They waved the early exit fees on the Virgin Contract

Including those people repaying off a handset ???

    • +1

I was on a SIM only Virgin plan

    • +6

My wife had $116 waived including handset.

      • I doubt they're going to wave an iphone 8 plus 3 months into a 24 month plan…

        • +1

they might in 15 months time

        • @deego:

I won't hold my breath in the meantime.

        • +1

          @jv:

          Why not try and see?

          Why not try and see?

          OK

        • +1

@jv: Just switched to $30 SIM Only, I had my $294 waived.

        • I think you have to be between 18-24 months into your contract for them to waive it.

    • Yes they waived off 5 months (325$) for me. I just signed up to the 50$ sim only plan and I get 40gb of data and free netflix, optus sport, stan and spotify streaming.

      • Can I asked at what stage it does we are waiting this amount…?

    • you just have to pay the balance of your handset repayments, but otherwise you can exit any plan early.

  • +5

Yeah SIM only plans are looking decent. Hoping Telstra will jump onboard and offer good incentives to switch.

    • +2

Makes the amaysim plans at 5GB for $30 look expensive.

    • Unless you actually travel to spots without Optus coverage, I'd stick with Optus.

Switched back from Optus to Telstra two months ago and already have had two peak time network outages with Telstra. Plus several other times my 4G data connection has been very laggy. Not worth paying a premium price for it at all.

  • +4

Note that the Netflix streaming is for SD only, acceptable on a mobile of course but should be noted otherwise you're burning you're allowance.

I've got this same plan but costing me $30 pm with 17GB.

    • Oooh didn't realise, thanks for the heads up!

    • My $30 plan only gives me 15GB. How did you get an extra two?

      • Same lol. Also interested.

        • I'm currently with Virgin on a sim only plan paying $32 pm for 20gb. So it's a bit dissappointing to be offered 15gb for $30 😒

        • +3

@lyle88: Well My understanding is they are shutting down over the next 18 months yh? 12 months there will be some pretty good deals.. 5G will probably be close by then..
I'm on the same plan 21gb for $32 Pm. The thing i'll miss is the rollover data TBH.

        • @StopThatBus:
Yep, Virgin the only one to do roll over data.

      • I signed up around 3 or 4 months ago with an online rep who offered it to me.

  • Bummer for me - I think it may be targeted. Optus is only giving me 10GB for $25/month Do you know if you have to pay off the remaining months worth if you're on a sim only contract? or is it only the exit fee? Currently in month 3 of a 12month contract.

    • +2

I'd say it'd be a straight port, Optus aren't losing any coin. You may need to start the contract over again though? If they charged you fees on a telco that is collapsing the ACCC would be straight up their backside again

      • +2

Just got off Optus chat support they said that there is no fee for VIRGIN SIM only plans (YAY for me) and they are allowing upgrades for people on their 18th month or higher of a 24mth plan

      • +7

Except Virgin isn’t “collapsing”; it’s been profitable to this day, just not profitable enough to justify the 20 year renewal of the ‘Virgin’ license.

        • +1

Ahh, I wondered why Optus was shuttering them.. Didn't factor on a Licence fee to use the Virgin name.
Still surprised they're not just rebranding/repositioning Virgin to a Budget Optus brand to compete against the resellers a la Telstra:Belong

        • +2

@scubacoles: Catch Connect is owned by Optus. Looks to me like they are taking the opportunity to consolidate their Virgin customer base while still offering a separate low-price brand.

  • I started my virgin plan like 3 months ago. Can I get out without incurring anything? Its a sim-only plan

    • check the link - it gives you a 'somewhat' personalised offer.

    • according to the people on Optus chat support you can. You may want to double check

    • +1

On my offer it said it'd waive my early termination fee.

    • Wait for the targeted offer, I just got mine today.

  • +1

How did you get $25 for 15gb? The article you link to says that’s $30 a month. The body of the deal says 10gb a month. ???

    • +1

Curious to know as well.. I just jumped over and only was offered $30/15GB

    • +4

I think the offers may be linked to the current Virgin plan you were on.

      Since I was on a $26 p/m plan they offered me a $25 plan this means they;

      • beat the cost by $1
      • increase my data by 5GB (5GB to 10GB) - I'll fix the title
      • added data-free video (Virgin were offering audio)
      • added Optus sport (great with the WC round the corner)
      • Since I was on a $26 p/m plan they offered me a $25 plan this means they;

        beat the cost by $1

        Interesting… I was on the $32 for 12GB

The free streaming comes with all Optus plans from my understanding anyway - meh

I was going to ask if you could share your order confirmation before I realised the amount of personal info on there.. I think I'll call them up tomorrow to see whether they can match it. Would be more than happy with 10GB

  • +1

So is it 10gb or 15gb for $25? The tittle say 15gb but the details say 10gb.

