and stayed there….

    • +1

Yes it does look weird on Dell Swarm's side. Probably not a good enough deal as I for one would not buy a wireless-G router these days.

From experience, it's a solid router if used with the right firmware. But yeah, it's old technology and there are more superior alternatives out there.

Price is ok, but I've seen them a bit cheaper at some stores on clearance. Can't remember which store though.

    • …Oh boy.
I've been using this router ever since I got ADSL 2+ a few years back but I've never even tried updating firmware.
      Better do it now!

I use one and then have a gigabit wireless N router but I run http://dgteam.ilbello.com/

        • +1 to DGTeam's firmware.
Simple enough to use, increased stability/speed.
Well worth the 5-20 minutes of your time setting things up.

        • NVM
          Google solved my problem.

        • Wow, thanks!
The custom firmware really seems to have increased speeds!
I should have done this years ago. =/

        • Yep DGTeam's firmware is highly recommended. My old DG834Gv2 is still going after so many years.

    • Pauly, are you talking about Netgear firmware, or is there some hacked firmware out there?

Edit: Just visited the DGTeam link…

      • is your picture a baby homestar??

        • It's Fatov

      • I had a bad firmware when I was using mine years back, so upgraded to one of their later firmwares (no, not the DGTeam firmware, but I'm aware of it). But this was many years ago, so I would think the newer ones would come shipped with a known stable firmware.

  • Does this support IPTV from TPG?

  • These are a really good small business modem/router IMO as they support 5 VPN endpoints. That can mean a lot when you have 2 sites with workstation clients only, who need to share data. Good buy!

However I can only add 1 unit to the swarm purchase - is there a way to get 2 or more without multiple accounts?

  • Still hasn't gone live facepalm lol

  • +1

    yeah must be popular

i don't think the 11g is that bad… just buy a good 11n router and use it as an AP…

btw. i think these routers are all completely hopeless for TPG iptv

    • yes, netgear = no iptv support. that should be an important negative for people on tpg

      • IP TV channels where crud, didnt watch them when i was with them… ohh wait, they did have the playboy channel!!

a TP-Link TD-W8960N 300m Wireless N ADSL2+/4portRouter is only $69. imo you are better off spending an extra $20 and getting wireless n.

    • I second this comment

Not sure how this modem even made it to the first page? Just a standard ADSL2+ modem at a cheap (not bargain) price.

        • I really don't consider this 'just a standard ADSL2+ modem'.

There aren't many cheap ADSL2+ modems around that offer such a simple interface as Netgear, or support for 5 VPN Endpoints (not tunneling, but VPN Termination). While this is moot to most home users, it is a godsend to small business owners with multiple locations and no real server for software VPN provisioning.

What IS missing is 802.11n, Wireless Repeating, and a removable antenna (as the older v1-3's work great with a 5 or 6 dbi upgrade).

I have lost count how many other brands I have replaced with the DG834g when cost is a factor while wanting to enhance functionality.

PS. shame on any manufacturer who has open wifi on by default, or credentials such as admin/password. At least Netgear now have a wizard that runs to fix all on first use.

  • Well, I was in the situation where I needed a replacement DG834 (the current one got hit by lightning, and 3 ports fail to work!), so joined the swarm; got the original "welcome" email, but no email when the swarm was complete. So don't know what happened, but I bought a secondhand one from eBay for $25 inc. shipping … all's well that ends well …

    • Always check spam folder — Dell Swarm coupon email seems to have tendency of landing in people's spam box.

  • Anyone got theirs? Three weeks and mine hasn't turned up.
