Amazon currently has 20% off some Smart Home products. Discount appears at the checkout. Combined with the coupon, it's a good deal.. for a single globe anyway :)

This should be the new Gen 3 version with far better blues and greens.

It appears that the Edison Screw (E27) style is not apart of the 20% off sale, however will come to $69 with the Amazon20 coupon.

  • i get "The promotional code you entered cannot be applied to your purchase." when trying for the E27 bulb. Is it just me?

      • right..

    OK. I'll bite.

I've been watching these and the Xiaomi globe deals of late and am still a bit baffled.

Exactly what can they do that makes them worth ten times the cost of a standard white LED globe, or one hundred times what an incandescent will cost you?

    • +1

Incandescent is pretty easy to explain. They cost more than the standard LED in energy costs and you need to replace them.

As for zigbee, it is very low power and very fast to control wirelessly. The actual chip is probably dirt cheap but people are willing to pay a lot.

This particular globe lets you pick any colour temperature AND one of 16 million colours. This feature sort of isn't possible without some sort of wireless communication so you can control it remotely.

Just in case you're not aware, you need a philips hue hub or another bridge that can control it.

    • Change the colour and brightness via wireless (NB: a special kind of wireless called zigbee). Can be easily integrated into home automation or entertainment systems. Whether that's worth it to you or not, well, that's up to you. But for lots of people it's worth it.

    • For me we're working it into home automation. Garage has a motion sensor that triggers the garage light. The first 3 or 4 rooms in our house will have the lights turn on using location based tracking for the first person to return home after sunset (if someone is home already then there's no effect). Using voice commands across the board too.

Another handy thing is I've been able to combine multiple switches into one where it makes sense. For example our kitchen + living area had two switches despite being one large space. I've been able to reconfigure the space to have all lights work as one without hardwiring switches.

    • for me, it was when my daughter was first born - she was bottle fed and we would get up at night to get a bottle from the fridge and need to turn the light on. we would not have to take a hand off my daughter to turn these lights on, nor fumble around in the dark. i have them linked to a few google home devices i have scattered around the house so all we have to say is "OK google, turn on the kitchen light"

I even have an app for my phone so i can control the lights when i come home at night,

  • How's Phillips brand compare to the Xiaomi Yeelight ones that pop up with gearbest, lightinthebox etc?
With a coupon, Xiaomi ones probably go for $25+. These are significantly more expensive. Are these made in the same factory with a different badge?

    • +1

No they’re an entirely different product. Use Zigbee and require a hub as opposed to wifi.

Haven’t tried YeeLight so cant compare there, but I went with hue since I’m an Apple user and wanted HomeKit support. I tend to buy the cheaper $25-$30 non colour version though.
