AAaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnd of course I booked with QF points to Tokyo last week FML.

    • +38

cancel and reissue - only a 6000 point cancellation fee - you'll still be infront

    • -3

I was Gona post that lol.

      • Yep, and I bet the taxes etc. still make it barely worthwhile.

        • We all knew that why it is news? Lol .. oh wait they ran out of content

    • +12

and there's really not much point to redeeming for economy fares. if these were 50% off business fares then it would possibly be worth considering

      • I'd be all over that. Agreed.

      • +3

Must pull in enough suckers though for them to keep doing it.

        • I paid $2,030.77 in fees for my rewards booking!
          (2x Paris return)

        • @muncan: Ouch… i paid just a smidge more than that with Thai with no points. Flying into Paris and out of Vienna, with a convenient 36hr layover in Bangkok. Depart in a few weeks time actually. I confess using QFF points i still find very daunting and have yet to use mine.

        • @muncan:

          surely business class?

        • +6

          @lakes_8: nope, first 😂🥂

        • @muncan: how many points?

        • @sian72: all of them! 768K 😢

        • @muncan: 768k points + $2,000 that’s $9,680 for two first class return. Is it worth it?

        • @Rosace: Will report back in a couple of days

        • +5

@muncan: We have done RTW business class twice on points for 560k plus taxes. (280k points per person)
Enjoy first class! Don't forget to arrange the free limo pickups 😀

        • @nortyjak: How much were the taxes?

        • +3

@Rosace: I don't remember the taxes we paid the first time we did it, but the second time was a little less than $500 each. I think those days are gone by the sound of it. I recall that changing airports/avoiding some airports really helped to keep taxes down, we actually booked it over the phone, it took about 4 or 5 hours, and about 3000 points per person, (to do it over the phone) but he really helped us avoid many of the taxes. The telephone rep from Qantas, his name was Phil. I still remember his name as he was SUPER patient and SUPER helpful. Sorry….maybe none of this information helps anyone now, as it seems things have changed. But one thing is for sure, when we have 560k points again, this is how we will be spending them. Its an awesome experience!

        • @nortyjak: Thanks for the tip :)

        • @Rosace: Yes

        • +1

          @Rosace: Worth it!
An experience we’ll never forget, and looking forward to our return flights. Looked a bit squishy further back in working class, I enjoyed wandering down to their bar flaunting my first PJs. I did my best to get my fees worth from the Dom P2s 🥂 and Paradis Imperials 🥃

      • There is if you’re wanting to fly last minute. A return flight to London in the next few months ex. Melb costs circa $3000, compared to $1200 in October. Fly anytime on Classic Rewards and it’s $800 return. So while it wouldn’t be worth redeeming later in the year, it would now.

      • Has Qantas ever run a promotion on discounting business fares with QFF points?

    • Qantas has managed to put lots of their customers off with measures like this and poor/ indifferent customer service. I for one, wouldn't give them my business unless they improve.

    • Great article! Have booked a few ff flights to USA over the years and velocity came up $100's of dollars less while Qantas was often no better than their cheapest fare?? Sadly velocity's seat availability is now crap too but still the cheaper option.

    • Is Qantas program still better overall then velocity?

      • I gave up with Qantas after 7 years and one economy flight to Europe. In 2 years of Velocity I’ve had one business flight to Europe, one Perth to Melbourne, and several domestic economy flights. The fees on partner Singapore aren’t bad. So it depends on the individual but I certainly get a lot more value from Velocity.

so how do i use this deal i dont have qantas points can ozbargainers help me out please

    • +2

      Get Qantas points.

    • Go to Classified section in OzB and look for for points for sale. Going rate for QFF points is about a cent per point. It's not Qantas legal however it appears most single trades are not punished. I wouldn't do it more than once though .. :-( .. !

  • Has anybody found dates for SYD or MEL to Tokyo? I’m searching between the dates listed but I’m only seeing rewards flights with 35k points.

    • 35k is half price for a return ticket.

      • Yeah, but it does it in two parts - so it should show 17.5k each way.

I found the Hong Kong flights easily, 14k each way.

        • Mine comes up as 35k return when searching.

        • @whatovit: What dates? That was my original question.

        • +1

          @bern1992:
          September 12th to 19th.

