Optus Huawei E5573 4G Wi-Fi Modem $34.5 @ Officeworks

170

Not sure it is a real bargain, but it is good price in my mind.
While I am looking for a 4G wifi device, I found this deal.
Optus Huawei E5573 4G Wi-Fi Modem $34.5 @Office
http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/optus-huawe…
Described as "Comes with 4 GB of included data with 14 days expiry for use within Australia."
It is only half price than Optus store and even cheaper than the ones I found on Ebay.

It is also selling on Optus for $69.
http://www.optus.com.au/shop/prepaid/mobile-broadband/wifi/e…
Described as "DOUBLE START-UP DATA*: Total 8GB (4GB + Bonus 4GB) of included data^ with 14 days expiry for use within Australia"

Personally, I don't care the include data, $34 for the Huawei Device is pretty good price.

I got one from local Officeworks yesterday. Btw I think the device is unlocked. I have inserted a Telechoice(Telstra network) SIM card in it, and it works well with Telstra 3G signal.

The 14 day expiry is beyond pathetic especially with the double data.

    • apparently that's the new dirty trick from Optus.

Add credit before the 14 days is up to have your data rolled over

          hmmmm you smart beautiful bastards…

          They have a $50 7Gb 1yr plan which is cheap as but add that to 8Gb = $84.50 for 15Gb for 1yr???

@tonyjzx: This deal is still active, $60 for 21gb. You are gunna need to get your own modem though.

        • @tonyjzx: Nice work, but I wonder if you do get to keep the 4 or 8GB (If it is double up data) after you add this 1yr 7GB plan. I will try giving Optus a call and see if I can verify this on Tuesday. If so, I think this is a great deal for a backup broadband source when traveling or at work (Away from my ADSL connection). Thanks to OP and wakie + tonyjzx :-)

        • @woodvaliens:

yeah i tried that… i chatted with them and got passed to 3 different reps and they couldnt tell me

          someone in their store would

        • @woodvaliens: based on Optus' description, it should work.

  • anyone know whether you can STREAM video/media files from the microsd card in these (as opposed to downloading the files)? ie. use it as a portable media server. (i find it hard to find the answer to this specific question)

    • Usually yes. Generally just a http server.

  • Some people use a spare phone as their 4G wifi modem. You can pick one up for around this price. Might help if you are going to stream from an onboard sd card.

  • Can anyone else confirm if this device is actually unlocked? I want to use my Vodafone card on this device

    • I tested it with a Telechoice and an Optus SIM, both working. But no Vodafone in hand, so can not help here.

      • According to the optus page it doesnt have the main Telechoice (telstra) 3g network, 850Mhz so it will only work on Telstra 2100Mhz which is quite slow for most people

        3G Network 900/2100MHz
        4G Network FDD 1800/2600/700/2100MHz, TDD 2300MHz

    • Yes it is. I purchased this at Coles this week and purchased the Telstra one last week.
Just put the Telstra SIM card in it and it works.
I was planning to buy a Vodafone one as well but I won't need to now.
