1978 35 yr old scotch
Never heard of it
No. Idea about quality. But in terms of bargain. It is one

Selling at dans for $4070

https://m.danmurphys.com.au/mob/product/DM_828336/port-ellen…

https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/p/4265/port-ellen-1978-20-…

I'd buy a buy a case of it but the decimal place would have to move at least one spot left

I'm still poor from the last Nick's deal
Anyone who buys one, please send me a shot

  • Port Ellen is super rare, much sought after by rich whisky heads …

  • Rare because the distillery no longer produces.
The stock is now owned by Diageo.

This is a bargain, in the sense that the RRP is valid (saw GBP2,400 online), so 25% off.
    But I can't afford it.

    • Long term I know, but apparently the distillery is being rebuilt and will begin production in 2020.

    • Cant help but feel that RRP is such a pack of wank. (Not just in this case, but in general…)

  • +76

Thanks OP, bought 2 and going to mix it with a nice bottle of coke :)

    • +20

Extra points if it is actually slightly flat Pepsi Max as the mixer.

    • +1

Hopefully with a lemon slice on the lip of the glass

    • +1

R u gonna use vitamix to mix??

          he's American English. Whiskey

        • +4

@Winston100s: nothing to do with where the consumer is from, but rather where the whisky/whiskey is produced

      • +6

True whiskey afficionados use ALDI Cola LA Ice Cola.

        There. Fixed it for you.

        • +1

Yessssss - finally, a fellow LA Ice aficionado!!! I usually mix my JW Blue with a generous amount of LA Ice Cola.

        • If your mixing Canada Dry is the go!

You're going to run out of negative votes

        • +1

it's ok i can offset with positives :D

    • +1

Did the same but went Pepsi, it's about $1 cheaper at woolies.

      • Shame on you, may as well have gone for the 79 cent home brand

  • Due to its apparent rarity and no long being produced

I'd buy a few if I had confidence it was going to appreciate in value

    • +5

"I'd buy a few if I had confidence it was going to appreciate in value"

Same, but I don't have confidence it will.

    • +8

Will it be a better investment than bitcoin?

      • +5

Bitcoin peak US$19500 mid December 2017, now US$7800. Crystal ball says… maybe.

        • +25

If you drink it the value will plummet. That I can guarantee

        • +11

@hellohello123: That's the best thing about wine and liquor investments: to appreciate it you must destroy it.

Years ago when Dan Murphy's had a free Grange tasting session I was standing in line behind a middle aged couple. They told me they have some Grange in storage but have never actually tried any, so they had to wander down to a discount liquor store to finally try what they spent thousands of dollars buying. Brilliant.

        • @Cluster:

          my solution: buy 2 !!!!

        • @hellohello123:

better solution will be to buy them all, drink all of them except 1. That last bottle price will multiply by many folds, and you got to drink/enjoy the rest.

p/s: Just checked. There are 6 bottles left from the website. You get to drink 5 bottles of them.

        • @hellohello123: prove it

    • +4

it almost certainly will. Its a legendary malt and the distillery isn't just mothballed but totally bulldozed.. so not only is it not produced currently, but it can never be produced again.

  • +74

    thanks op bought 0

    • +5

      Same here….

I thought if I looked at my screen hard enough.. The decimal. Point might move left

    • +1

      Username does not check out

      • +1

Dad and Son use the same account, he is the poor son I guess

    • Baller I can't even afford to buy 0.

  • +4

If I put this in my coffee will it make me feel better about being at work today?

    • +2

      Today? Yes.

When your credit card statement comes through? No.

Edit: Thinking you'd better buy 2, one to enjoy now, one when the credit card due.

  • +1

I don't dare to tap on the link!!!!

  • +4

Thanks OP, bought a dozen to take to a bbq on the weekend.

    • +3

Nice mate, I'll bring the mixers, all good!

    • You're gonna need a bigger bbq for all your new mates!

  • +9

    Only $35,988.00 a dozen!
But when I try adding to basket it says only 6 available.
    Damn!

    • I didn’t even dare to add to basket

    • Sorry, just bought 2 dozen

  • +2

( waiting for joke about Officeworks pricematch)

    • +1

Are they not price matching? Typical.

I wonder what their excuse is? Apart from not sticking it.

      • +4

They closed all stores when they found out about this deal.

    • Dan's should drop the price to $2998.95 soon so might be best to wait.

      • Dan's have dropped it to $2998

        • +3

yeah they did too, must be someone asking to price match,
5% off with gift cards , and cash rewards

its getting tempting, but the reopening makes me think values wont go up

    • +2

      Knock knock
      Whos there
      Officeworks
      Officeworks who
      Officeworks price match

    • Sorry Officeworks is on another holiday. They will be back shortly.

  • +1

    No cashrewards?

  • +4

Roughly how many Eneloops we talking here?

    • +1

I'd rather have that many Eneloops.

  • +1

Is this better than Johnnie Walker red label?

    • +6

It gets you drunk as effectively as Red Label, but costs 100x more, so no, it's not better.

  • +10

My investments in $80k luxury new cars haven't yielded a profit yet, so I'm too poor to buy this whiskey.

    • Too poor for investment whisky? Surely not.

  • +3

My bank account doesn't even reach that high

  • +3

This is a very nice scotch but to be honest I much preferred the 1976 release.

    • +2

      Show off 😆

  • +7

I only drink whiskey which are older than myself, 12.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Bought 0 because I’m poor af

  • +4

price match at Dan Murphy's to get it for $2998!

    • That's a good point…. 5% off with gift cards too

That's a big price drop. Wonder if dans would actually price match or give some excuse.

      • *$2998.50 only price beat by 50c if its over $10 difference

  • +1

Does this go alright with orange juice?

  • +15

This stuff is really worth the money. You guys are drinking rubbish because you're too dumb to make the big bucks.

I just had to borrow a few bucks here and there from my lackeys at work but I'll pay them back when I get back from my holidays. First class because I deserve it.

    Baller.

    • I'm dumb and don't earn the big bucks but will splurge every now again on similar things

    • If the underlings mention the money you owe them, just give them harder and harder work until they quit. Then borrow more from their replacements.

      • I just give them a hard time over the PA. I don't think any of them are OzBargainers so I am safe.

    • Yay, such intuition.

      • +2

You never give out the reference. We leave the uninitiated bewildered at our response.

  • +6

Did anyone have look at the tasting notes?

The nose offers coal tar, damp fabric Elastoplast, citrus fruit, sultanas and warm leather.

    I'll pass

    • +1

Mmmmm mmmmmm. I'm chewing Elastoplast right now….

    • damp bandaids taste good too!

      • +2

The best ones are from the bottom of the swimming pool.

        • +2

It's a rarity but if you find the ones with the scab still attached, it adds a whole new depth of flavour.

    • +1

      Ugh, YUCK! I hate sultanas…

  • +1

Not sure if the reviews are taking the piss or not. Apparently you can taste damp fabric Elastoplast, furniture polish and lanolin. Not things which would tempt my tastebuds.

    • +1

First time I tried Talisker I thought it had an overpowering smell of iodine. Not exactly pleasant, but a characteristic of this whisky. Many quality whiskies smell like someone tipped an ash tray into them.

  • +1

    Can I pay via bitcoin?

  • +1

    Thanks OP. Bought 10.

  • +1

I think they're producing Port Ellen again. The price might drop in the very distant future.

  • +1

if i bought that right now my life would probably never recover lol

    • I don't think it'll keep you smashed that long man.
