Not that I'd be able to put any noticeable dent in their profits, but I personally try to avoid them these days due to unethical business practices.

          He could try again tomorrow?

  • It seems rarely a day goes by that there isn't a sale for a portable hard drive.

Quick question: For desktop users, do most people keep theirs permanently connected (perhaps via a USB at the rear of the box)? Or is that not advisable?

    • +5

I personally wouldn’t do that, I only just have it connected when I need to access or transfer files (movies or what so) into the portable HDD

      • +1

Unplugging them reguarly isn't ideal either. Though I'd do the same personally.

Drive will go to sleep after a period of inactivity.

I have several USB hard drives connected to my server PC (some desktop, some slim and bus powered like this one), and they’re only running when I’m accessing something from them.

  • Manufacturer warranty 2 years. Does this mean their possibility of failure would be higher than those with 3 or 5 years warranty? How do we back this possibility with some facts/statistics?

    • very difficult question. broadly wd better than Seagate but elements at weaker end of wd lineup.

2 years confirms that. Some people avoid elements - useage depends on value of data etc. If invaluable use something else.

    • +1

One downside of WD is they use proprietary connectors inside their drives. So if a drive goes bad, you can’t even take it apart and hook it up to a SATA interface and try to recover anything.
