Share SD slot with 2ndary Sim?

  • Looks like no Band 28 though, so not really such a global version - still aimed at Chinese markets :(

    • -3

I would imagine this phone has had its box opened to flash the global rom too.

      • +3

        Nope. It says global version

        • +2

Yea I see that, I'd be double checking before hand though.

    • +2

There's a band 28 version of this phone but it's currently only available in Taiwan.

I got the global version. It's great

      • +1

Yeh I am waiting for this version with band 28 to become more readily available.

        • bought the A1 ro replace broken note 4 but yeah, last non band 28 handset i will every buy from xiaomi.

This is the only forum where I have seen this; I have not been able to find any references to a TW version or b28.

Are you able to direct me to the right place?

As a side note, b28 is probably much less relevant now that 5G looks like it will be a near reality. You will probably want a 5G radio rather than b28 in about a year or so.

        • I don't see the connection. How will 5G improve things in the bush, which is what B28 is about?

        • 5g will be on different frequencies so you will still need band 28, don’t expect flood of cheap 5g handsets either as the handsets will be sold by the carriers to be supported by their chosen equipment manufactuers and they are still away off, and it might be priced a premium at first …zte and huawei at the forefront as they make more than just handsets ….

the TW handset was the redmi note 4 special version, think they called it kathy or katie ….

        • @shaybisc: you are right. I didn't consider rural coverage. I was only considering speed which is what is relevant to me (and for the majority of the populace I guess)

        • +2

@garage sale: Kate was the redmi note 3 pro iirc

        • Have a look at https://mobile.mi.com/tw/redmi-note-5/. Also the Redmi Note 5 Forum on Whirlpool.

        • @ridecwb: thanks!!

yep china and india is their main market for these, definitely not australia.

if you are after the cheap / free tpg data daily allowance check which bands tpg own and how much capacity, most seems to be 700mhz band 28.

the mi5 A1 is a little more global as it is at least android one but still no band 28 (sell some models in usa also)

xiaomi will get there as they expand into europe, some european countries already use band 28, so we should see it in some of the cheaper models eventually.

Don't forget it does have a Headphone jack and a White notification led, but it does not have NFC, which is fine for me. With 2 day battery life, good performance and a camera setup that will get a lot better (also can load gcam) it is almost the perfect mid range phone.

Mmm kinda. Lack of key features makes it pretty non perfect.

I'm looking at this price range, and a refurb pixel xl with warranty is looking like a winner for me!

      • Lack of key features

        What's that?

        • +2

A key chain? I'm not sure what else "key" features you can find

        • +4

          @ojaswinjosan:A notch maybe?

Whats the main difference between this and the redmi 5 plus? Seems a bit of a price jump for a very similar product?

    • +7

This runs a SD 636, which is around two generations ahead of the 625 and in real performance it is a solid tier or 2 above. The new Kryo cores in the 636 are really good and comparable to SD820 which was a flagship SoC found in the likes of Galaxy S7, but retain the power efficiency of the midrange 625 series chips. The Redmi note 5 pro also has dual rear cameras.

The Redmi note pro also runs MIUI based on Oreo out of the box, which I don't think is the case for the Redmi note 5 (not sure on this one)

I bought 2 for my parents from the Aliexpress March sale and they have been pretty solid. Also note that there is actually a thin clear acrylic case that comes with the phone, which was a pleasant surprise (though I had already ordered a separate case).

Thanks for your reply mate much appreciated, this is probably the better option for 50-70 dollars difference

        • Of course

    • Great Find

    • This is the best price overall. DHL Shipping though.

    • Worth adding to main post, OP?

  • Got this phone delivered last week from eglobal - enjoying it so far (paid $300 delivered). Haven't tried gcam yet - haven't found a good step by step anywhere for this model. Also, unlocked the bootloader immediately, no wait

    • Can you please share why you need to unlock the bootloader and how to do it?

      • I haven't had to use it so far, others do it to install other software - I think gcam needs it to be unlocked…it was very easy to do

      • Minimum requirement is a search engine.

    • Really hoping LineageOS becomes available for this device

      • It already is.

        • Not officially though right? Not on this list but I would assume an XDA port may have been done?

      • Why, does it annoy you when Bluetooth doesn't crash your phone?

        • I assume this is a joke but I don't get it.

        • @illumination:

I've had two officially supported (since LOS's inception) phone models (multiple units of each). Trying to use BT on either is a disaster. Crashes, lockups, reboots, etc, etc. And no-one ever willing and/or able to do anything about it. And don't even get me started on USB OTG support on TWRP, which never works either.

I spent >$2K on phones for the family, on the back of the promises of these non-delivering, disinterested muppets. My advisc now is SOS - Stick On Stock. Don't get a phone if you can't live with the OS supplied by its manufacturer. Maybe Treble will help, but I'm not holding my breath.

  • Anyone installed gcam on this?
