How Much Do You Spend on Haircut and How Frequently

I had always lived in the CBD area be it Melbourne or Sydney and used to have the 10-15 dollar hair cut near Sydney town hall station or Melbourne central. The fact that the whole affair took around 10-15 min made the experience even better.

Moved to the suburbs recently and haven't yet been able to find a cheaper deal, spending 25 dollars on a hair cut every month. That has got me thinking about our community members. How much do you spend on a hair cut and how frequently?

I am a male who is not 100% on the hair cut prices for women so don't blame me if the figures are not accurate.

i used to fly to sydney for work once a month. i made a deal with a barber, that for a free haircut i would buy him a steak straight afterwards, and then i would charge that back to work.

    worked for 5 years straight

  • +1

    $22 every 5 weeks approx.
    Wife $85 every 5 weeks.

  • $35 every 4 weeks.

  • $35 every 6 weeks

  • My wife cuts mine at home. Free every fortnight

    • Yours is not free, you are paying in other ways!

  • $15 every 5 weeks in mount waverly. Used to pay $13 in Cranbourne though.

    • +1

      that's because it was Cranbourne.

  • +1

OP,you missed out bracket range $1-$9.

  • +2

$10 every fortnight, I visit the salon in Springvale where I live.

    • I pay 12 around there where do you go?

      • right opposite the springvale centro.

  • I do love the in-and-out quickies.

The ATO has been threatening a crackdown on cash-only hair and beauty salons for the past year so I wonder if the $12-a-haircut dream is over. The employers will probably find a workaround to persist slave labour wages though.

    • For card payment they only charge $1 or $2 additional, so still not too bad. Better than $25-$30 rip-off in the malls anyway.

Btw, it's not about low wages- you got it wrong. All those cheapie places are in high density crowded areas and they play volume game. 8-10 mins a cut with clippers can help them survive and still make decent money. I wouldn't be surprised if the workers there made more money than the ones in mall outlets who are often idle sheer due to the difference in volume of business.

      • +3

Sorry I don't think the point of my message was clear. Some articles over the last year say businesses that only take cash "look" more suspicious to the ATO and are therefore seen as more likely to be paying cash-in-hand to their employees.

I like to take a jab where I can since clueless OzBargainers typing away in their offices actually think 7-Eleven wage theft is an exception when in fact it's ridiculously common across certain industries (e.g. hospitality and hair and beauty). Scapegoating well-known businesses and pretending the problem is solved actually prolongs the problem. Complain to the Fair Work Ombudsman and it naively treats your case like it's an "isolated incident" and it basically serves as a Bureau of Statistics. Industry Awards are overly-complicated and business costs high but let's not pretend they're the primary reasons for underpayment.

  • I used to go to a place for $15, but I found another place for $25 which I don't mind as the barbers there are friendlier and have much better hygeine, they also do a harircut and shave with a cuthroat razor for $35, usually go every 5-6 weeks for a haircut, and get a beard trim and shave every second or third time, depending on how busy they are.

  • Been moving around lately. Used to get my hair cut at Korean salons in the CBD but now I'm in the burbs it's less practical. Anywhere from $20-$30. Reading all the comments about clippers is making me seriously consider investing in some.

  • +1

I am a 34 year old woman, and have been to a hairdresser twice. Yes, you read that correctly. Once at age 3, and once at age 14. I have a cowslick, and two out of two hairdressers have arsed up my cuts because of it.

I cut my own hair. Easy peasy

  • +6

This may seem silly but can some dudes who clip their own or get their wifes/gf to do it, post some pics?
Blur out your face or whatever, I just want to see hair.
    I'm considering going this route.

    • how will this impact your decision without knowing the skill set of the person cutting the hair?

      • +1

Well, if 10 out of 10 haircuts are horrible, he will probably decide to keep going to the barbershop.

  • +1

I happily pay $20 every 5-6 weeks, which is probably not frequent enough for a haircut, but don't mind my hair growing a bit.
The $20 includes 3 washes and head massages to go along with that, totalling 5-8 minutes of service before cutting my hair which I don't mind, but when my hairdresser cuts my hair, she is so darn SLOW!

    FIRST WORLD PROBLEM ALERT!

What's everyone average seating time when getting their hair cut?

I don't have long hair, but she spends almost an hour. I know…I'm getting more "value" for money, but I don't have time to be sitting in the chair while she does what I think are redundant things.

And to answer the question of why don't I just go to another hairdresser - because I am satisfied with the end result.

    • Maybe she likes you, if you know what I mean.

      • That's definitely a possibility, but I'm sure she would rather make more money cutting more people's hair than spend an exorbitant amount of time on a "crush"

        • You are thinking too economically and too logically. I know of an opposite case. A guy used to see my friend who was his hairdresser even when he didn't need a "haircut". Now they are married. Money was not object, time and money well spent.

    • What's everyone average seating time when getting their hair cut?

