Interviewing people for your next podcast?

Recording uni lectures or a concert?

Got a Gf or Gran' who's been harrassed at the door or by phone, who wants to collect evidence of any future abuse (I know it's unlawful, but it's better/safer than "packing-a-pistol" right? ;-)?

Just want to add some spot-by-spot comments to your travel-photos?

I'd say this puppy will do any/all of the above… with its dual, crossed mic's (pretty cool & hopefully effective for stereo recording).

An easy-to-find "Rec" button. (Another great Japanese design!)

2 GB of space to record into - MP3 or "Broadcast WAV" (the latter lets you add search-marks to stop at, later).

Instead of lotsa squinting at a screen to see what multi-function button you need to press next… the H1 has a zillion external buttons (even one to Lock the rest ;-)

OK, maybe only half a zillion… :-)

OfficeWorks had a much simpler (and - I think Mono - DVR) for $118, recently…

I say: Wny not add $16 & go stereo with this puppy…?

The only reviewer comment (by a guy in USA who sells 'em, no less) that made me think twice before deciding was: Its case seemed a bit less than solid.

Oh, it has a threaded-mount for your SLR camera (I think it goes where the flash would attach).

Now, all I need is the Accessory Kit… :-)

Would-be- or student-Journo's here's your entry-level DVR…

(If you know the H1 or Zoom gear, generally, perhaps you can comment on what I might expect, by way of performance, from this product… Tnx)

I just wanted to give credit to the Canberra store that seemed to have the best price (See link)… everyone else had a higher price AND added a shipping fee. (BTW, RRP: $199, per their web site.)

I didn't see any end of sale date… probably an end-of-year deal. A quick look shows the same price (still shipping free).

(If you see such a date, I can add it. :-)

PS Compared to CentreCom.com's "Closed for the holiday" policy, DW Music apparently stays open to send out product…

They sent me an eMail (between Xmas & New Year's Eve) to say my H1 has been shipped… Great service from an Aussie shop!

Keep it up, guys! :-)

Meanwhile, I'll just have to wait a little longer for CentreCom's package… :-(

  • Do people actually use this to record lectures at uni?

I've been thinking of something to help me take notes at uni. Juggling between a professional audio recorder and a Livescribe pen.

    • I think the Philips might be a "flatter" (ie, less thick) solution to carry & might not be as easy to see, sitting on the book arm of a lecture-hall chair… but - why not?

(International/ESL students sometimes find it useful to record lectures, given in English, at least in early years at Uni.)

    • Many universities these days record lectures, both the audio and video, then make them available online. Those that don't yet probably will soon.
Most mp3 players and mobile phones have competent voice recording functions. Or, you can quite easily find an old fashioned tape dictaphone. They tend to be fairly good quality.
Of course, if you've got money to spare then something like ZOOM H1 would be great, but to most people I doubt it would be worth it.

    • This is an amazing quality recorder. I've used one at work and they do a great job with recording live music. Not sure if you need this type of quality for lectures, however.

You can save a few dollars on eBay buying from overseas US, if you are an eBay fan.
    Comes to around $108 Australian.

    • Plus with our current exchange rate, even better. Thanks!

    • Yep. I saw another (no longer there) that even included the accessory pack… postage went up a bit, but a reasonable price; perhaps it was their end-of-year Sale bundle…

      I will buy on-shore, this time. :-)

(Hey, we gotta buy a few items in AU or we'll be left with no shops here to supply us with toyds. ;-)

  • I don't have the H1 - yet - but I do have the H2 and the H4 (I'm a journalist/musician), and they're both awesome. About to buy the H1 for the form-factor.

I don't plan on buying it but that thing is the coolest looking audio recorder I have ever seen.