    • +1

      fixed. Soz

  • +7

Thanks OP, I’ve changed Virgin post paid to Optus sim plan.
Was paid $74/m with Virgin and now I need to pay $30/m with 15g data. They waived $204 left to pay!

  • Anyone know if Virgin would charge exit fees if I decide to leave it for another carrier now that they care closing down? I'm on a 12 month sim only plan. Still got about 6 months to go.

    • yes - I checked. Optus offers to pay out exit fee for some though

    • Yeah I would like to know as well.

I am 6 months into the $24 12-month sim only plan. I was planning to sign up for a phone+sim plan in December. But if i move to optus now, I'll be locked in to another 12-month plan. Did a livechat with optus and the rep said they won't be able to do anything about the term.

  • So anyone knows what happens if someone is on a phone + sim contract and doesn't want to port over to Optus?

(Getting out of the Plan part of the contract fee-free is a maybe, but I doubt they'd let everyone get away with a partially-paid off phone).

    • +2

From my understanding, they'll operate for another 2 years without signing up new customers. In their email they said "Responding to the increasingly competitive mobile market, Optus has made the decision to phase out the Virgin Mobile brand over the next 2 years."

By then your contract will be over and they'll stop providing service then.

    • +2

According to (https://www.virginmobile.com.au/findoutmore/) they will continue to run services for 2 more years so they will let your contract run out.

The chat guy said that if your in the 18th month of a 24mth contract they let you port to Optus early (which is no big deal to them as its not really a port since they are both the same company)

  • +2

This is an absolute killer, I just switched from Virgin to Jeenee a month ago after 7 years :(

    • Bad luck, but you'd know that optus would do something to retain as many customers as possible?

      • Optus don't try to retain customers.. They work on telling getting new activation I think they think it's cheaper.

        • What do you mean? The whole premise of business is you want as many customers as possible?

    • Just switched to jeenee too. Mind you 20gb for $36 is still pretty good.

  • Paying 29.95 and 20GB getting 10 off a 40 plan so no plans to go to Optus. I will bide my time…

  • +7

Great first post OP, and very responsive!

  • Got onto the $32pm plan for 18gb a few months back in Virgin…now Optus are offering a $30pm plan for 15gb.
    No major upgrades here? :(

    • free Optus Sport is cool if youre into the football

      • This is the biggest plus imo, it is of course unmetered as well.

    • unmetered netflix would be pretty big

  • No 10GB plan for me. Minimum 15GB sim only plan that costs $30 pm.

  • +3

optus plans offered to me are worse than i currently get from virgin.

    virgin $28.80 20Gb. $450 international calls included.
optus $30 15gb. international calls to fewer countries. none that i use. no data gifting n rollover.

    no thx optus.

    • +2

wow you still got the old Virgin plan. Virgin forced me out of the $19 plan last year. I had to go to $24 and international calls are limited to a few countries.

      • yeah ive switched between plans with virgin, they were very good at doing that even when under contract.

u can still switch to a virgin plan with 20% off currently until they close their website in mid june. e.g $40 plan minus 20%off gives u 15gb

    • +1

Yep I'm currently on $32/20GB and the data rollover is the winner for me.

      • same plan but i also get xtr 10% velocity disc.

rollover, data gifting n international calls are the winners for me

  • +1

I really want that $25 plan but can only see the $30 plan.

I wonder if talking to optus directly would help.

    • I posted the CIS above. Hope that helps

    • +1

if you cant see $25 offer via verifying your phone number, optus rep can not get it for you. they will only offer $30 for 15G

      • Did you confirm it with their support? Damn, might switch to something else then.

  • +1

Wait to see what happens as got gets closer to the final shut down date in 2 years.

I know Vodafone were practically giving away phones when they wanted us to come over from 3

  • Correct me if I am wrong - but I believe Virgin is still selling new handset for another 2 weeks?

Just checked the Optus and my Virginmobile member site and I am eligible for an upgrade ($186 waived), HOWEVER i can't help but feel that I should upgrade my handset and sign a new 24 months contract with Virgin now. Why? Well 6 months down the road Optus might "absorb" me and waive the rest of my contract, so it becomes a double dipping. Whereas if I go Optus now it will just be a small discount and business as usual…

    Thoughts?