About 6-7 minutes for me. But I prefer it that way - shave/cut and run. I go straight home and shower. Might be in my head (no pun intended), but I start feeling itchy from the bits of hair if I don't shower straight after.

      • About 6-7 minutes for me

Wow that's awesome! No time wastage.

I start feeling itchy from the bits of hair

        Morgellons disease?

        • +1

Wow that's awesome! No time wastage.

These guys are no nonsense! I think the employees make money based on the number of heads they go through. They add to a tally in a book at the counter after each haircut.

          Morgellons disease?

First time I've heard of disease, but no! My "haircut" is mostly shaving so it's short bits and pieces of hair on my clothes and neck. Pretty confident it's actually itchy haha.

    • +1

Well over an hour. There's so much stuffing around with the random chatting, finding the person who washes my hair, waiting for the person who cuts it. The endless attempts at upselling. But they do a really good job so I can't leave.

    • +1

Usually 5 minutes. They don't muck around. Suits me, I've got better things to do than chat to a hairdresser.

  • I pay $25 or $30 atm. Every about 6-8 weeks.
I have stuck with same hairdresser for many years now, have followed him to 3 different hairdressers (now barbers) . When he stops working somewhere, I asked where he is working now. He gave me his mobile number, for when he was in between jobs, but still was cutting a few clients hair.
I found many years ago, that there can be a huge difference between a great haircut, a good haircut, an average haircut, and a baf haircut.
Its quite noticeable in the reaction of others the day hair is cut/styled, and it is worthwhile to me, to pay whatever my hairdressers place of work is charging, its worth it because I know he always does an excellent cut and style (and does eyebrows) and even has offered free hair wash (which I accepted 1 time, but didnt like, I'll wash my own hair at home) .
With Doctors, Physio, Chiro, masseuse, Dentists, Hairdressers, I tend to find a good 1 I am happy with, then stick with them for the long term. I accept the price going up or down $10 based on where my hairdresser is working at the time.

    • I pay $25 or $30 atm.

      Which ATM cuts hair?

      • Which bank ? Well The commonwealth bank ATM of course .

    • +1

Good on you. I personally doesn't give a toss what others think of my hair. I'd rather shave my head than paying 30 bucks on a regular basis to do up my hair.

      • And would you be happy with a partner who does the same . Shaves head, grows hairy legs to save on razors .

        • Mate, my wife tells me that I'm a girl when I climb on the scale once a day. She values her husband reserve his time and energy doing taking care of something else other than his appearance. Call it gender-bias or whatever but that's how we operate.

    • I found many years ago, that there can be a huge difference between a great haircut, a good haircut, an average haircut, and a baf haircut.

I disagree, i went to boarding school where haircuts were forced and there was some shockers (myself a few times) and after 1 week it isnt not too bad anymore, after 2 weeks its not noticeable. So id say 2 weeks between a terrible haircut and a good one.

  • $20 - $25 every 1 - 2 months.

  • $20, I get a hair cut every two weeks, alternating between my hair dresser and cutting it myself.

  • +3

$65 haircut for me every 4-5 weeks, but the hairdresser literally spends 60-75 minutes perfecting every detail of my hair then his young apprentice massages my head while I fantasise. Worth it, always walk out feeling a million !

    • +7

Wow $800 per year on haircuts

      • Yeah brah, ballin 😎

    • +2

      Username doe… Never mind.

  • Male, about $45 every 2 months in Melbourne CBD. I like having a good haircut :)

    • +5

      I get a good haircut for $20.

Just because your hairdresser pays 10 times the rent in the city, doesn't mean you get a better haircut.

    • +1

Been to $50, highly regarded, barber shops (Brother Wolf in Prahran and a couple in Brisbane) did not spend much longer on my hair and I didn't see that much of an improvement.

Might have been that I got the less experienced barber. IMO barbershops should operate like they do in the US, you pay a premium for the senior barbers and a discounted price if you get a cut from a trainee. Been to too many places lately and clearly gotten the trainee but still paid full price.

  • I do it myself with a pair of scissors that was given to me. Not only do I save $$$, it only takes 5 minutes and I don't have to wait in a queue or listen to the hairdresser talking crap as she cuts my hair.
Also I do a better job.

  • $10, every 6 weeks or so.

I wanted to try a $6 hairdresser (Hurstville NSW), but my wife gave me that “I wouldn’t do that if I were you” looks.

  • I used to spend $10 every couple months, back when I was a baller. Couple years back I bought the wife some scissors and clippers. Now every haircut averages down the price of those items. I think we're getting towards $1.

  • $40 for haircut, wash, hot towel, neck shave, and product every 6 weeks. Been going to the same guy for the last 7 years.
Note: His prices have gone up in that time.

  • Number 2 the back and sides every month. Also bare clippers the back of neck.

Then every 3 months I get a full cut back to quite short all over @ $30 locally.

Self cutting it pretty easy once you get the hang of it .. takes me 15 minutes now.

