  • works OK with just 1GB of RAM?

    • +2

yeah, no problem. if you're only doing a single thing then it's fine. if you expect to have a few dozen browser windows open, streaming a movie, playing music as well, then it won't be too happy.

      • does this come rooted?

      What's not to believe?

      1GB RAM + 8GB ROM
Larger storage space for you, and offering you a fast and highly responsive user experience.

The only thing i miss on these kodi boxes is that there's no built-in chromecast. Only MiBox has it afaik.

    • +2

some has miracast option, which is not really bad.

      • not supported on googlehome but if you using other products ptobably not a big issue

      • +1

Very slight problem with that, hal, as won't be available on this box or any other device with a recent Android build. Google dropped native support for Miracast after Lollipop in blatant ploy to sell more Chromecast units. Various apps are out there, relying on earlier DLNA protocols to connect, but they are clunkier.

Also, Open the Bloody Pod Bay Doors, HAL!
        Thanks

        :-)

Supports 4k but only supports 10/100 weird its not gigabit but none the less fantastic price op !!

    • and no 4k netflix

    • dont need 1gb to stream 4k

  • Can I watch Netflix at 720p on this?

    • -1

      No. 480p

      • +1

Not sure why you got a neg for that. Perhaps it was more of a "boo".
It was my understanding that 480p was the limit on the no-name boxes, except for the MiBox and one of the Mecool versions. I think the MeCool's are only about $55, so maybe it's worth it for the 720p Netflix.

        • +1

Could have been more of a "I don't believe you". People don't like to hear that they've actually been watching 480p, thinking it was 720.

And XiaoMi is hardly a no-name, especially here :-)

Just wondering if they have any good bargains in higher configurations, like 3GB + 32GB or 4GB + 64GB or may be a windows box with acceptable configuration.

  • +1

Bought one. Exchange rate made it cost $31.11 with the free shipping option. Let's see how this turns out!

  • Spend a bit more for a 2GB version.

  • +1

Seems the R2 is the same price: https://www.zapals.com/a95x-r2-amlogic-s905w-2-4ghz-tv-box-a…

Any reason why you'd want the R1 instead?

The R2 is also available in a 2G/16G version for $31.99 USD.

Edit: Just watching a review of it, seems Kodi 16.1 is preinstalled but blocked from the main menu and can't be updated? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHxZ7QhZ-RE

  • +1

usually with these cheap android media players I just install Libreelec and run Kodi direct

EDIT: also for those technically not in the know - the S905W chipset can only support 4K video output at 30 fps, not 60 fps like the S905X chipset.

  • Product is probably fine - this neg is because Zapals isn't exactly trustworthy based on my past dealings with them.

    • hows that?

      • +1

I ordered from them before - they didn't ship a high value item (phone, $640), I filed a paypal claim, paypal sided with them because they provided paypal with a tracking number, but when I called AusPost asking about the tracking number (it shows no info on the auspost site), they confirmed the tracking number wasn't even for my address. This is an ongoing dispute, I'm going to reopen the paypal case, file a chargeback with my bank, maybe even legal action.

  • anyone know if there is logitech harmony profile that will work with this? no hits on their database but know some boxes work with other profiles