    • Virgin will be selling only till 15th June…
Yes finger crossed. I signed my contract with handset on 28th May

    • +1

Virgin will stop selling and upgrading on 15 June 2018 so I think Optus will continue to run Virgin for 2 more years after that to cover contracts.

As someone posted above maybe the deals will get better over time but I jumped from:

      Optus $35 - 1GB 2 months ago to
      Virgin $26 - 5GB back to
      Optus $25 - 10GB now

      So I'm happy

      • "Virgin will stop selling and upgrading on 15 June 2018 so I think Optus will continue to run Virgin for 2 more years after that to cover contracts."

Sure, that's what they've announced now. But who knows? Things might change, Optus might decide to shut Virgin early and convert all across, so it might waive before contract expires, thus my whole theory.

    • They have stated that Virgin will continue to operate for 2 years from the final sell date (June 15) so the chances of them waiving your contract after 6 months are close to zero. But if you are happy with Virgin's current offers it's not a terrible idea, because after 18 months you'd be in a good position to negotiate a recontract with Optus on favourable terms, if that's your thing. But you can often get the same kind of early recontract with other providers too.

I would be looking at what you actually get compared to other providers, if Virgin has the best deal, go with them, if not, go elsewhere.

Personally, with TPG about to enter the market, I think it's a bad time to be entering into a 24 month contract with anyone.

      • +1

"I would be looking at what you actually get compared to other providers, if Virgin has the best deal, go with them, if not, go elsewhere."

Generally speaking Virgin gives the best deal (thus being with them for over 10 years). I do have another number with Optus already so naturally converting to Optus makes the most sense.

However as said if I upgrade and get a new phone with Virgin now (I mean why not when I am getting $186 waived) there is a CHANCE of Virgin getting shut down before then (thus my double dipping comment), and I think it isn't a half bad idea to take the gamble.

  • Thanks OP, got waived for cancellation fee, paid $24 6.5gb with virgin, and now signed up for $25 10gb

  • How did you all get the exit fee waived with a handset? Did you just go through online and it worked? Or did you call up?

    • The optus link above

      • Yeah that's what I mean though, did you just go through on that link and it was waived? Cos at the top mine says this

"It appears your phone is still in contract, so you can continue to use it as normal. However, if you'd like to make the move to Optus now, we've put together some plans that we think you'll love. Note that if you do choose to transfer to us, cancellation fees will apply. Please check your Virgin Mobile My Account for more details."

    • +2

Sim only plan should = no fees

18 months in to your 24 month contact = no fee

      <18 months = fees :(

  • +1

I got this, no waive of handset for me :(

    Hi <insert name>,

It appears your phone is still in contract, so you can continue to use it as normal. However, if you'd like to make the move to Optus now, we've put together some plans that we think you'll love. Note that if you do choose to transfer to us, cancellation fees will apply. Please check your Virgin Mobile My Account for more details.

  • If you go through the link to see what they offer you, the result page will show if they have waived the cancellation fee.

    • Is that part at the top? Cos mine says

Or do you have to pick a plan and go through first?

      • That is part at the top. I think you might have a bigger value for them to waive so better contact Optus if they can do something.

        • Thanks, I might go in and see them.

        • The details stated:
          Handset payout waiver:
Offer available to Virgin Mobile customers within months 18 to 24 of their contracts when they sign up to a new Optus 24 month contract and port their number to Optus. Offer may be withdrawn anytime.

          I'm 1 month short!

        • @Matcha: can you wait till next month to port?

        • @buckster:
          Yea counting down…

  • This is an awesome deal for those that can get it. I'm happy with my $30 a month with Jeenee for 4gb data, unlimited calls/text but this is even better.

  • +1

I think some of us unaable to view the $25 plan because it may only give you the similar and higher plans.
For my monthly plan is $32 so they only give me the $30 and above.
This is the same happening when upgrading plan in virgin my account

  • +1

Guess I'll be watching the world cup next month!

  • What about people who are on a phone + sim plan. What do they get?

    • They get to keep the same deal until the end of the contract. They’ll spend the next two years gradually moving over as many end-of-contract customers over to Optus as they can.

      • That's a shame. Would've been nice to get a free exit haha. Thanks!

        • Haha I'm with them on a phone plan too and got the lame "you will be charged exit fees" line.

          =(

    • If you have completed 18 months of your contract they will cover your cancellation fees