A tip is do 80% of what you intended to cut at no 2 then no 3 the last 20% to blend it in with the rest of your longer hair.

  • $0 dollars for the last 30 years not including the $30 Breville clippers I got 15 years ago (still working) and the $15 dollar Wahl ones I got 3 months ago from a deal here so really less than $50 for the last 15 years or $3.30 a year.

  • +3

    Where's the "1-9 $" option?

Always get a no hassle $7 haircut at Hurstville.

  • $0. I cut my own hair.

  • male with short hair
    $20 every 7 weeks

  • +1

Shave my head with a razor twice a week, dollar shave club razors so about $1.30 per haircut

  • I tend to go to whatever place is open when I need a hair cut.
    So $25-35 is the bracket.
$35 was the last one at a new place in Balmain, I just happened to be walking by and they were between appointments.

  • Too much (cut and blowdry, no dye). Every 3 months because it would too expensive to do it every 6 weeks like the hairdresser recommends. Have just bought hairdresser scissors and plan on watching a bunch of Youtube videos for a DIY job but too chicken so far.

  • -2

$20 every fortnight by a female near my house. No hand job or massage included

  • Male

For the past 5 years: $25 every 4 weeks.

As of a month ago: $0. I was balding pretty bad so shaved the remnants off. Now a quick buzz every week that I do myself.

  • Zero once a month. Unless you count the cost of the electric shaver, but I use that for my face too.

  • About $150 every 1.5 - 2 years. Averages out ok in the end!

  • +4

I'm sad because I realise I haven't paid for a hair cut for over 20 years.
Once it started thinning on top the missus took to it with clippers every month and that was that..
Even sadder now because these days it only needs doing every 2 months or even less…
The hair cut I mean, not the missus….
    :(

    • made me chuckle >_<

    • It's not sad, its one less thing to think about and it's genetically progressive. Bald people are more evolved apes.

  • $50 (free coffee included), every 1.5 months

  • $0 - I have cut my own hair for 5 years. It's damn easy with clippers.

  • Use to be $65-80

But found another place and getting it for $40-$50

    ….

Use to be once a year… now once every 9months

    yeah I hate haircuts…

    head massages are awesome

    • Use to be once a year
 now once every 9months

So how do you style your hair? I imagine you'd look different throughout the year?

      • +1

style… lol… wet it and few seconds to brush it down in the morning… done

        • Wait - I assumed that you were male without asking! Are you male or female?

I imagined that 9 months of growth would give a dude a completely different look. Mine starts looking like Krusty the Clown's after two weeks!

Whereas for females who generally keep longer hair (for example, shoulders or just past), the growth in 9 months isn't that much, relatively.

        • +1

          @bobbified:

          male,

hair grows pretty slow… you don't notice

I don't shave my head, I get it cut to just a couple of cm's on the neck

According to the U.S Center for Disease Control (CDC), scalp hair grows at an average rate of 0.50 inches (1.25 cm) per month, or one-eight of an inch every week. This means the average person grows 6 inches of hair per year.

          So no big deal

  • +1

Poll is missing $0-$10. My guy charges me $8.

  • Heaps of videos on Youtube will teach you how to cut hear, or even cut your own hair.

  • I hate how most of the cheaper women's haircuts are terrible and you end up having to pay again elsewhere to get it fixed :/

    • +1

Doesn't that apply to most cheap services?

  • +1

    Local Tafe, Free!

  • every time i came home from the barber I'd always end up fixing their work so decided might as well do the whole thing myself. learnt off youtube. just need two mirrors and a set of clippers. doing for a few years now. really happy with the result. Not to toot my own horn but I actually get compliments and people asking where I get it cut for and how much it costs me. lol

    disclaimer: requires high dexterity.

  • I live in rural NSW. It costs me $35 and a minimum of two weeks wait

  • +1

10 bucks at TAFE and different chick every time mostly very happy with it just takes a bit longer and during holidays it costs me 25.

  • Damn, wish Brisbane CBD had a haircut for $10.

  • Spend about $45 every 3 weeks. This includes a beard trim and a haircut (a fade with a comb over).

Wife loves the "always-clean" yet styled look and I quite enjoy getting a good haircut. $45 is a pittance, and doing it myself is definitely not worth the money saved.

  • I gotta pretty good head of hair. Get it cut maybe twice a year plus "as needed". IE, if I need to look like I get a hair cut more than twice a year

  • +1

Used to be $10. Once every fortnight. They upped their price to $15 about a year ago. The last 4 months I've been going weekly. It's so soothing that I fall asleep :)

Edit: tis two mins from my place. So I get there when they open at 8. So usually first.

    • Which place is this? Sounds amazing!

  • +1

$10/month, buzz cut, any of the random string of mainly Vietnamese places in Tivoli Arcade, Melbourne CBD. I'd do it at home, but it's impossible to keep the hair adequately contained and it pisses off my wife - easier to just get it chopped.
