FAQ From previous post

Where do I enter the coupon code?

When you click "Proceed to Checkout" button, it'd say below the payment method "Have Coupon?"

It's showing me higher AUD price than mentioned in the title

Choose USD as your currency from top left hand corner. Don't select AUD, always choose to pay in USD, it will work out cheaper even after your credit card conversion fees. Also read the below.

How do I ensure I get the cheapest AUD price possible

To avoid higher currency conversion rates and to get cheapest price from these Chinese websites, you should get a credit card that charges zero currency conversion fees. 28Degrees, Bankwest Zero, Coles Mastercard are generally popular. Irrespective of what credit card you use, always choose to pay in USD on these Chinese websites, (Go back to main page, Choose "USD" from top left hand corner). Additionally set your Paypal so it "bills you in the currency on Seller's Invoice". To set your PayPal account this way permanently, follow the steps shown in these snapshots(paypal-community.com) [Highly recommended]

This is a great phone for the price - just had my delivered. Took 2.5 weeks to arrive. Battery last ages and no signs of lag. Only issue is no Band 28 (doesnt matter to me on Vodafone) and no NFC.

    • +1

I get about 8.5 hours of screen time usage with mine.

      • I updated mine to 8.0 Oreo as soon as I got it. My battery only lasts for 5 hours or so of screen on time. Are you on the same setup?

        • I'm on 8.0 with the March update. I haven't seen any impact on the battery usage. Always get around 8-9 hours. I updated to Oreo as soon as I got my phone around January.

Should I get this or the iPhone X?

    • +16

What you should get is one behind the ear ;)

  • Can anyone recommend a dual sim phone under $400 that has a great camera - including low light and fast moving kids? Does it exist?

    • +20

I've never known a phone to come with fast moving kids, but there is a poll in Mobile Forums which might help.

I believe the new Redmi Note 5 can be had for $230USD and is meant to have a pretty great camera for the price. More details about it here

    • Low light is where all of these cheaper phones really struggle. The new Redmi Note 5 looks like it has an awesome camera for the price, but if you check out the techtablets reviews of it, you'll see that it still struggles a bit in low light with the far older Samsung Galaxy 7 seemingly performing better in low light situations.

      • yeah, that seems to be the issue - i was half considering an older samsung model but getting a dual sim is the issue. Hopefully the next range of Xiaomi's over the next 6 months really improve the cameras - the camera would be close to the most important criteria for me

Still think the 64gb is better value @182… Mi A2 should be announced in 10 days so expect this to drop again soon

    • Is there any information about the Mi A2 specs ?

  • I wondered what happened to the Redmi 5X and found out that this is the 5X global edition, its just that Xiaomi have started a new naming system.

    • +1

this was done in partnership with Google, so it doesn't run the god awful MIUI and instead just stock android that's the difference

MIUI is awful and is filled with spyware, you cant remove it or it breaks complete functionality of the phones resulting in boot loops. I have a redmi note 2. never again will I buy a xiaomi phone for that reason.

try and forcefully remove a built in xiaomi pointless application to stop the spyware and have it just render the phone inoperable great one xiaomi

      • Got any examples? For research purposes of course.

I found miui pleasant after 2 years with regular updates. I'm not rich and have no valuable info, what do they spy me for?
Plus, NSA would spy you whatever phone you have, even Facebook or Google, you spy on you 24/7 but they don't have spy ware.
For those who is annoyed by privacy, better stay out of internet including bargain :-)

        • +1

I'm not rich and have no valuable info, what do they spy me for?

what would the chinese government or a large corporation want with your private data…. the same ones that have adware running in their stock apps you cant remove at all ever

you'll be glad to know that your battery sucks because its connecting to xiaomi servers 24 hrs a day non stop, try and uninstall Analytics.apk and see what happens. Xiaomi will foribly reinstall it without anything even appearing on your phone.

          https://thehackernews.com/2016/09/xiaomi-android-backdoor.ht…

try uninstalling any of the nonsense miui apps, you cant. If you root the phone and force them off, your phone gets stuck in and endless boot loop because its baked into MIUI firmware that you must have their analytics collecting data on you 24 hours a day. I've had redmi since launch… 4-5 years? its by far the worst piece of poop ever once you realise what the phone is doing.

MIUI write protect and lock you out of editing the host file, you can block the connection on your router or firewall but the phone will then be going crazy making thousands of connections a minute to random chinese servers until it successfully drops the analytics payload off for that 24hr period. there's no way to stop any of it.

you cant even uninstall the MIUI FM Radio app without it completely breaking the phone from turning back on

Would rather spend 10 more for 64gb.
$225 (after cashrewards) for 64gb with DHL from mi global store on aliexpress.
(I paid 208 during anniversary sale for same, 12 days from order to delivery but had Easter in the middle of that)

    • Can you provide the link please

      • +4

        https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Global-Version-Xiaomi-Mi-A1-…

Gold is $2 cheaper than Black ($183 USD ~$237 AUD, less 5% CR = ~A$225

For what it's worth, at bottom of page, go to Feedback, tick View Australia only, sort by Latest, I am in that list. Also note they are all 5* reviews.