        • @whatovit: Looks like a really good deal, until you get to the checkout page and have to add $300+ for fees, taxes etc :(

        • @Interrupting Cow:
Correct, the cheapest price for SYD to HKG is around $550 off peak(non school holiday)

35k = minimum $350. Not worth in my opinion

        • @Interrupting Cow: yup, that's how Qantas screws their customers. Need Royal Commission to get them

  • +6

To Shanghai its 35,000 points + $320 in tax. Meanwhile I can book on China Eastern flying on the same QANTAS metal (for 1 segment at least) for $450 and still earn QFF points and status credit (though very minimal). Go figure.

    • +2

YES you are right! TAX kills qf economy
even 50%off is still not worthing …

      • +4

That’s why I never redeem a flight with Qantas directly instead I accumulate AsiaMiles to redeem Qantas flight through Cathay and it’s much cheaper in terms of points and taxes.

If you must use Qantas points, I suggest that to re-route your itinerary to Hong Kong to save on tax.

        • +1

Is there a way to transfer Qantas points to Asiamiles? I have got like 100k Qantas points from some promotion and not sure what to do with them lol.

        • @MatthewSoul:

no, and there is no way to transfer AsiaMiles to Qantas. Use Qantas points to redeem a business trip, it's worth the points than an economy ticket.

        • @T-man: Thanks, guess im stuck with Qantas then lol. I got 400 travel credit as well but unfortunately I dont think I can use both at once

        • +1

I redeem QFF for Alaska Airlines flights, very little fees, taxes eg. Honolulu to Anchorage

        • @MatthewSoul:

Hey u wanna sell your qantas points and travel credits?

        • @Echa600:
Im not sure how you even sell such things lol.
Im still waiting for Samsung to credit another 50k QFF points but I have just used some for a ticket.
          Im all ears

        • @MatthewSoul:

There is a feature to transfer the points in qantas. I can pay u thru PayPal. What’s is your email address? Better to talk offline.

        • @Echa600:
Hmm I think I should be keeping them instead as I might actually get some tickets later on anyways.
          Thanks for the offer :3

I can't see any discounts for Osaka, has anyone got dates that worked?

  • Hong Kong Return For 28k points and $326. If you assume 1c/point value, you're doing just above $600 for a return flight.

    • +1

Yes, that's what I calculate the fare being too. Which makes it competitive on a dollar to dollar comparison with fares being advertised at the minute. But where this deal comes into its own is the reduced cancellation costs when using points. Only 6,000 points for redemptions (or $60) vs $400 when you buy red e deal with cash. If you want an ok fare with in built flexibility, I'd go for it.

    • It works well for booking flights during school holiday periods, but compared to normal sale fares you aren't saving too much.

  • When redeeming points for reward flights, airport and government taxes must be paid in addition to the points,” he said. “But Qantas Frequent Flyer also adds its own ‘carrier charges’ on top of this. Qantas carrier charges can add as much as $1080 to the cost of a round-trip Classic Flight Reward booking, and in some cases these charges are even higher than an equivalent airfare

    http://www.news.com.au/travel/travel-advice/flights/qantas-f…

  • I used this same deal last month. 100k points BNE-LAX. 100k points and $854.
This was rtn for 2 adults (booked back in September.

Just booked to shanghai 3 people ~$880 and got amex cashback spend 300 get 50 back. too.

Thank you for using Amex Offers with your Card ending in xxx at QANTAS AIRWAYS.

If your transaction meets the offer terms, your $50.00 credit should appear on your statement within 5 business days (however it can take up to 90 days from the offer end date).

    • How can you split paymment?

      • I didn't do split payment though.

        • so you are expected to get $50 only?

  • +2

With all the sales going on

You are better off buying economy tickets with cash

  • +3

Just booked Paris to Melbourne business class with Singapore Airlines with only AUD$175 extra in airline charges and taxes. Qantas FF award surcharges are ridiculous.

    • Singapore Airlines surcharge was also as ridiculous, they just dropped it since last year.

  • so best way to use QFF is to just buy normal economy ticket and upgrade to business? Is this still generally true?

    • It’s still true but remember that you have to pay for a higher price economy ticket which can be upgraded to business class, and it’s not guaranteed that you can upgrade your ticket unless you are Gold or Platinum Qantas member.

    • +2

Depends, that's if you want business. Also great for one way international, flights you may need to cancel (6000point loss but rest are refunded I think), and domestic "classic"
      reward.

  • Never mind, didn’t realise it’s economy only. Really should be in be title.
