By the way, Samsung 1 terabyte USB 3.0 drives are available for as low as $83 a pop, according to Static Ice

isn't wd better and more reliable than samsung HDDs?

Everyone has their own opinions, however i read a proper study that showed they were are pretty similar. Once youve isolated bad batches they all have a similar failure rate. imo its like fords and holdens.

Every company will have lemons (e.g Seagate and their line of 7200.11 drives) that will mar their reputation.

You can't really say that Company x is worse than Y just based on those screwups.

That said I think Samsung has been in the HDD manufacturing game for long enough to come up with reliable drives.
Their Samsung F3 series are great value for money and got good reviews for it's performance.

      • Thanks for the info guys. Last time I couldn't install Windows 7 on my Samsung HDD and the WD worked great. That samsung might be the one which had bad sectors but since u guys said they are pretty similar, i will make sure i keep this in mind :)

  • seagate are good drives never had an issue. got 1 500gb one and a 1TB one.

My past (20 years) experience with Seagate was not too good, all died with sound of clicking within 3-5 years.

      • Likewise my experience with Seagate. Had about 5 die within a year or 2. After 5 years or so decided to try again and yep. Brother has had similar failure rate over the past. Similar period (20 years) as poster above.
