    Why buying a Refurbished SSD?

    • Because it's a lot cheaper

    • It might be good for a cache drive in a nas.

  • How do they refurbish a SSD?

    • +1

formating them and wiping them clean with some pino-clean.

    • +3

Format it, wipe dust off and repackage in box?

I'm not sure I've ever buy a refurbished (or second hand) storage device (SSD or HDD) - seems like the wrong place to be trying to save a buck.

    • They kiss the boo-boo and give it a juice box.

I'm assuming the NAND chips are either removed from the failed board and added to a new board or the controller chip is replaced.

SSDs can get stuck in certain modes (BSY for example) which make them appear as failed but with the right tools can be brought back to life. So maybe they're just 'reviving' these kind of drives?

Either way - definitely a good price for 500GB sammy. Not that i'd go refurb unless it was in a mirror, cache or scratch storage.

Never had much luck with factory refurbished hard disks. Maybe SSDs are better but who knows?

Personally I'd go new for such a critical part of a PC but happy to be proven wrong if others have had better luck with SSDs.

FYI - Current MSY price is $203

A refurb with 30 days warranty vs buying new and having 3-5 years…

    • +1

No confidence in their own refurbishment.

Tbh spending the extra $10 for a new one following these steps would be much better

    • Well that was shameless

      • Lmao. It's only like $10-20 using that method (which I didn't create)

        • Its also half the capacity

        • @Lief1250: I said using the method, not with that specific SSD… You can do it with any SSD and of course the 500GB samsung 850 Evo is an option

      $199 for SSD + $17.95 for eBay voucher = $216.95 - $50 = $166.95

What am i missing apart from the hassle of the $10 referral credit

      Still isn't an extra $10

      • I get your point sorry mate, shouldn't have said $10… But still if you went to extra effort for the $10 credit it's only $18 more for a brand new drive… $10 was a massive stretch sorry mate.
Edit: if you want I can ask mods to remove my comment if you would like?

        • I don’t think we need to do anything as drastic as deleting your comment, but if you could refund me the $8?
If the drive breaks down after the 30 days but within the “3-5 years” you can have it.

        • Don't think removing your comment is necessary. You have a valid point and I assume most people here would prefer new over refurbished.

        • All good mate - TBH I like your process, just wanted to point out the price difference… And yes, i'd be going New vs Refurb but as some have stated above these could be useful for some :)

    • hey lockster - how does one use your process to get 2 drives? is it possible or do we have to go through it twice (ie two transactions)?

      • Easier to do it twice mate

        • thanks man. looks like they have no stock anyway :(

Never buy a refurbished SSD unless they let you how many times that SSD have been used!

    • +1

Just dont in general. If its ex display maybe, if used, just no.
