LG V30+128GB Phone - $899 from JB Hi-Fi

160

So the classic LG price free fall has started…..RRP of $1199, currently on sale at $899.

I recommend getting this on some kind of price protection credit card, as it is probably going to continue to fall.

Great phone, a lot of bang for your buck.

I got one last week, loving it.

    LG. Life Boot Loops.

    • +12

I think that's outdated thinking now no?

      • +2

        They're still messing up.
        https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2018/1/15/16889854/p…

        Boot loop affected devices: G4, G5, V10, V20, 5X, and possibly Fiesta 2.
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG_smartphone_bootloop_issues#…

So no. I got burnt. Funnily enough not by boot loops but by WIFI and Bluetooth dying on 2 different phones. (Not fixed by factory reset). Had a hell of a time waiting for a repair on the secnd, and then JB Hi Fi messed up when they relented and let me have a 3rd phone. JB cancelled my contract with Telstra without my permission. Only way they could sort it out was to put me on a better contract. I'm on my 3rd for the last year or so and now the power and volume button cluster is playing up.

LG seems to have QC issues and people let them get away with it.

        • What phone was it ?

        • @OzSikh:

          G4.

        • +5

@syousef: G4 was plagued with hardware issues, LG has fixed most of them in their newer handsets. They still have some QC issues, but there aren't any more bootloops on the V20/G6 onwards caused by bad soldering anymore.

Most if not all V20 bootloops were related to software or use of incompatible USB C cables, none reported yet for the same hardware issues the G4 had. So I'd say LG has improved on the mess that the G4/G5/V10/5X were. That being said, they still seem to have QC issues with WiFi, Bluetooth, screens, etc, but all large companies do… Samsung, Apple, HTC…

        • @chihaeru:

LG has more than their fair share. And I'd say unless your charger is frying your handset, using a USB C cable should cause poor charging not a bootloop. Unacceptable. Especially if you're asking people to trust you with $900 for your handsets, never mind RRP.

        • @syousef:

I guess I got lucky with my G4 - other than the bootloop that I had repaired under warranty, I haven't experienced any of the other issues.

Having said that, seeing all the Pixel 2 deals recently (and this deal for the V30+), I wish my G4 would somehow crap itself and give me an excuse to buy a new phone!

        • +1

          @brotherrfranciz:

Always worth having a spare phone in my opinion. That said you can pick up a crappy one for $20 but I was without my G4 for 5 weeks and let me tell you the choice between a $50 special and my old Samsung Galaxy S4 was painful and both sucked to use as a daily driver in 2017.

That said I hate the newer phones. Innovation seems to mean taking features like headphones and removable batteries away (effectively limiting the life of the phone. My Galaxy S4 is still going today! If I had the heart to format it, I'd probably have something usable). The "notch" is the stupidest piece of ugly and lazy design I've ever seen fly on a modern product, and manufacturers are now copying it. I don't think I'll be buying a flagship phone for over $1000 any time soon.

        • No reports on the g6 and thats been out for over a year now… Id be willing to give them another go possibly. I was lucky (touch wood) with a non boot looping g4 thats still going strongish….

But the G6 is still better value atm imo

    • +2

Though JB would be local stock, local warranty vs grey import and more limited warranty for the above I'd imagine?

    • +5

Yep, but for those wanting local warranty I think this is the cheapest.
I'm in the local warranty camp….has to be pretty cheap for me to ignore an extra year warranty.

      • -5

Both businesses listed are Australian and would have to give full warranty by law.

        • +4

I think you'll find the grey importers only offer 12 months in house warranty, and from what I've heard the process is far from streamlined.

        • No, these are sold by Kogan Hong Kong Ltd and come with a 1 year warranty only.

        • +1

Grey imports have 1 year warranty through the seller (Kogan, DWI etc), which by most accounts isn’t the best process to go through. Local stock has 2 year warranty through the retailer (JB in this case) and LG Australia.

        • +1

Yeah…. Been burn by dwi before over a known software issue that causes bricking on the original note. They'll fight you to death just to avoid a warranty claim. Saying you dropped the phone or misused it. Took about 10weeks for me to receive my phone back after trying to claim warranty as it had to go back to China for inspection. Plus I had to pay shipping back since it wasn't a warranty claim.

