    • Then, you should post it.

    • LOL. you compare an U for a HQ?

      • -2

LOL, Comparing a generation older HQ to a generation NEWER U processor. Outright the 7th gen is barely faster than the 8th gen U.

        https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-i7-8550U-vs-Intel…

Then if you compare processing per WATT the 8th gen U smashes the 7th gen HQ processor.

Seriously considering an 8th gen U processor for my next laptop if only for the 15W power draw.

It is not a generation older.

          8550U is still Kaby Lake.

The 7700HQ is faster than the 8550U. This is due to higher TDP. Just compare their base frequencies. The 8550U is 1.8ghz. The 7700HQ is 2.8Ghz. HQ processors are also more expensive than U.

The 8550U can turbo to 4Ghz (compared to 3.8Ghz), but it won't stay there long before thermal throttling happens. That won't happen with the 7700HQ.

Don't be fooled into thinking the 8550U is one generation ahead just because the first number is 8 instead of 7. It's a slower processor, limited by its TDP.

Outright the 7th gen is barely faster than the 8th gen U.

          "barely faster" = 1ghz, or 55%.

Then if you compare processing per WATT the 8th gen U smashes the 7th gen HQ processor.

It's wattage is lower. And that is what bottlenecks its performance. You won't be able to cool your processor enough to prevent thermal throttling.

Seriously considering an 8th gen U processor for my next laptop if only for the 15W power draw.

You're not going to be able to put it under the same workload as the HQ. If the HQ is going to match your lower workload, guess what? It will use the same wattage as your U. It can do everything your U can do, but has the option to go up a gear, which yours can't do.

Your "8th gen" U processor is not a Coffee lake. It's a Kaby-lake R which is a tweaked 7th gen CPU with 4 cores. The next two "gen" mobile processors will be from the same family of processor. They may call it 9th gen and 10th gen, but look at the spec sheet before believing the marketing.

If low power draw is the name of your game, why not go for a i7-Y processor? They use only 5W.

Btw, Dell's TDP on the 8550U is 27W, not 15W. Intel made the TDP customizable.

U processors are designed for ultra low power draw. Unfortunately that comes with a trade off. This isn't magic. If they could replicate the performance of HQ while using the power draw of the U, don't you think all HQ's will have been replaced with U? There would be no need for HQ processors to even exist. But their XPS 15 range use HQ processors exclusively. They don't do this just so that you can use up more power for shit n giggles. There's a purpose for it, and that is performance. The larger size gives it better cooling, and a larger battery to offset the increased power draw than their XPS 13 range which is only available in U.

If all you do is browse the web, by all means get your U. It should be snappy enough for that purpose.

    • with similar specs at better (or the same) prices

Well, the starting price of the New XPS 15 is $2,499.

      • Never pay full price for a Dell laptop, you can normally wangle some sort of a discount.

        • Even after 20% discount, it's still $1,999.20.

        • Like, maybe, this post here? You're not going to get the latest and greatest AND equally steep discounts. Looks like an all right deal for an XPS series, accepting that it's not the latest and greatest.

The ASUS one seems similar price with 8750H

    • +1

and is available now with similar specs at better (or the same) prices.

If you can find it at the same or cheaper prices why not post a deal for the 8300H then?

  • If only it had the 4k screen version

    • PROTOTYPE coupon does work on the 4k configurations too!

      16GB 4k model - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/391726847028

Hoping the price will soon drop further since the 2018 models are now being sold - I think this 2017 model has previously been around this price-ish before.
