  • Is it locked with optus?

    • Doesn't sound like it.

      http://www.optus.com.au/shop/support/answer/how-to-unlock-yo…

Postpaid Mobile Broadband Modem / Tablet
Optus does not usually lock devices originally purchased on or for a Postpaid contract, unless it's one of the devices listed below:

      Galaxy Tab 7"
      Optus MyTab
If your device is not listed, then an Optus unlock request is not required, as your device is not locked to the Optus network.

I don't think it was ever locked in the first place

      • …and if it is locked, according to the fine print unlocking is free if you've owned it for more than 12 months or have put an additional $100 on it since buying it. Just FYI.

I have a Telstra 4g wifi thing, and am tempted to get this as it's about the same price as unlocking the Telstra thing. (oh, and it costs $30 for 3Gb for 30 days on Telstra….)

    Also offer available in store

  • mine wasn’t, though telstra usb dongles i have are locked for 2 years unless you want to pay to unlock ….
cheaper to own a telstra and an optus modem than to,pay for unlock to telstra.

  • how much is a prepaid booster, say, like 20 GB?

  • Can I use this for my Optus wireless ipad deal?

  • I have just got it. Just trying to activate it, but it's asking for which Prepaid plan that i want to be (and i need put my credit card).

Am i able to get the 4gb "Includes 4GB of data for use in Australia within 28 days" without registering on any plan? or I have to register on a plan? So get the cheapest plan is $10 for 1gb (+ 4gb)?

    • There is no plan, its prepaid.

      • yea prepaid plan. I cant get the 4gb (that comes from the box) unless I activate it by selecting a prepaid plan (cheapest is $10).

OK - bought one from the local woolies. Registration tries to use the credit card for verification (which failed so had to use my drivers license). I just picked the 30 day prepaid and when I got to the end there was a small note saying that it came with some credit pre-loaded so no cost. I also unchecked the "auto recharge" option. I've tried to check how much data I have to use, but it fails when going onto optus.com.au/prepaidbalance but maybe it takes some time for it to work. I've also added it into my existing optus account, which worked, but it's not there yet and apparently can 'take up to 48 hours' to appear…..

        Update

Installed the Huawei HiLink app on the mobile, connected to the ap, then from the ap sent a message with "bal" on it to 9999 (yes - can send/receive SMS messages….. 9999 is free to send to from an Optus service though - assume this sim does not have much or any credit to send messages to anything else). Response back was I have 3.98GB available, expiration 7/4.

So just to confirm, the "plan" they are talking about registering for is the default month by month plan to be used when you next recharge. It would only automatically be used if you don't uncheck that automatic recharge box. You can change this at a later date if you want, of course.

The AP is actually not too bad - has a "wifi extender" option where, if it detects a known wifi network, it will use that rather than 4g. So I've loaded in the home network. Might be able to use it in some hotels that offer free wifi, although would probably fail where you need to click on a button to agree to Ts&Cs and/or otherwise register first.

…and as a bonus, the short micro USB cable it comes with seems to support fast charging.

  • Anybody know if you can just put a regular phone SIM in one of these to use the data?

      Yes

FWIW I am currently in Singapore. Got myself a Singtel tourist card (https://www.singtel.com/personal/i/phones-plans/mobile/prepa…) - 100GB data for $15. Actually got the $30 one as it also provides 2GB data in Australia. Only lasts for 10 days, but whatever.

Anyhow, back to the point. Put the Singtel card into the AP, and it worked straight away. No need to manually change APN etc. Just worked.

I got this from woolies on last week deals (08 Apr 2018)
I inserted my TPG phone sim card and worked right away.
No need to change AP. Both my iPads can connect and my wife iphone6 also can connect to this optus 4G wifi mobile with my TPG phone simcard inside it.
FYI , I did not activate the optus data simcard 4GB that come with the bundle wifi modem.
