How much of that fluff is actually relevant to the Australian market?

  • This has the same hardware as a Xiaomi Mi Box and sells for about the same in the US, meaning you're paying nearly $20 for the import.

Good product, but a limited ecosystem in AU currently and shit price.

Different OS tho. And can control via echo. One feature mi box is lacking

  • Does it need VPN or no need for us content like Netflix HBO etc?

  • +2

Don't bother, even with VPN nothing works correctly, and the interface is heavily focused on Amazon streaming, the voice search pretty much only finds Amazon or hulu (not Netflix).

I've used this and the roku equal and roku'interface and remote and prive all shit on this.

Its Est. AUD $110.09 from bhphotovideo including DHL priority shipping (you'll get it in about a week). A great shop in New York.

I've heard bad things about this Fire tv model, I'd go for the earlier (but still superior to the Australia version):
    https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1288281-REG/amazon_b0… thats $70 AUD.

However, I wouldn't buy any more of these Fire tv devices as they are all a bit under powered. They have a great price on the Nvidia shield with remote and games controller:

That's the best Android box you can get - $300 AUD.

You can get the Shield for cheaper than that, and for either price, I'd want something that isn't so outdated when it comes to HDR support.

      • I've got the first gen shield TV and it's great. Decent ram with a good processor that you can force into performance mode. Runs plenty of VPNs, chrome can be sideloaded, can run kodi, Netflix (in 4k) and plex easily. Pair it with one of the logitech wireless keyboards with touch pad and it's great.

        • I'm not doubting its raw power, what I'm saying is that the chip is so old it flat out doesn't support a bunch of HDR standards.

        • @jasswolf:
HDR standards are not limited by the CPU, but rather licensing or design choices by NVIDIA. Shield TV currently supports HDR10 (at least in some supported apps). This is the exact same chipset as the Nintendo switch, it's got plenty of power.

        • @sharky_k: no VP9 Profile 2 support, meaning no HDR from the other big content producer aside from Netflix and Amazon, YouTube.

It's a design issue, and they've said as much.

I've got the previous gen collecting dust in a drawer somewhere. Shithouse Kodi box. Get a Shield if you insist on dicking with Android.
