Garmin Fenix 5 Sapphire Multisport GPS Watch $749 (RRP $949) at JB Hi-Fi

150

I've been wanting to buy this watch for a few months now but couldn't justify the price. After visiting JB a few times, they were only offering it for the RRP of $949 with maybe $20 off. I walked in today intending on asking them to price match 99bikes.com for $799 but instead they offered me a listed advertised price on their system of $749. That, plus my $200 gift card from the Telstra deal a few months back meant i walked out with this for $549 out of pocket.

Edit: Possible price match - $665 from ja-gps,https://www.ja-gps.com.au/Garmin/fenix-5-sapphire-black/ Thanks sydracing!

Rumour is that a new model is coming out soon?

      Winter is coming too …

  • Good price for Sapphire edition. I bought mine (non-Sapphire) for $598 from JB last year

Great looking watch, not without few issues.

    • I went for silver bezel, the reason being black (and all coloured) bezels could get scuff pretty easily. It will end up looking pretty bad
    • Bluetooth issue could be really annoying sometimes. I have my watch and phone the same room just 10m away from each one and watch says that the Phone is not connected. I never had this issue with my Garmin FR235
    • For cycling, forget about getting performance stats if you don't have a power meter. This is ridiculous.
    • are you able to elaborate on the issue you are having with cycling and requiring power meter?

      • In this watch. There is a good feature called "Training Status" which indicates how do you perform and how you progress. This feature provides some very useful information for anyone who take your exercise/training seriously. Information such as VO2 Max, Recovery, Training Load, Lactate threshold etc. For running, the watch can provide you all these information. But for cycling, it is pretty much useless if you want to monitor your training.

For cycling, it can't simply work out your power output. Strava does a pretty good job in this department calculating your average estimated output with available information such as Speed, distance, heart rate and elevation.

In short, the watch will not show you any training information if you don't have a power meter on your bike. As far as I know, even some pro-cyclists don't use power meters.

        • That's very interesting, I always thought you only needed the "advanced" heart rate strap to get this information. Good to know. Although with the Fenix 5 at least you can pair bluetooth sensors so you can buy a power meter that isn't $1500+, there are a lot of aftermarket alternatives now!

  • How does this watch compare with the Casio Pro Tek WSD-F20?

    • Not a fan of Android wear OS. Also I would be bit hesitant to go with Casio for full-on-sport watch. Garmin is one of the (if not the best) leading brand for most sports tracking devices such as watches, cycle computers ..etc

  • Nice work. Best price I’ve seen yet.

  • Anyone wanting the non-sapphire version for $529

    https://www.ja-gps.com.au/Garmin/fenix-5-granite-blue/

JB and HN will price match Johnny Appleseed. HN price matched with the black strap for $529

  • I have the Fenix 5 sapphire, I wear it daily, I participate in triathlons (ironman 70.3 and ironman) I use the watch on an indoor cycle trainer, on runs hikes and swims etc etc… the watch is absolutely great.

    but….

If you're buying consider the forerunner 935 its nearly identical (but cheaper in a resin case) or the vivoactive 3 (its very very similar but has NFC for payments).

Oh and I've bought a bunch of the quick fit straps off aliexpress and the quality is pretty good, the milanese loop one I have is awesome.

  • Pro tip, check with your private health insurance, you might be able to get a rebate if you have extras cover for "appliances". Managed to get part of my Fenix 3 HR covered.
