  • Dual sim
    2nd sim 2g or 3G

    • Not sure about the S8/S8+, but I own the note 8 and can confirm the 2nd is 3G.

      • +3

        For S8, 2nd sim is 3G too.

        • Hi is the model g950fd?
Search from internet said is 2g only…

        • +3

@kiwies555: technically both are 4G, but when operating simultaneously, the 2nd SIM is pushed down to 3G.

This came via an update back in April last year.

  • All build a shrine [chep pallet style] to dual-sim phones…

  • +1

I wonder how good amaysim's warranty repair service is like ?

    • No worse than every other grey importer, likely with more of a national network, and an extra year of warranty.

Given you're unlikely to hit any strife, I'd recommend grabbing it at this price if you don't fancy paying $800 for an S9 Plus any time soon, or grabbing a OnePlus 6 for $650-700ish when they drop.

You can always check the previous threads about these exact product sales if you want more info.

      • The major downside is should your screen dropped and result in cracked, Samsung AU wont entertain your request for it to be fixed for approx $200-300 with them. You will need to go to third party which may cost $500+ and possible not original/genuine parts.

        • +1

Smashing an OLED screen is a major problem with the tech in general because of the price premium associated.

For those that don't want to invest in a properly gripped or protective casing, I'd suggest getting their OLED phone on a plan and paying for accidental damage cover.

Paying $150 more just for the opportunity to pay $250 less when an accident happens is just silly.

        • @jasswolf: Please note the cover you referring to is only for the first year. If 2 years, its rather pricey.

      • +1

        $800 for an S9 Plus

        Where?

        • +1

'any time soon', namely when the Note 9 hits the shelves in August.

      • Please point us in the direction of an S9 Plus for $800.

  • I think this is the cheapest direct import note 8 I have seen.

    • +2

For nostalgic reasons remember this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/344408

$778 for AU stock have in your hand immediately if combining with 2 AMEX cashback offers.

      • And that's not an import model.

        • Every Samsung is an import. Nothing is produced in Australia, and yes, I do know what you mean, but it just sounds silly.

      • Still lose sleep over missing this deal. cry

  • +1

    Great price for note 8
Paid about $100 more 2 versions of this sale ago

Question about 3g always comes up, 2nd sim is 3g

Flashing 950FD with Australian firmware is relatively straightforward although not mandatory

Does allow Samsung pay Australia to work though

I did a write up on here about how to flash

    • When you say Samsung Pay Australia…does that mean if I travel overseas I won't be able to use Samsung Pay?

      • Just means the region is set to Australia
No idea how it works overseas

    • Just to add to this. I Bought mine from one of those deals last year.

I spent a good time researching this to see if Samsung Pay will work or not. People did talk about having to flashing etc.

I have not flashed the note8. I just setup my commonwealth card on it and it's been working. Didn't do anything to it. it just worked straight away.

    • Whats the benefit of samsung pay vs google pay anyway? I assume no issue with google pay out of the box with grey models?

  • Is the import version rocking the Snapdragon?

    • +1

Amaysim Imports are Exynos. So they are the same chipset as the Australian models.

      • Thanks!

      • so whats the diff between AU Stock and grey import? just double sim?

        • That and Samsung Australia warranty, versus Amaysim covering repairs themselves.

        • +1

@jasswolf: and samsung pay (if u use it)

        • @jasswolf:

And screen repairs via amaysim cost around $400..

        • @hopper: that can be fixed by flashing with the correct firmware via the Odin tool.

        • @Purewinter: so $100 cheaper than another 3rd party repairer? That's pretty good coverage for accidental damage.

      • Is exynos better or worse than Snapdragon?

    • Bootloader can be unlocked too

  • good price for the S8, i just paid $699 for mine from kogan

  • be careful if arrive after 1 july, you might need to pay GST + custom duty

    • +1

Amaysim say on their website that their direct imports don't incur any extra GST.

      From their Website:
      - No extra GST
"Our devices do not incur additional costs for duties or taxes. The price shown is the total amount payable and there are no hidden fees or nasty surprises -
      simple!"

But shipping doesn't take too long from them. I got mine in 2 weeks, and I purchased it during the Christmas break. So you will probably get it before 30 June either way.

    • +1

It’s for purchases after June 30th, it doesn’t matter if it arrives after this date. You’ll just need an invoice with the purchase date, and it will be released by customs without incurring GST (if it enters the country after June 30 - invoice may need to be provided to shipping provider via email as they are the ones who collect taxes on behalf of customs).

    • +2

A good reminder, but it's the date of payment and not the date of the goods arriving in Australia that matters. At least that's what ATO has on their website.