With an LG phone with known issues…you better have local warranty.

        • @krisspy:

tl;dr You'd think so but my LG Australia G4 warranty experience sucked.

Took it back to JBHiFi who had it sent via LG Warranty process to possibly the cheapest repair shop with the worst online reputation in Sydney who kept telling me it would be worked on the following week. Finally one time while checking up after 5 weeks the lady I spoke to at the repairer thought I JB HiFi staff and told me the part required (motherboard) was out of stock with no ETA. Used that info (no ETA) to demand JB replace the phone, which they did. But not without cancelling my Telstra contract. That forced them to put me on a new one that was better since I hadn't agreed. The first time I had a G4 die it had taken a few days to get it replaced with a brand new one under JB HiFi's "no lemon guarantee". This time it was over 5 weeks and probably cost me about 4 trips to the store and a dozen hours.

        • @syousef:

That's a better resolution than if you had a grey import.

        • @FeedingTheSnail:

I don't know. 12 or so hours of my time, petrol etc. If I could get paid work/overtime for 12 hours I'd have been to just buy a new phone. Time isn't worth nothing.

  • +3

This phone is so close to the perfect phone for me, I just can’t believe LG opted to use the IMX 351 for the main camera sensor, especially after after all the hype around the optics. That alone has made me hold out on picking one up. Still, good price for local stock.

    • +1

I just got one, the camera is good, certainly not at the level of the pixel, iPhone or galaxy line thoug…. Although the wide angle lens is the greatest!

Otherwise the phone is amazing, great battery life, the quad dac is sensational, the display is fantastic, sd card, 128gb on board storage, I'm loving it.

      • The quad dac is quite impressive as it can drive my 600omh headphone with ease. I can't see myself using other brands but a V series LG phone.

        • I would get this phone just for the DAC :)
But waiting for a further price drop

        • @congngo: Totally agree, a dac that has smart phone feature. Can't get those features which any other expensive audio equipments :)

        • I'm in this same camp. Absolutely love my V10 (which is still running flawlessly despite all the doomsayers) and the audio elevates this phone above all the competition for me, given every phone now functions way faster than I'll ever need (not a gamer).

V30 is my next for sure.

  • +3

Waiting for it to drop to the sub $420 mark (grey import) just like my V20. LG is very underrated with the features that it has (especially the quad dac) and i'm cool with that. Don't want to be seen with the same plain vanilla iphone or samsung phones.

    • In a few months.

      • LOL can't wait for it. Hopefully not toosoon as my V20 is not even 1 yr old and at that price, i will be tempted to upgrade :)

      • It will be more than a few months…. g6 still isnt there after more than a year….

  • +1

    Great last-gen flagship.

  • +2

While these are great units spec-wise, like syousef says, LG stands for life boot loops. I had been so enamoured by V10, I got a second one after the first one failed. Predictably, that too failed. However, the ebay seller OZ Digital online was able to fix it for me since it had local warranty. Can't say if it would hold up, since I no longer use it as a daily driver.
The first one was an HK import, and therefore, no warranties.

  • +3

    Things to note
    1. It has been as low as $886.39 for Australian stock previously, refer => https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/365721
    2. A newer, higher spec model was announced recently (search for LG V30S ThinQ). Not available yet, but expect prices of the older model to drop when it is.

    • Also makes me think about the LG G7 which is due to turn up this month. That has a fancy new screen which is supposed to make the phone cheaper. Otherwise it's very similar, except with the newer 845 processor.

Might be worth the (small) wait to see what eventuates. JB Hifi usually keeps the price high until they absolutely need to cut it, which suggests there is a reason for this price.

  • I had been hanging out to get one of these for ages but the price dropped too slowly so I went with an S9+. I was waiting for sub $800 before pulling the trigger (barely any AU stock on Ebay so coupons weren't getting it below that price).

