Can confirm - I actually signed up to this a few months back, Amazon Echo showed up quickly and has been an amusing addition to the house.
I've also noticed my monthly bills have been lower on average, which is nice.

  • +1

Sure you get a new echo, but make sure you do the maths….

The online only plan price per kWh is much lower than this. It is sort of available if you phone up - they'll just apply some similar "pay on time" discount.

I'm currently only paying 16.8c kWh - still waiting on the first gas bill…

EDIT: just checked my spreadsheet, and updated what I'm paying

    • +1

Who are you paying those rates through?
      Do you have a link?

    • Agl are the devil… Our shop is in a Ergon area with no ability to leave and they decided to double the price over night. Nothing you can do about it….

No person should support this scumpany

      • All providers raised their prices

    • That sounds like before GST and how much supply charge you paying

  • +3

Everyone should do their own calculation on these costs. Look at your actual kWh price after discount rather than the headline 21% discount.
The reason you get an Amazon echo with this is because it is horrifically expensive.
QLD as an example I pay 18.2c per kWh ex gst.

    • This is not a reason to neg is it? Just coz its bad for you doesn't mean it is bad for others?

      • +2

I know people need to take responsibility and find what suits them the best. But dressing up a really bad rate with a "bonus" is pretty poor way to trick people.
I made a calculator based off my billed usage last year and will save about $700 this year, granted these new 30% discounts only came about because of Alinta … PRAISE BE

    • +1

I live in queensland too. Which provider is giving you 18.2 c per KWH? I would love to switch to them :)

      • +1

AGL. Choose their plan that offers 28% pay on time discount off usage. It works out to approx 18c/kWh.

        • 21% disc with echo vs 28% disc no echo
          = 18.2c ex vs 19.96 ex.

          not must diff tbh

      • AGL. The important thing to look at is the price at after discount.

I get 30% off of 26c per kWh,
Compared to this 21% off 29c per kWh ex gst.

Also have to look at daily supply charges.

Origin do a lower discount but apply to supply charge as well, so if you are a lower kWh user this may be better.

  • +2

Electricity prices vary from state to state. If you're going to list prices, you should advise what state that pricing is for.

    • Thanks for pointing that out, I've updated the post to reflect

  • +1

In Qld - all excluding GST:

Alinta - 28% discount pay on time - effectively 18.72c/Kwh
AGL - negotiated 30% after briefly churning to Alinta (thanks Alinta BTW!) - effectively 18.2c/Kwh

Keep in mind Alinta has slightly cheaper access charges if you have complex connection (eg Solar feed in and other tariffs), which is why you can negotiate 30% with AGL.

This deal MIGHT work if you don't use a lot of power - the access charges are lower than AGL's current rate of $1.00/day.

    • haha went through the same scenario. fistbump

  • +1

What's Ozbargins' energy provider of choice?

    • +5

      Eneloops

    • Xiaomi power banks.

    • Pizza and protein bars

  • I'm in NSW and I have set and forget offer that gives 25% off, while the echo one only offers 21%. The rates are the same for both. Is it right that I think Set and Forget is better?

    • +1

i think it works out to be 1c per kwh difference - so comes down to if you want an echo and what you value it at vs your energy consumption.

      • Yeah, I don't care about Echo and just care about the discount hahaha

        • You can sell the echo for some money back, or palm it off as an xmas present.

    • I think the point of the post is that you can plan change to this and then change back immediately after receiving the Echo?

      • I guess I'm not a true ozbargainer yet :|

      • Nope, read T&Cs

  • Is there any better deal in SA? I was thinking to sign up on this deal.

    • +1

The words "deal" and "SA" do not go together

    • +1

I am from SA and with alinta getting 30percent pay on time discount.not sure how it compares with other plans as I have have been trying to figure out if the are cheaper. Below was my last bill

      https://ibb.co/iThN5d

I will get 30 percent off on top of that. Hope it helps

      • But then add gst to those figures also

      • Ya i had it in my comparison sheet but in my case when I added up with supply charge, work out more expensive than agl.
        Thanks anyway.

  • I'm in NSW country area.
Energy Locals works out the best for me.

Is there anything stopping someone from signing up for the Amazon Echo then churning to another, cheaper provider quickly?

There is a 24 month term, but no termination fees…

    • +1

I'm already with AGL and, when I called and asked, they said I could totally go on this plan and then call back in a few weeks and switch to the better discount he offered me over the phone. It seems that the 'Energy Plan Period' is more like a duration for which you will receive the offer (pay on time discount, etc) than a fixed-term contract from which you can't escape without fees.

So, that's precisely what I'm doing.

      • Currently in chat to this effect, and the response I am getting is: "This plan has no lock in contract but if you'll change the plan under its plan period, the device will be taken back by Amazon."

Nowhere is this clearly stated, only that: (Taken from the t's and c's) "~You are only eligible to receive one AGL Connect Bonus, such as the Amazon Echo, per supply address during any 12 month period."

        EDIT

Apparently… "The full terms and conditions of the Amazon Echo Plan included about the device is noted on the welcome pack if you'll change to this offer now."

