I use AD Block which is free and does an awesome job..

    • +9

Didn't they sell out? I think ublock is better

      • +3

Kinda, they basically allowed some non-obtrusive advertising to pay their way through and not be blocked.

        https://adblockplus.org/acceptable-ads

Regardless, uBlock is indeed the best and free option. Don't need this at all.

        • uBlock is indeed the best

Hosts blocking is system wide and uses no additional resources.

You can use Adaway for hosts blocking on Android if you have root.

      • Cite some references plz

        • That ublock is better or adblock sold out?

        • +1

blokada says they are the best ad blocker, while adguard says they are one of the best. So perhaps we should use blokada.

    • Adblock Plus allows adds when companies pay them to be added to the default whitelist filter. You can disable them after install, but essentially they allow ads by default because they've been paid by advertisers.

uBlock Origin doesn't have any feature allowing advertisers to pay their way out, so I consider it a better ad blocker.

Or grab a Raspberry Pi and install Pihole to ad block your whole network forever for about $40.

    • Does it have to be a raspberry pi?

      • +3

Unfortunately there are no ethernet interfaces on Apple pi

      • +1

No. Just needs to be a linux machine.

    • pihole wont block ads on mobile versions of youtube which sucks

      • can it handle https requests transparently?

        • Yes.

      • +3

        YouTube Vanced

    • Would doing this affect latency for l337 gaming? I assume it routes all traffic through the Pi?

      • Running a local vpn will cause latency issues anyway.

      • +1

Pihole is just a dns server, so it doesn't route any traffic. It'll just not resolve any ad serving dns queries. Very fast! But i don't find it is perfect, some ads get through.

        • Yes, can take a little tweaking but does a pretty good job out of the box. Given that it caches DNS locally it can actually speed things up a little.

        • Thanks for the info!

    • Or spin it up on a vm if you have a server at home.

I find that pihole doesn't catch all the ads I encounter however =( not too sure how they sneak through.

  • Whats the difference between this and adblock add on from google chrome?

    • adblock modifies host file, this is a vpn, so all traffic is routed through a local VPN. This is technically more effective at blocking ads. There are other local vpn ad blocking apps that are free though.

Why would you pay for it when there are so many free services out there? It also operates as a vpn so you will get reduced performance and more battery use if you use it on your phones. It will be able to block slightly more maybe, but at the cost of performance and battery.

Also who said it's the best. I hate companies that do that.

ALso heads up, some people say Android Pay doesn't work when this is enabled. That and it's a VPN, so you can only run a single vpn at a time.

    Free alternative https://blokada.org/index.html
    Also claims it's the best.

ALSO this one only works for Yandex and Samsung browser……

    • +1 Blokada the only downside is it runs as a local VPN so you have to stop it to connect to an actual VPN.

  • I use AdGuard (paid app) which works like a charm on my Android phone.

However I am looking for another alternative Free App for Android… can somebody please recommend?
Does UBlock works on Android? I cannot find any APK file

      • Thanks Heaps… will give it a shot

      • Wow. Thank you OnlinePred. I was using Adguard subscription version. Blokada is awesome.

I use uBlock in Firefox on Android. Works fine.

      • Thanks
So do you just install the Firefox add-on for Ublock (on Android) by going to their site?
There is no APK file or Central App for Ublock

        • +2

It'll be quite slow. Try brave browser

        • +1

I used to use chrome, then edge, and now firefox. The amount of useful addons are amazing. Scrolling isn't as smooth as chrome//edge, but it's still pretty smooth. And it syncs with all firefox that you have. I just wish it had pull down to refresh.

        • +1

Grab from the Firefox addons site.

    • Isn't the Adguard Paid for Android a subscription service?

      • Yes Paid for the premium license, I got it very cheap during Black Friday sale (deal from OZB).
Very happy because it can block ads inside apps too… and doesn't drain battery that much

AdGuard is from the Russians thoguh… so not sure how secure is my data LOL.
You could get the free version from Amazon App store…

I wonder if any other apps like blokada can block ads inside apps too…

Problem is that some sites now check for ad blockers and won't allow you to use their site unless you disable. Not a big issue if its free, might be if you paid for it.

How well integratde it is in the browser determines how well it can fool a site into not detecting the blocker … Hopefully microsoft put in more effort into edge, double will see much from Chrome built in, ads are googles cash flow.

I run ad blocker on my Mac, not on my PC.

    • -1

You can get around those sites that check by right clicking and using block element.

  • +1

I use uBlock Origin in Windows Chrome and Blokada on my android.

  • Private internet access VPN can filter ads. Alternatively, use Netguard on Android (has to be GitHub version).

  • Not really worth the money for me as I only needed in-app blocking on Android.

  • +1

Or you can use one of the MANY free alternatives….

You'd have to be on drugs to purchase this..
