  • How does this compare to the prime S?

    • Good morning, The P950HP is a slimmer design and has 1 x 2.5" HDD slot and 1 x M.2 slot. Instead of two of each on the P650HP/HP-G.
      It also doesn't have a G-Sync screen.
      Cheers

Upgraded to a 120hz panel makes sense.

  • +1

Interestingly you can remove the SSD to save $180 and BYO

    • +4

That's a decent price for a 512gb SSD tho. It's also pre installed.

      • +2

Tis, but good to know it's an option to knock off $180 if you've harvesting one from an older laptop. Some people may not notice.

      • +1

Sure, but some people might have one spare or want a faster NVME drive.

        • +1

Yeah fair enough! I would personally remove it and add one myself, was just stating that's it's decently priced.

        • +1

Yes you can remove the drive and install your own:) It won't void the warranty if you install your own RAM, HDD, SSD or Wi-Fi card.

  • Is 8gb RAM enough for 1080p high settings gaming?

    • +1

      More than enough.

      • Ok cheers thanks. I don't think the 1060 can handle 2k gaming at 60 fps please correct me if I am wrong but if I stsrted

        • Depending on the game but I highly doubt 1440p @ ULTRA… If you tried mix settings and used a few mods to get higher FPS then yes probably.

    • I'm on my 3rd gaming laptop, RAM is yet to be an issue.
GPU then CPU, SSD is mandatory for OS and some games.

  • Whats everyones thoughts on how good a price tag this laptop is? Has there been similar laptops with similar specs? Im in need of a new one. This one seems good but not great for price/quality? Also how do meta box go for laptops? Ive had too many issues with my horize whitebox build due to hardware to software compatibility.

      • like $300 more then I wanted…. I was hoping closer to $1k then $2k ~_~ I'll give it a nice look, hope I dont get reeled in, haha.
        THanks mate!

        • I am waiting for JW Computers to have this model and beat the price by $300.

      • Yes we have this one too.

I have this, with different specs (1070 for example) and am really happy with it. 6 months old now, and haven't had an issue. Only downside I would say is no BIOS upgrades for Spectre/Meltdown fix, but apart from that very happy. Build quality is excellent.

  • Out of interest, what is driving the cost of the "3D Carbon Fibre Wrap"? At $259 for top lid or $339 for palmrest (or $499 for both), this seems like an awful lot for vinyl stickers on a laptop? (or maybe I'm missing something here… at least compared to what I historically buy from DBrand).

    • +2

Pretty sure I could I buy this stuff myself and do it for less then $15-30 unless it's supa special material .
EDIT ** I just checked it up then. https://detail.tmall.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.14.6.4fb0a40b2…
Less than $5… haha. Yes its not in Australia, so this one is on ebay https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/OZ-3D-Film-Carbon-Fiber-Vinyl-Wr… for $15

Hate when peeps put a huge mark up price tag on things that costs next to nothing. I doubt I am wrong however I haven't done much research.

    • We make $20 on this carbon wrapping. It is sent off to a 3rd party to get done. Over time their costs have risen considerably. It used to be soooo much cheaper.

      • +1

Are you able to elaborate on what is special about the vinyl wrap which the 3rd party does? I previously had my car entirely vinyl wrapped (and all my laptops/tablets too) and was wondering is the vinyl/process used by your 3rd party superior?

        • +1

From my understanding it is a raised type of wrapping. So if you ran your fingers over it the surface is bumpy.
Of course the ports on the side need to be custom cut out, so this is where the time and ultimately higher cost goes.
To be honest, I think your idea sounds great. I hadn't thought of that.
          Cheers

  • Can I advise against a Metabox.

Have had two, and the loud fan noise issue will beat you out in the end.

They are brilliant in terms of what you can pack into them, turning them into computing weapons for gaming and high-end visual production, but the fan noise is excessive!!!

You might be able to overlook it in the short-term, but in the long run…

My experience only. Have also seen threads saying the same thing, as I thought it was just my luck.

    • U have cleaned them right? excessive noise can be contributed by excess dust build up….

    • Hi Ricdan1985,
I see that you are new to OzBargain, welcome.

With your issues, did you buy from us?
Have you spoken to Metabox about this as well. We can get this sorted for you.
Do you have an invoice number?

  • is this laptop 'up-gradable' in the future i.e. is the GPU/CPU soldered to the mother board or removable at some point? just helps make a decision on how many 'upgrades ' from base you select…i.e. 120hz screen or save the $$ for next laptop..

    • Hello, The CPU/GPU is soldered onto the motherboard. So not upgradeable unfortunately.
