lol. dude, really? if you want to go get a car wash then just get it. it's plain miserable having to do financial calculations for this stuff.

    • +36

One way you could think of it is, how much is your time worth?
Say it takes 1 hour to do a car wash yourself vs paying $30 bucks to get it done.

Instead of that 1 hour spent washing your car is there something else could you be doing to either generate $30 bucks or save $30 bucks, or is worth more to you than $30 bucks (e.g. spending quality time with your kids)?

If YES, then go pay for that car wash.
If NO, then get of your lazy backside and wash your car yourself. :D

Op has plenty of time to wash the car, his previous posts include this bottler below. He also says that he is running a tight ship, but this post says that he earns decent money & the kids are in a private school -

I have a lot of time on my hands. I earn decently. Should I look for more things to do or just bludge?
        So I work a 40 hour week.
        Earn decent money.
The thing is that I have approx. 15 hours of the 40 hours free.
Most of the time I check facebook etc and just bludge.
Should I be looking for more things to do or just carry on doing what I do?
        Kids are in private school.
        Mrs is working.
Happy as Larry at the moment.

        Past posts include -

Buying a Property 400m from a Train Station but The Strata Is $1900 a Quarter-Castle Hill
        Which BMW To Buy? 2004 M3 or 3005 X5?

Buy Apartment for $600K in Liverpool 2170 or a House for $700K in Camden?
Would you buy an apartment in Liverpool 2170 3bed 2 bath and 2 garage for $600 or a 4 bedder house in Camden for $700K?
I can afford both but the apartment seems like less work and is closer to the train station.
        Your input is much appreciated.

Should We Sell and Build Bigger or Just Stay as Is?
As it stands, our house is worth $550k.
There is a large influx of money in the town and we know that the house prices are going to increase.
Should we sell now and build a bigger house or just stay as we are?
        We can afford to.
If we build it would cost approx. $700k for what we want now.
PS We are in Regional NSW

It doesn't seem as though your ship is that tight & congratulations on paying off your house.

Sounds like you have a bit of time on your hands too, lol! :P

Maybe he was able to pay off his house because his ship it tight?

Pay your kids to wash the car.

          Great work!!

i think you should be careful giving financial advise like this.

OP should get proper financial advice from a licensed adviser.

        • no need because there's no duty of care,

          a) this is a random online post in a public forum
          b) he hasn't paid for the services from a person he knows is accredited and can reasonably expect to rely on

if he believes the advice and it's bad, then it's his own fault, unless poster has some stake and financially benefits from his mishaps, then it's a different can of worms…

      • Hello :D

      • Simple economics really.

The real question is…how many meals (measured by mi goreng noodle packs) is a car wash worth

    • +4

In terms of entertainment ozbargain shits all over netflix.

If you have a car you need to keep it clean to prevent damage so if you have a car then go to a car wash. If you have the ability to wash a car on your own property you will save money using a bucket and hose but many people live in a flat and therefore don't have access to a hose so you'll have little choice but to visit a car wash. They aren't that expensive so go for it.

    • Is a layer of dirt actually damaging anything … isn't it more like protecting it actually?

      • +11

Bird crap and other acids will eat the paint.

    • +1

many people live in a flat and therefore don't have access to a hose so you'll have little choice but to visit a car wash.

Buy a bucket & sponge, then you can wash your car anywhere there is a tap, problem solved.

      • or the tap can be walking distance away.. even better!

  • what type of vehicle do you have? do you take more than one hour to wash it?

  • +1

When you buy a new car

Depends on what type of car wash though. If your talking automatic, then maybe never. By the time its economical the standards might be too low

  • +18

But seriously, why don't you get your 9 year old to wash your BMW

    • +1

Can you trust that your kid won't scratch your car?

      • Yes.

    • His 9 year old hasn't the time to wash the car, far to busy trolling people on the net like their Dad.

  • +18

Just collect the water from your shower and use it to clean the car

  • +3

    Just wash it

It is just going to cost 5 to 10 dollars

  • +22

If running a tight ship wash at home where its cheaper

    • This was my thought too.

If you can afford a ship then a car wash should be fine.

  • +19

Jeeez, this one takes the biscuit, it's not a difficult thing to work out, you can or can't afford it.

If you want someone to clear your conscience about being lazy not going to happen

It isn't determined by wage bracket it's determined by priorities,

get the soap and sponge out next time it rains and take a cold shower while you wash it if it's that difficult and think about things.