  • +1

Never buy LG after G4. Will not put myself through the pain again

    • +2

I think you got a lemon with the G4. I'm coming from nexus 4, nexus 5, G4 and V20 and fortunately never had any issues with it. Everyone deserves a second chance right :)

      • +1

The phone was one thing, darn slow & I don't ask for much. I'm still using samsung s6 edge. When you drop that phone you had to go straight to repair shop as it completely stopped working. Also the case they gave you was worthless.

      • Upvote for the Nex 5, great handset.
Lemons aside, LG does make great phones. David Warner swears by them…

      • +1

        I had 3 separate LG G4's fail

  • My next phone for sure. Waiting for the inevitable lower price, however.

  • +4

A few comments in this thread mention a 2 year warranty. This doesn't seem correct as LG Australia website indicates 12 months only for this model.

    • really?!?

    • +1

I'm not too sure if it still applies, but I registered my V30+ through the LG website in January and after registration, it showed that I have 24 months warranty for parts and labour.

It's not actually advertised anywhere (that I could see anyway) for Australia. I also bought mine locally from JB.

      • look under the details tab, it states:

        Manufacturer's Warranty - 1 Year

        • It does say 1 year on the website and on JB, that's why I mentioned that the 2 year warranty is not advertised anywhere. If the product is registered on the LG website, the warranty will get extended to 2 years in the same way that the US one does.

    • +2

If it's sold in Australia then the ACCC say you should expect 2 years - as apple found out when they didn't provide 24 months.

  • Actually…. It says only 1 year on the jbhifi website as well…. How frustrating!

    • -2

Maybe be better to save some money and get it through Kogan with their 12 month warranty.

      • +1

It's showing 24 months in my product registration.

        • look under the details tab, it states:

          Manufacturer's Warranty - 1 Year

        • +2

@xev: maybe it's 1 year, and 2 years if you register… Like what they offered in USA?

        • Where are you seeing this? I've just registered my phone on the lg website and I can't find anything that mentions the warranty period.

        • @thisispants: I can't find it any more… but chatting online with LG, they said "It has 24mos manufacturing warranty for parts and labour."

        • @molybtek:

That's really weird, I also chatted to them and they said only 12 months.

        • @thisispants: very weird indeed… did you tell them you're in Australia?

        • @molybtek:

I didn't… I might try again and see what they say.

    • +1

Are you sure, this seems to indicate two years for products 500-1000 https://www.jbhifi.com.au/Documents/Consumer%20Warranties%20…

      • Is a phone classified as a Electrical Product?

  • @thisispants

I recommend getting this on some kind of price protection credit card, as it is probably going to continue to fall.

Price protection will almost certainly be based from PRINTED CATALOGUE evidence only.
I tried for a $300 refund earlier in year but despite price drop being shown online and on TV advert, the only proof to be accepted MUST be from printed catalogue, which was not available. Screenshots are totally rejected.
Clearly a clause in their favour that is becoming outdated in today's increasing digital based medium.

    • Really?? That sucks

    • I've had no problem getting a price protection refund from a Kogan purchase, obviously no printed catalogue, they just looked up the product on Kogans website. This is with Coles MasterCard, nothing in the T and C about catalogue items only.

    • Just use ebay au and import it if that's your intent, price is very competitive and updated often along with the 5%-20% coupon etc.

My 28 degrees card has accepted every claim from eBay thus far even for stores like dwi ebay.

      • My 28 degrees card has accepted every claim from eBay thus far even for stores like dwi ebay

Its 6 month protection is certainly a winner but apparently only covers price difference from same retailer?

My card is with ANZ but underwriten by QBE who stipulte printed catalogue only. I checked with another, Allianz I thnk, can't remember and they were same 'small print' conditions of catalogue only.
        $#%&ing small print limitations :P

        • Ya same name store only from ebay but they'll update their prices over time just to compete with other international stores, jb just does whatever they like since nobody bothers to stock it in AU and can ignore their international competition too.

Latitude seemed good unless they've changed their policy in the past year, have cut myself off from overspending lately because of their generous price protection/no international fee… They have a yearly limit and Coles has it with a 12 months price protection but unsure if it's any different.

Apparently the screen on this thing is really average.