        MORE

"I apologise for that but this is the deal between AGL and Amazon."
"This can only be viewed on the welcome pack if you sign up."
"I understand that and thanks for your feedback. Even us here does not have a copy of a welcome pack so we cannot send it to you as this is only for the customers signing up for a new plan."

I think it is fair to say that this is very misleading….

        • I guess I'll find out when I get their 'welcome pack', then.

I can always ditch the plan within the ten-day cooling off period. That said, this discount is slightly better than the one I already had and I was actually looking to purchase yet another Echo very soon, so it's not just a worthless gimmick to me.

It's definitely a bit sketchy that they say you need to sign up before you can see the terms.

        • +1

          @nullAndVoid:

If you have to agree to something before you can see the terms, then the terms are not enforcible.

I suspect that they won't ask for devices back anyway - these things are usually bought and paid for already - how long you keep it for isn't a major concern - they're incentives to sign up.

        • It's a load of crap too. The device is shipped by Fulfilio on behalf of AGL, NOT Amazon, and Amazon is not a party to the offer at all. AGL only offers it because they have an AGL skill on the Alexa Skills Store that allows you to ask questions like "what's my current bill?"

Nowhere in the welcome pack (in fact, there isn't a welcome pack!) does it mention anything about early churning.

        • @Kyanar:

I'll risk it then, do the dodgy, and then change back ASAP.
          Worth a shot.

Signing up, it does mention these conditions, but nothing explicitly regarding the Echo…

          "Bonus Amazon Echo
You are only eligible to receive one AGL Connect Bonus, such as the Amazon Echo, per supply address during any 12 month period. An AGL Connect Bonus is an additional incentive that may be provided as part of an AGL Energy Plan which is a bonus smart home product and/or associated service or subscription (or voucher for the same). AGL reserves the right to add, withdraw or vary an AGL Connect Bonus Energy Plan on offer at any time."

        • On the main page it has a section which states

"No termination fees will apply, but we may ask you to return your Amazon Echo and pay for the postage costs if you choose to cancel your energy plan within six (6) months of your supply commencement date."

I assume this means you can't change after joining and receiving it?

        • @hcca: Yes, I had kind of thought that, too - that it's unlikely they'd ask for it back. Especially given that I'm a longstanding customer and, if I were to switch to another plan, it would also be with them. They'd have to realise that that's bad juju for them.

        • @poiterbad:
They must have changed this after I spoke with them. I swear I ctrl+f'd the site for "echo" and did not see this. Some dodgy practises afoot. Really hope I can push this with the right authorities since I joined up and will most likely cancel, using the reason that this is misleading.

  • Is there any better deal for ACT? My contract just finished with ActewAGL.

    1. The electricity prices need to be closely compared to your existing (or other alternate) provider.
    2. Victorians can get $50 Bill Credit if you do a comparison after 1 July: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/373846
    3. I don't think the Echo is really valued at $149 now; they were $119 here (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/376058) and here (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/375729)
  • +2

Thanks OP! I'm already with AGL, but switching to virtually the same plan and getting Amazon Echo is a bonus for me.

  • +1

For those who got the bonus Amazon Echo. Is it a 1st or 2nd Gen one?

    • Gen2.

  • Thanks OP, I have the below discount at the moment:

    19% Pay on time
    4% Direct Debit
    3% Double Up

Does this plan offer direct debit discount as well?

EDIT: Had a chat with them, they don't offer direct debit % on this plan, so better to stick with my current plan.

  • In SA. Can't seem to find whether there's no exit fees for the Amazon Echo electricity plan. I think staying with the set and forget series of plans is better at the moment.

    • +1

In the Q and A section at the bottom

No termination fees will apply, but we may ask you to return your Amazon Echo and pay for the postage costs if you choose to cancel your energy plan within six (6) months of your supply commencement date.

      • Thanks for that! I just checked another offer landing page rather than the plan comparison page and it seems it also has the no exit fee mentioned there.

  • +1

Does a termination fee apply if I no longer want to stay on the AGL Savers - Home Connect energy plan?
No termination fees will apply, but we may ask you to return your Amazon Echo and pay for the postage costs if you choose to cancel your energy plan within six (6) months of your supply commencement date.

    • That's not in the terms, so they can ask

  • Nice try NSA/ASIS

  • Was on an old plan with them, this is an upgrade. WIN!

  • I checked my plans and decided to switch to the higher discount version, which also had $50 credit + $50 for also having their gas with them. Sure, $49 less "value" than the Echo, but I can do more with $100 than an Amazon Echo, which I have no use for.

  • For me in VIC:

    Peak 31.900 cents/kWh
    Supply charge 119.900 cents/day

"Alexa, find me a cheaper energy plan!" ;-)

  • Anybody got theirs yet ?

    • Nah, two weeks since I signed up

  • Signed up tonight, energy companies are literally snakeoil salesman but they have good prices on controlled load 2, no extra supply charge. Will get the echo and look around later. Had a excellent deal which just ended so room to bargain again I'd say.

  • Got a text today saying it was coming in 7-10 business days, anyone else?