    • -2

Jeeez, this one takes the biscuit, it's not a difficult thing to work out, you can or can't afford it.

It's as difficult as you want to make it.
If you're a regular joe it's a case of is it in your bank account.
If you're trying to save the world (or more often harboring delusions to that effect) every $ you waste is potentially one less day of life for somebody in the 3rd world

      wiiiide spectrum between those two

      • OP is talking about himself and financial position.

        not saving the world

Just wondering how much should u earn, before u think it is ok to go for a car wash?
Running a tight ship here and crunching the numbers.

If it's anything different he needs to change the info.

It's called context, not lets just make up a story to fit your view

        • -1

lets just make up a story to fit your view

That's what we all do, as humans, all the time. We make up stories for people to fill in the gaps of what we know about them.

There's not enough information given here to form a clear picture of who the OP is or where his motivations lie. All we know is he doesn't feel entitled to spend money on a carwash until he's reached a certain threshold of income. Not whether he can afford it, but does it make fiscal sense. That's the point you missed

        • @outlander:

your arguing my point for me.

so what now do i call myself outlander and quote a sentance of yours and re write it into a novel.

Play somewhere else this isn't useful

          @outlander:
          Agree with outlander

        • @MishyMoo:
Does it really make sense, what I said?

          @outlander:

          It absolutely makes sense

        • @MishyMoo:
Thanks, that's a relief to hear. Never quite sure how far off center my ideas are, and whether they've strayed into 'crazy' territory.

        • -1

          @outlander:
Take heart. Being the odd one has its advantages. In this case, personal integrity… standing up for the guy who is being picked on, while the vultures feel the need to gang up on him and watch while he gets kicked around.
It says a lot about human behaviour

  • +11

None, mate. I love the pleasure of washing my car, seriously. A decent time to admire my purchase from the outside.

    • +7

That look back after you park it feeling.

  • +54

Only when your car is an $80k high yield investment that will get you promoted at work, then you can take it to a car wash.

    • +5

Insta promotion from the boss once high yielding investment is purchased.

    • +3

No you wash it yourself thats a sure fire way to destroy that high yield investment, who the hell gets promotions for having a nice car.

Brushless ones have shitty chemicals that destroy the coating

Brushed ones i've seen so may cars damaged by them i won't use them.

      I'm with galileo

      • +26

who the hell gets promotions for having a nice car.

        Westpac employees

        • FML i'd love to see that corporate policy think someone might be telling porkies

        • +1

I just asked a mate who works at Westpac he wants to know who he needs to see

Is offering to order the new Aston Martin DB11 if you can tell him where the hell to find this because if an 80 k car gets you a promotion, he was ripped off didn't get his.

he figures the Aston should be worthy of a VP type level promotion by your statement.

        • +4

@Toons: have a read at this gem of a thread for where this 80k car as high yielding investment came from.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/273269

          Emphasis on the below

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/4128667/redir

        • @xoom: Exactly all i read is bullsh't the only reason that Westpac would be wanting you to buy an expensive car is so they can make more money back from you

          Loan

          Insurance

It's just as ridiculous as the time i was told to buy white because it's a more executive statement. when buying through corporate program, real reason 4 white cars available immediately colour i wanted was a month away.

we have people earning upwards of 750,000 known salary, they may have a nice car at home but they ride a pushbike to work.

        • +12

@Toons: man someone missed the joke…

        • -4

          @Halsmich:

Perhaps, fair point before @xoom pointed out the previous thread it, would have been more helpful rather than being condescending for @onetwothree to put the reference like @xoom

How was one to know it had been discussed, not everyone spends their life on here!

At what stage can you purchase 3 ply without intent to split it back into 3 seperate rolls?

    • +7

You're purchasing toilet paper? Bloody oath you must be loaded. Rest of us have to pinch it from public toilets

      • I like to get the stuff from the heroin dunnies that someone already peed all over.

  • +1

Never pay to have it done.

  • +3

People seem to be bagging out the OP but in some places those auto car washes are $15 and upwards. If you live in a flat/apartment you might not have access to a hose to wash it yourself.

Anyway, you can do a very basic clean at the self serve car wash for a couple of dollars. To keep the cost down you have to be very quick. It won't leave the car pristine but it will wash off the bulk of the dust and dirt.

    • +12

I get the point sparkles, having said that It's ozbargain not ozretard.

      • +2
