  • What's the return policy with Amazon? I've read you can only get free return shipping if it's mentioned in the listing.

I can't see any mention of free return shipping in the Pikachu Edition listing so I'm assuming if I buy this as a gift for someone and they don't like/need it then I'll need to pay for return shipping even though it's fulfilled by Amazon themselves? (Thanks to anyone who can clarify - I haven't bought from Amazon AU yet!)

    • +11

Isn't there a whole thing about stores not accepting returns due to change of mind?

Not sure why you'd just buy something for someone without asking them and then assume you can just return it at Amazon's expense to boot because you hadn't asked the question?

      • -2

Where did he assume he could return it at Amazon's expense?

I don't think I've ever asked anyone directly about a gift. Otherwise I wouldn't bother wrapping it because they'd know what it was…

        • Giving a person something they actually want while saving the trees and cutting down waste? No way!

        • +4

Said it pretty much in the first sentence, read again.

        • @Moofy:

"What's the return policy with Amazon? I've read you can only get free return shipping if it's mentioned in the listing."

First sentence reads like a question to me. Second sentence says what they've heard about free return shipping. Neither of those are an assumption.

Anyway, don't mind me, I've got a headache so I'm cranky about everything.

        • -1

          @chocsyrup:
He asked about change of mind at the Amazon expense for change of mind. It's written all over his post starting with what you posted.

Amazon returns policy is like 99-100% other online retailers. Returns for change of mind is at buyers expense. Takes a 2 min google search to find this out.

I don't think it needs to be stated per online sale item (maybe it does with Amazon).

      • -2

Show me a place that will return things at their expense for change of mind.

        • +1

Bonds, TheIconic and Styletread are a few that I can think of off-hand.

        • @chocsyrup:
And they pay for shipping? I find that hard to believe, but I have never heard of those worst from bonds? Don't people buy that at big w?

Okay so bonds do at least, in sure their prices are probably higher than big w?
Maybe a good thing if you live remote though I guess.

    • +2

Here is their return policy https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=….

Looks like change of mind is fine if product is sealed.

In the UK if Amazon are offering free return shipping on the particular item they always advertise it on the item page. So I would assume that you would have to pay return shipping costs.

Looks like they have a return shipping system however https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/orc/returns/homepage.html/ref=o… which simplifies that process and likely offers good value.

      • Excellent, thanks! The listing needs to explicitly mention free return shipping otherwise it’s on me to take care of.

        • Hey looks at the message below looks like they are ripping people off. Wouldn't have expected that from Amazon but I think restocking fees are illegal in the UK anyway so I wouldn't have much experience.

        • Just reject the delivery. Return to sender. It’s free.

        • @no not me:
That's only if you change your mind between ordering and delivery though. Often packages are left at the door, how can you reject that? What if they differ to die and your answer, you can tell them you don't want to receive it?

Have your ordered online before to not think of this?

        • @Moofy: ordered something last week. They left it at my door ($500 order). Told Amazon I didn’t want the order and that leaving it at the door is unnacceptable. They sent me a $15 voucher. If they dump things at your door, simply go to the post office and say you want to return to sender/the order is cancelled. That’s what I did.

        • @no not me:
So post office don't make you pay to send it back?

        • @Moofy: Nah, they didn't.

      • +1

Keep in mind this thread, which suggests their returns policy is not quite clear cut:

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/357942

        • Oh wow - thanks for the info. I've been living under a rock so I had no idea.

I didn't see any mention of restocking fees when I was going through the return policy pages. Sure, perhaps 10% to 20% may be "reasonable" but 50%?

(I can also see it from Amazon's perspective - they aren't obligated to accept change of mind returns so they can set the rules in those instances. It would just be nice if it were more visible in their return policy pages…)

        • +1

          @denpol85:

In Germany I used to buy two or three shoes sizes from amazon.de, and just return the pairs that didn’t fit free of charge!

        • @denpol85:

          more visible

And I think that was the major issue. For all intensive purposes, the refund policy suggested there shouldn't be an issue. It suggests that 3rd party sellers may charge a restocking fee, but from my recollection, there was no official policy accessible that suggested Amazon dispatched products will incur a restocking fee.

        • +1

          @Procyon:
Good idea but that is abusing the system and a reason why they do it very rarely.

Shoes aren't ideal to buy only unless you are sure of the size/fit.

        • @Moofy: With Amazon Prime, they actively encouraged you to use your free returns. (They still made more money off you through your combined purchase than if you went to a shoe shop.) In other words, they specifically designed the system like that!

Good price. Alternative for New 2DS: $159.20 (+$4.95 delivery) including 2 games (LEGO Ninjago and Code Name: S.T.E.A.M.) with EB Games ebay deal…
Depends If you value those games as worth the extra ~$15.
    Link: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Nintendo-New-2DS-XL-Console-Blac…
(works out about $25 more than Amazon for similar deal with 3DS)

    • Code name steam is $5 currently on clearance at Gamesmen

  • +1

just waiting for broden to get all the pikachu edition and flip it in ebay…

  • +12

The 2DS XL is the one to get. You just end up turning the 3D off on the more expensive one.