  • how do we get a tax invoice

  • I wonder how screen protection works if you buy with AMEX which has screen protection insurance.
Since you'll have to fix it via a third party they still should accept right?

    • Wondering the same

      • I have bought Note 8 around 7 months ago from Kogan on my Amex essentials card which has the screen protection insurance.
Hope i never have to use it.It should also extend my warranty by one more year.

  • how long does shipping take? I'm going overseas on 2nd Jul, should I get it before that? (ebay quotes upto 10 Jul)

    • I got mine in exactly two weeks from order date, and that was during the Christmas period. So I would estimate that the maximum shipping time would be 3 weeks.

  • It'I am waiting for EFOY deal from Optus. A $59 outright S9 + A gift card would be amazing. It's currently $59 on the lease plan.

  • +2

Careful with Amaysim purchases over $1000.

Even if the coupon brings it down to below $1000, they won't mark the customs declaration so that there's no GST payable. I'm currently involved in a dispute with them where they can't see the final amount I've paid.

    (Bought a S9+ Dual Sim)

    • That is so weird. They literally say that you do not need to pay any "extra GST or Taxes" on imported devices. Did you bring it up with Amaysim?

      • Yes. They won't mark the package under $1,000 even though I only paid $972.

Probably will end up getting a refund.

Tempted to neg this deal given that buyers will have to pay gst on their Notes.

        • +1

You should really neg then, it draws attention to other potential buyers.
Also may draw opinions from people who were able to get through customs.

        • +2

          @KBZ:

Thanks for the encouragement. I generally dislike negs!

        • +1

          @Pigey:
No problem, I do as well but this quite a big issue that you brought up and people should really know about. :)

    • It's an interesting issue but amaysim is correct, you should pay the GST.

Basically you paid $972 and ebay paid about $200 so the value of the phone is $1172

When calculating GST it is the value of the item that is used, not what you paid. Just because you did not pay the entire invoice total does not change the value of the item.
amaysim still invoices you for $1172 as that is what they received.

  • Avoid buying Samsung from Amaysim! I bought a note 8 cause it said local warranty, ended up breaking the screen two months in. Asked Samsung if I could pay for repair and they said my phone was from Samsung Ghana (Africa) and I need to send to an authorised dealer there. I contacted amaysim and they said they would do locally for a discount cause I bought off them which they then quote $400!
The RRP for screen repair on Samsung’s site is $260.

    Avoid amaysim!

    • +2

That's pretty reasonable considering that it's an independently imported phone… I think 3rd party Note 8 repairs are $550 locally?

      So with Amaysim it's $1220 ($820 + $400), versus $1270 with Samsung ($1030 + $250).

      • +2

Depends on how many times u break ur screen then lol

  • What is the time frame for delivery? will it get here within a week? The store description says NTN International Express post.

    • Not sure about TNT's postage speeds, but mine was delivered by DPEX/Toll in exactly 2 weeks from order date. I ordered during the Christmas period, so excluding public holidays, the shipping time seemed pretty fast. But it definitely won't be delivered within a week.

  • How does the Note 8 compare to the 8+ or the P20 Pro? Trying to get the best option while also considering cost effectiveness.

  • The Hongkong dual sim variety has the same hardware with the mainland China variety.
So I believe they had the Snapdragon cpu.
And it is differ from the oz variety, which has a exynos cpu , there is no possibility to reflash them with a aus fireware.
So you can not use samsung pay with a aus bank card.
But you can surely use google pay, and apps provided by the banks.

    ====

I got a aus stock s9 plus, and can not use the chinese version of samsung pay ; Hopefully I can add china unionpay card

    • This is incorrect, I can confirm that Amaysim sells the Exynos versions of the Galaxy Note 8, S8 and S8+. So it is the same hardware as the Australian Phone, but as an added bonus you have the option for dual sim support. I have the Note 8 from Amaysim and flashed the Australian Firmware on it. Some other Hong Kong sellers use the Snapdragon Chinese versions but not Amaysim.

  • Can you still get updates through Samsung with the grey import?

    • Yes, updates work as normal out of the box.

      On a side note:
The only thing is Samsung Pay is in another language out of the box, so if you want the Australian Samsung Pay, you can flash Australian Stock Firmware (XSA) really easily using this video tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnYF-OLVnDY

It takes about 10 min to flash the firmware, and once you do you have the official Australian Firmware, you will still receive updates as usual.

But flashing Australian Firmware is entirely optional and is only really needed if you want to use Samsung Pay. I did it on my Note 8 from Amaysim and everything working fine and I am receiving updates every month or so.
