dell outlet store has Inspiron 15 3000 AMD A9-9400 8GB ram and 256GB SSD. $379
It would be to replace dads aging Dell thats at least 6 years old.
Surely this AMD would be fine for him,(web surfing and mail is about all its used for)

    • Sounds a good deal, do you have the link?

  • 15.6-inch HD (1366 x 768) Anti-Glare LED-Backlit Display

    ouch

  • get this
    put in $100 ssd
    put in $80 FullHD IPS
    sell for $800

hmmm what's wrong with this picture

    • put in $100 ssd
      put in $80 FullHD IPS

How is it done? Dell eBay page does not give options to upgrade.

most mainstream laptops can have their panels upgraded in 10 minutes.

if you do your homework, you can do the whole thing youself. alternatively, for a little fee I can order the right one for you, and install it too, if you are in Melbourne :D

        I have done a few already: HP's, Acer's, Lenovo Ideapad's..

not that I am advertising my services here, I do not do it for living, and my time is worth much more than that, but I hate the industry taking advantage of all the folks who are scared to take a laptop apart.

    • put in $100 ssd
      put in $80 FullHD IPS

Not worth the effort. might as well spend 850 for Thinkpad E480 or E580 instead.

      • me, I actually buy 2nd hand hardware, that's where it's really worth the effort. I would never buy a new less than i5 anything, just not worth it. but still, it's cheaper to get a refurbished last generation i7 than current generation i3

I bought this 2 week ago with same thing in mind. It's actually a bit of a pain to do. It doesn't have a hard drive bay that's easily accessible, you need to remove the keyboard, undo 2 ribbon cables, remove 5 screws under the keyboard. Flip it over, remove about a dozen screws. Push out the DVD tray, remove the screws under that. Then the hard bit which is to get all the clips off around the edge of the cover. I left one of the screws under the keyboard up and ended up snapping the thing you screw into :(. Nothing a bit of glue didn't fix. Then the hard drive has 4 screws to remove the tray and 4 more take the hard drive out. The HDD connecter is a biatch to pull out and I was afraid i would rip the ribbon. Then you gotta put it all back in and hope it works. oh and if you find a clear plastic bit that has fallen out, that's the LED for the power lights, I had to scour the manual and videos online to figure that out :p. All in all took me about 3hrs of pain.

      • oh i forgot to mention the HD is slowassed. REALLY REALLY SLOW. It has 5 partitions too. Was bit of a pain to copy across but you probably don't need those extra partitions, they are probably for flashing the laptop back to factory and running diagnostics.

        • thank you for letting me know! last time I had a Dell was 2013, an Inspiron 13. It was very hard to take apart as well. I have been avoiding Dell's since then.

actually, HP 250 G6 is also a dog to pull apart. I am so happy with my latest toy, a Lenovo 310 Ideapad. It has dedicated bays for RAM and HDD, and the screen is replaced in under 5 minutes, too. recovery partition is provided as a free download, so I put in an SSD (fresh install of W10), and killed off all the partitions off the HDD, now I also have a snappy 1TB external drive for free.

So yes, it's a good reminder that not all mainstream laptops are created equal. Some are more easy down the maintenance shaft.

Getting confused :( Should I wait for financial year end deals, or go with this one?