    • agreed, majority of the time I turn off the 3D, it makes my eyes feel uncomfortable after some time watching in 3D mode.

    • +5

I love the 3d, as silly as it can be.

Also, good time to jump in as there are some pretty big sales on the Nintendo shop right now. Steamworld Dig 2 is awesome BTW.

    • +6

Man I actually enjoy the 3D. For one it seems to act as a passive anti aliasing solution.

      • +3

They do look a lot cleaner with 3D on.

    • +1

I actually thought the same, and was all set to buy a 2DS XL. But I ended up with a secondhand 3DS XL, and I actually don't mind the 3D, depending on the game.

Definitely the Old 3DS XL had issues, but on the New 3DS XL the 3D is much better.

But yeah, if you have no interest in the 3D and are just going to turn it off, the 2DS XL is the way to go, because it's cheaper and very slightly smaller too!

      • +2

Agreed. Love turning on 3D for periods of time. Sometimes looks brilliant.

      • And a fair bit lighter I think.

    • not to mention i've spent 90% of my time on 3DS playing DS titles or Pokemon games, which don't support 3D. half of the other 10% i turn off 3D anyway.

    • +2

I play all my games in 3D if they have the option. It's especially good for Fire Emblem as it adds a depth to the battle maps and the battles look awesome.

    • +1

Isn’t the 3ds a better build quality overall though? Like speakers, materials etc.

      • Dunno about that. I'd be interested to find out. Is there a teardown you know about?

        • Nope just going on system reviews, depends what $30 is worth to ya. 2ds xl was made to be lighter so speakers are repositioned and are muffled, stylus shortened, and weaker screen - but that maybe to some of manufacturing issues discussed below re screens featuring on some 3ds and not others.

    • I dunno, for $30 extra to have the option of using 3D if you want it, I think that's the better deal. The 3D can be pretty cool in some games.

  • +3

SNES version 3DS not discounted :(

  • thats awesome, i was just about to get one from big w but this is a great price

  • Ah man, before I got my Switch I was waiting for the 2DS XL to drop in price so I could get my Pokemon fix, especially with Detective Pikachu coming out. But realistically it'll prob just sit there collecting dust.

To impulse buy or not… sigh.

    • +1

FWIW, I bought my New 3DS XL after I got my Switch. And I've probably sunk about equal time into both!

Love the Switch, it's awesome for sure. But I feel the 3DS is a good complement for it, with its vast back catalogue of games, and even greater portability (I take my 3DS when I can't or wouldn't want to take my Switch with me, and don't have to worry about babying it like I do my Switch!).

      • Sigh, let's face it, I'll prob bite cave and get it. But the bigger question would be, Pikachu or Pokeball version?! At the moment I'm leaning more towards Pokeball, Pikachu seems just a tad too bright for me.

        • +1

Heh, well I went with the SNES version of the 3DS XL, for nostalgia, so I can't help you there! :)

FWIW, the Pikachu edition was originally exclusive to Japan when the Pokeball and Pikachu editions were released. Worldwide release for the Pikachu edition came a few months later. I'm not sure what that means exactly - perhaps the Pikachu might be rarer because of the staggered release? I don't really know.

But yeah, Pokeball is probably the more muted option! :)

        • Imo they are both really ugly. Nintendo have so much to work with but they always produce such ugly merch. The worst thing is there is so much great fan art out there featuring their characters

    • Should I get the 2DS for my Pokemon fix or is it better to get the Switch long term?

I am not that familiar with Nintendo gaming devices :S

      • If you want to focus on Pokemon games, the 2DS for sure. There aren't any Pokemon games on the Switch besides Pokken Tournament, and even then, that's not exactly a traditional Pokemon game. From the announcements so far, it doesn't look like Nintendo have any plans of releasing any Pokemon games on the Switch in the near future (12 months).

That being said, the only thing that I'd get the 2DS for would be Pokemon games, there's not much that's been released on it that has excited me much. Whereas I've been loving the different games available on the Switch and being able to play them while I commute to work.

        • There are rumors to suggest the next generation of Pokemon games will be released at the end of 2018 and they will indeed be pokemon switch games (this has been confirmed at E3 last year.)

        • Thanks, certainly gives me something to think about lol

        • Pokemon on Switch will release in 2018 - bookmark it!

      • Different devices, at different stages of their life cycle - just depends what you're looking for.

-2DS/3DS is much cheaper, much more portable, and has a vast existing catalogue (have a look through, and see if there are games you want to play). Can also be hacked with CFW for emulators, etc. Still a few new games being released, but it's pretty much at the end of it's life cycle, so don't expect many more new games.
-Switch is a portable/console hybrid, much more powerful, better graphics, much better for multiplayer, newer games, etc. The next mainline Pokemon game will be for Switch, but might not be out for a while.

If I had to choose one, personally I'd go with the Switch, because I love it for the multiplayer and newer games. But if you want to play through the back catalogue of Pokemon games, a good option may be to pick up a 2DS now, and then get a Switch later once the new Pokemon for Switch comes out?