        • Wow free shipping via DHL. 8-16 days. Way better than litb

        • Yeah I'd pay $10 more for DHL delivery even without the extra 32GB.

I feel very comfortable once a parcel hits their system

        • What's the difference between the two 64Gb A1 listings at the Aliexpress Mi Global store?

          https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Global-Version-Xiao…

          https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Global-Version-Xiao…

Is the Mi Global store an official store there as there is also
          Xiaomi Online?

        • +1

          @daydream:
I think the 2 phone listings are just the same phone, same store with the advertising targeted to different regions: Russia/EU

Happy to be corrected but I doubt either of those stores are truely affiliated with Xiaomi. I've bought several phones from Goldway and Eternal Team on AliExpress and I'm sure both of those 2 are fine also but I just stay away because I feel the store names are a bit scammy.

Looking now I see "Xiaomi Online Store" appears to have sold double the phones of the next store so they must be doing something right (or everyone just assumes they really are affiliated).

edit: double the number of Mi A1's at least

        • Yes, hard to tell who is legit in that marketplace.

  • +2

I made a new ebay account and they sent a 20% off code (max $50 off). Managed to pick up the A1 64gb for $211.99.

Edit: it runs great and the battery is decent for now. It was a tad disappointing to see a few xiaomi apps on there but I guess that was unavoidable.

  • I bought a Redmi Note 4 and I am unable download Netflix and SBS On demand Apps. I believe it is not designed for that. So buyers beware.

    • +4

Not really relevant to this deal. The Mi is part of the Android One program, so basically has stock Android, unlike the Note 4. So shouldn't have any app-compatibility issues.

    • Strange, i bought a global rom version (you can install it yourself) able to use SBS on demand

    • you bought a china version with original china rom. Even if you lately flash to official global version, you still cannot relock bootloader.
With unlocked bootloader, you cannot download certain apps such as Netflix.
Better off buying a original global version.
How do you tell it is original global version?
      1. the package is in english;
      2. the model number usually has "G" . For example: china version redmi5 plus model number is MEE7, while global version is MEG7.

    • Have you tried sideloading the app from APKmirror etc?

I have a rooted OnePlus One. Even though I can't install Netflix via Google Play, the sideload version works fine.

  • +7

its cheaper buying it from aliexpress.. this is $224 before cashback, aliexpress is $216 everyday

  • Great phone for the $.

  • Does anyone got freezing / hanging problem especially after the phone idle for a while?
Mine freeze up 9-15 times a day especially when I tried to wake the screen after it goes off for a while. SUper annoying.
Not sure if it's Xiaomi Mi A1 new update problem or faulty product. But I feel strongly that the product was botched as I did some google-fu and read all OZbargain Xiaomi Mi A1 related bargain but couldnt find the issue.

I bought this Xiaomi Mi A1 from ebay with 10% off code which turn out a bit more expensive but shipped within couple days.
I reckon ebay is more trustworthy & reliable than aliexpress / LITB / Joybuy. Turned out to be wrong

    • I think mine has only frozen once but it was due to an app. Otherwise it has been flawless. I'm on the Oreo March update.

      • Mine been bugging me up frequently ever since I bought it like couple weeks ago.
Do you install lots of app and have tons of app on background?
What's the app that make it frozen?

        • Youtube when I had Red that let it play in the background. I woke it from sleep and entire phone crashed and restarted. Seemed like an issue with the app not the phone though. I don't have many apps installed, around 30-40 or so. Did you try factory resetting your phone?

        • @Yuri Lowell:

Damn, that's one of the most frequently used apps I use daily. I rely on it heavily especially the background feature. So Youtube stock android problem ay

Yes , everything. Still the same thing. But less frequently.
So eventhough I got replacement , mint , still the same thing ay.

          Hmmmm…

    • I bought 64GB off LITB. Upgraded to Oreo with the March Upgrade straight away. And couple days after, all of a sudden, the phone became super slow - opening the dialer or messenger took 30+ secs. I tried factory reset, hard reset from recovery mode, even flash back to Nougat, none helped.

I ran AndroBench and it turned out that read/write speed is only 1/10 as specs.

Already posted back to LITB for a exchange.

      • So it's a faulty hardware instead of software?
Hmm… Strange , It seems to me that Im the only one who got it as well as I couldnt find any complain in OZBargain -Mi A1- Bargain post.

I feel that xiaomi tend to have higher faulty rate compared to other brand.

  • Got one from shopmonk….doesnot connect to cellular data
