      • +4

        we measure willys.

        • +1

My cousin's is 6 inches whilst mine is 12.

Oh sorry, I was referring to favourite submarine sandwich size.

  • +4

    What does it matter?

    • -5

don't u feel a bit different not having a fancy car and fancy house compared to your close ones?

      • +16

        No, this is Ozbargain.

      • +8

Different, yes, in any way less because of it? definitely not. Some peoples priorities are all about gaining possessions, some peoples arent, but I place very little importance on someone's financial value when forming an opinion of someone.

      • This is Australia, we have "tall poppy Syndrome", anyone that shows flashy cars/house just makes everyone else want to knock them down. Check out Salim Mehajeh.

The only people that gets any advantage from a society where luxury/fancy stuff are sought after are the companies that make them - LV makes a mint from the Chinese.

        • -2

Not sure that Salim Mehajeh is a good example to use in this case.

        • @argonbay: Agree - he's a terrible example!

Also money is like Sex - everyone thinks that everyone else has more than them.

        • +2

@Deridas The previous commenters obviously didn't get your point….

  • +3

"hey mate how much you earn?"

    • will private message u ….

      • +9

Why can't you just reply here?

      • +3

Quotation marks made the question rhetorical.

Apart from comparing yourself with others on wealthiness, have you had comparison in terms of the capability to have smarter conversations?

  • +16

Haven't done my tax for the last decade, nice try ATO

how you compare, financially, with your friends and family?

I have the biggest eneloop collection amongst my friends & family so quite obviously I am the financially savvy one.

  • +1

Are fellow ozbargainers considered my friends?

    • +2

Hi friend, can I borrow a dollar?

      • +1

        You can borrow my eneloops?

        • Take your dollar, and leave your OzBargain card behind }=[

  • +6

Are pets considered family or friends? My dogs financial situation is far better than mine.

  • +1

They gather up the crumbs under my table

  • +1

    how you compare financially

We play poker and the loser of each round has to reveal one financial document, e.g. bank statement, Eneloop receipts, etc.

  • +2

I compare myself to ozbargainers…. Coz they're FAMILY

This book may be of interest to you : Status Anxiety by Alain de Botton.

It describes the condition of status anxiety, and once fully understood, how to be free from it by modifying one's perception.

If you prefer to watch the documentary instead, the complete version – which is over 2 hours, 5 episodes. Or you can just track down the individual episodes in youtube.

    Hope this helps.

  • Wow, OP. Wow.

  • +1

None of my friends even have an $80k investment car, bunch of losers.

  • +1

what does it matter about others (friends or family) are financial status??? just worry about your own & if it meets your needs.. NOT WANTS!!!

  • +2

    Who cares?

    • Your trouble and strife

I’m married with 3 little kids, in FT day care, most friends are dating/divorced, with no kids.

I make more money, they have more disposable income. Bit hard to compare apples and bananas.

    • +1

It's a terrible question with no correct answer given so many variables.

    • +1

turning back time, will you have 3 kids again ?

      • +2

        All day every day!

However I would do things very differently. We had twins and then another fairly quickly after. 3 in Day Care was killing us financially, to the point it was costing my partner money to goto work. But if she left the work force, she knew she could never go back (mentally). We then applied for a mortgage and were initially denied as we were one income with 4 dependants and apparently they factor in the cost of a dependants irrespective of what you do/don't pay.. If she got a minimum wage job, we would be fine, despite the fact our net income would be lower.

All the above means nothing when your feeling down (just put an offer on a house, apparently $700,000 isn't enough for a modest family home in regional NSW, but that's another story) and you say to your wife "how are we going to fix this" and from the back of the car you hear "with love" "& chocolate" "I need to wee"

  • I need to apologise to all ozbargainers, except OP. I actually opened this thinking "wow what's wrong with these people" so I was glad most reacted the same way.

    OP: 2 Corinthians 10:12

  • +1

Those who feel the need to compare themselves to others have no hope.

  • I am the best at bargaining, and statistics, by a ratio of 10:7:4:4:3:3.

Grateful there are no 1's in my family.

By judging others you are highly susceptible to receive judgement over praise.

    1 like = 1 prayer

    Ok, noted.

  • I don't. I am a orphan and no-body likes me :(

  • I,m kinder and more generous, financially, than most of my friends and family.
Hopeabout you OP , you haven,t told us how YOU compare.

  • You should be careful comparing yourself to others you don't how much in debt they are. We live in average house, drive (new) average cars. We owe $280k. I have a friends who live in much better house and drive better cars than I do, but do they have as little debt as I do, probably not.

  • +1

In terms of comparisons I make around the same a many, more than some… But I have no debt, healthy savings, and lots of cool toys.

Honestly I love ozbargain, but most of the time I just scroll through impressed at how I seriously cannot find anything to buy that I want or need.

Hence I don't bother comparing to other people. I compare my actual to ideal self, and they are close enough - except my ideal self is much taller and better looking.

  • -1

I owe approx $350k on the house.
    Cars are leased.
    Still making ends meet.
    Kids costing money.
Family and friends are in a similar situation but their cars are free and have smaller debt on there houses.
I believe that I am happier though.
Those haters who have made nasty comments and those stalkers, have a cuppa and relax.