Both are great systems, just depends what you want!

      • 2DS XL, and you can get every pokemon game to date :)

      • All old games are on DS. New games from now on will be on the Switch. Ultra Sun and Moon were the last.

    • Shouldn't the switch have just replaced the DS? It's virtually the next step up isn't it? Nintendo all portable now with option to chromecast to tv basically. They should just make all ds game compatible on the switch.

      • Its a transition period. For example they have state there will be no more pokemon games no the DS. The team who made those titles are now working on the next pokemon RPG which will only be on the switch. Essentially DS will slowly get an end of life.

        • See I would half consider getting a switch if a decent Pokemon game hops on it, even if I'm in my 30s when this happens.

        • @DonaldDr4per: It will. Its due late this year or early next year.

      • The Switch doesn't have two screens so it isn't possible to make 3DS and Wii U games backwards compatible on it.

  • I don't need a pokemon themed DS, I don't need a pokemon themed DS…. I don't need a pikachu themed ds… I don't….

  • +3

pika pika (wish there was a pooh bear version, oh bother)

  • Thanks OP! Got the Pikachu edition with Detective Pikachu game for under $200 shipped. So hard choosing between Pokemon Editions

  • Good price. Bought the pikachu edition at $200 a few months ago

  • I just can't believe how expensive the games are for a handheld console

    • Yeah that is what holds me back. If you're not so worried about the console itself, the eBay EB games sale has a 2ds with mario kart 7, with the discount it comes to $126.

      • Well I just bit the bullet and bought the 2DS XL - got a trip overseas coming up and this will help on the plane :P

        • Yeah, and the 2DS XL looks so much better, did you get the Pikachu edition? I'm very tempted.

        • Haha I just saw down the page that there is a $10 off so I bit the bullet and bought the Pikachu edition… what have I done?! :D

        • +1

@em: Couldnt use the $10 coupon as not a new customer :( And I got the boring black edition….I feared the judgement of walking around with a giant Pikachu head haha

    • +3

Why? Most of the games are high quality. 3DS isn't like mobile gaming where you'd be hard pressed to find a quality content complete game.

    • Go second hand.

    • +2
  • Anyone know how long this is going to run, I probably won't be able to buy it until next week, and do you think this is worth it if I already have a switch.

    • Basically it's only worth it if you really want any of the exclusives. Keep in mind that the graphics are absolute 240p blurry shit and a lot of the games are made for children and/or turn based JRPGs.

      • +2

        Love the honesty

      • lollll! … pickachu has never looked better mate!

      • +9

There are some great titles on DS to enjoy - so many titles that there's certainly something for everyone - not withstanding the well known titles and ports:

        Donkey Kong Country
Zelda: A Link to the Past
        Zelda Ocarina of Time
Majora’s Mask (another great Zelda title)
        Super Mario World 3D
        Professor Layton titles
        Xenoblade Chronicles 3D
        All the Pokemon titles
Lego titles (some better ports than others)
        Shovel Knight
        Boulder Dash – classic
        Luigi’s Mansion 2

        • +2

          Ace Attorneyyyy

        • I like professor layton and ace attorney but I feel the newer versions have way too much 'talking' that i just taptaptap through…

    • See my comments above. Just depends on whether there are games on 3DS that you want to play.

Personally, I love my New 3DS XL (which I bought after my Switch!).

    • +2

      Vs Switch…

      Cons:
      - Lower graphical fidelity

      Pros:
      - More portable than a switch. Fits in pocket.
      - Far larger games library than the switch (14 years worth of game cartridges are playable).
      - Games more affordable.
      - People won't be interested in robbing you for it.

If you are on the fence, make it a low cost risk. Buy a screen protector, keep the console in a felt/material pouch when out and about. When you open the console for the first time, take it out of the box carefully, keep every single item (including plastic bags) from inside the box. Keep that box in great condition somewhere safe. If you like it, great! If you don't like it, advertise it on Gumtree as "Complete In Box Pikachu 2DS Console - Used Less than 5 hours - near mint condition" for $130 and it will go. I think it's worth the risk for $20.

      • How many people are rolling people for their Switch consoles anyways?

        • +5

At least three people worldwide… But are you willing to risk being the fourth?

        • +2

          @Cubist:
          Most definitely not.

        • @Cubist: I wanna be part of history!

  • Already own a normal 2ds xl but tempted to buy Pikachu one just for the collection.

    • Ryan Reynolds… 'but why'

    • +1

Thank you! Hopefully it gets added to the description

    • I get an error when trying to use the code. Only for new accounts?

      • Yes, new accounts

      • Just create a new account.

    • Thank you so much :) I was always tempted to get the Pokeball edition at $220 but I held back. For $139 (free delivery) this was an awesome deal!

  • How do these go with their "Digital" titles - seems way better to have a digital copy than the physical cartridge because you can take all your games with you. Anyone want to share their experience between digital and physical

    • Digital items are tied to the console not your account. Physical is king on Nintendo systems
