Guys, this is an awesome looking kettle, but it has a defect / design flaw. To open it, you press a button, which causes "teeth" in the lid to recede such that the lid opens automatically (through the tension of a spring). Problem is, the teeth don't always recede, especially when the kettle is warm from before. Some expansion-related issue, I guess, which causes the lid to move forward. You end up having to pry open a hot kettle. I have owned one and returned it to Myer. Upon reading reviews, I realised that this was a common problem. It started pretty much from the beginning.
Seriously, don't buy it - you will regret it.
I dont have this issue, but good detail
I also have a different brand glass kettle and it is quite heavy. So I would also recommend buying a stainless steel one.
You mean when you open the top to fill it up with more water?
You don't have to open it to pour water out of the kettle, do you?
It should be fine if you fill it up from room temperature then… not ideal, but I'm still considering this.
Yes, you need to open it to put water in.
They were asking if the issue only happens when the kettle is at boiled temperature.
Wow, just noticed this kettle is plagued with bad reviews! I've got one in the Office and one at my parents', both are still going strong after 4 years.
It seems hit and miss, but many do have the issue.
We use our kettle a lot, so it is common that it is still warm, which why perhaps why we had this problem a lot. The mechanism works on the basis of a margin of error less than half a millimetre.
I've had mine for about 2 years and the soft open mechanism recently stopped working, gear tooth is probably worn out. So now it is a Fast open lid.
Other than that, still a good kettle.
I've had mine for 2 years so far and the lid mechanism is still in great condition, although I only use it about twice a week.
Mine is the opposite, lid pops upon sometimes when it's boiling. Had it for less than a year. I wouldn't buy it again.
Did you descale the kettle?
My one had the exact same problem and I contacted Breville and they advised me to put 1 part vinegar and 2 parts water and then boil it.
It cleaned up the corrosion on the bottom and have never had this issue ever since.
I had/have a similar issue with ours but found a slight tap on the lid near the handle makes it pop open if it ever sticks. Other than that I found it to be good so we kept it. It looks good, boils quickly, and is quiet as well. I clean it once every 6 months or so - outside using windex and the inside by chopping up some lemon and boiling that a couple of times - that removes the scale on the base (as that builds up it gets noisier) then a quick wipe with a cloth and it's as good as new.
These must look nasty after a while, can you remove the lid to clean it?
They do look nasty after a while, lid not removable so you need to clean it with like a cloth on a chopstick
Put in 1 teaspoons citric acid to about 1cm height water bring to boil will get it sparkling again.

nasty how?
Mineral build-up and mould.
Mineral build-up and mould.
Who has mould in their kettle?
Just with everything else that's made of glass, take care of it and clean it regularly?
what brand and model do you suggest? i'm in the market for a kettle.
was $22 here (may be still available) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/362892
Kmart version is $25
That's an entirely different kettle.
No amazon love for early adopters :(
