Butchered cars are worth less. Doesn’t need to be done.

Source: owns of a rhd muscle car.

      • This is an example of why they have all 'evaporated' here ,
        not a recommendation.

BTW what kind of American classic do you have and size/type motor?

  • +3

    Lederhosen

    • -5

Lame. Has not even got to do anything with Germany but simply with Bavaria who is a Free State and wants to secede and is 1 of 16 German states. It is like referring to Australia by calling it Queensland or Victoria.

      • Lame. Has not even got to do anything with Germany except being in Germany.

OP has not said that they are not staying in Munich or surrounds, so why should it be discounted?

You're saying if something is available only in Victoria, and if you're staying in NSW, it's inaccessible.

        • +1

No, simply that by using some stereotypical symbol for the whole of a country is lame - all of my German friends are quite offended by this. Also, I think we are talking widely available as otherwise I could list plenty of things available in only one town or village which would not be very helpful.

        • @Lysander: > all of my German friends are quite offended

Sounds like reminiscing the past? All of my German relatives/mates are friendly and open. I haven't asked them personally if they're offended to be in the same country as people who wear lederhosen (as this was only brought up 3 hours ago, and it being 4am in Germany), but I'd gamble that they won't be offended.

If anything, I'd expect you / your German friends to comment on this rather than an inoffensive comment.

I understand what you're saying, like American's being associated with guns and religion. But this isn't the same. This is like saying buy a pickup truck when you're in USA. Sure, you might be going to North Dakota, not Texas, but OP might be willing to venture down to experience something else AND wear some leather chaps as a keep sake to remember said experience.

I could list plenty of things available in only one town or village

Please do. Leave it up for the OP whether or not they want to venture out of the location they're in.

        • @rompastompa:

It is not being offended about Lederhosen but being reduced to ONE Bavarian traditional symbol when the majority of German are not from Bavaria. And no, my friends are not old school but range from their 20s to 40s.

Sure, there is a place in NRW where one can buy Gummiebearschnaps. And another where one can buy a great variety of schnaps with virtually any taste one can think of.
And another one where the hand-make cockoo-clocks with digital technology and wi-fi. And the list goes on and on.
Pretty futile. If OP said where they will be, then targeted advice could be provided. Where my friends etc. are from one could not even buy Lederhosen so if the OP goes there that suggestion would be futile too.

I would feel offended if all Australia would be reduced to say XXXL Beer, or the Tasmanian Devil etc. There is so much more to the country (and Germany).

        • @Lysander: > Australia would be reduced to say XXXL Beer

Well it kinda is, Internationally it's called Foster's.

        • @rompastompa:

So all Australia is is Foster's?

And you are happy with that?

        • +1

@Lysander: It doesn't bother my one bit. There are many other things that are offensive, a lack of culture on one's behalf should be the least of someone's problems.

        • @Lysander:

          XXXL Beer

          what

        • @Lysander: who gives a shit?

      • +4

I live in Bavaria and when I have been in other countries and seen people wearing traditional tracht dirndls lederhosen I've gone up to them and asked if their from Bavaria and sometimes they are from the north but they accept that people outside of Germany see lederhosen as German not Bavarian… Embrace the labels your given just like Aussie's with sharks and spider and snakes.. You just gotta use it in your favour..

        • Fair enough but it is just a bit ignorant to ignore and dispense with the regional cultures and traditions of the 15 other states for the benefit of lederhosen. I could go into what "symbolism" I experienced when going to high school in the US (with no change in behaviour of the people who used that symbol for Germany which could also easily be embraced - and still frequently is by the British media, especially when the national football team suffers a high loss against Germany") but this is not the right place for that.
My friends etc. are proud of their own regional traditions and cultures and do not like being reduced to being Bavarian because of lederhosen.
It is like calling the Netherlands Holland - simply ignores all other states/provinces of the country.

Jaegermeister and Kirsch liquor are cheap.

    • I bought some kirsch while I was in Switzerland thinking it was like schnapps. Never again.

  • +1

Bamix hand-held blender. These are hands-down the best hand blenders in the world and last forever, but are insanely expensive. They are actually Swiss made and branded ESGE Zauberstab in Europe, but I spotted some in a shop in Germany and paid around $200 for one that would have cost around $500 in Oz.

  • I recall another post saying Germany is the place to buy disposable razors.

Bring back a suitcase full and sell them to ozbargainers

  • Aldi

    • +3

People downvote this, but when in Germany do go and visit ALDI and its direct competitor, LIDL. They have a different range of products. Booze is really cheap there (700ml vodka for AU$12 anyone?). ALDI's range of salami, cured meats and dried sausages is far larger and better than it is here.

      • Not withstanding exchange rate it does seem day to day things are cheaper in Germany.

        • Alcohol is cheaper, but items such as clothes and everyday food items appeared to be the same price here as over there. In the past couple of years I've been to Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and the USA, and specifically looked at the price of milk. Farmers are kicking up a huge fuss about dollar per litre milk here driving them out of business, but milk is a bit under $1/L in the above countries too.

The one freakishly cheap item was eggs at Walmart for US$0.66 per dozen. I have never seen anywhere near that price here.

    Buy memories.

Instead of buying things that are just cheap, spend that € on some experiences that you wouldn't normally.

    • +4

Buy a camera and take some photos that you'll want to look at again later.

Everyone saying bratwurst, but I reckon go the kasekrainer!

  • ABSOLUTELY NOTHING !
We are at a 9 year low against the Euro.
In fact the $AU has recently collapsed against the Euro.
Mid Feb you could buy Eur 72.8. Now its only Eur 62.9.
Hence everything in Euros will be way overpriced compared with just 3 weeks ago.
Unless this changes not worth buying anything from Europe.

    • +1

Moving to Germany next week. You have just broken my heart 💔

      • +1

If you are moving there to work, then save and think of how great the currency conversion will be when you come back yo Aus :)

      • Welcome to the club.. Ozbargainers living in Germany and getting ripped off by the euro..

      • Not really. Your newly earnt Euros will buy more Aussie dollars. Its a windfall gain.

    • Damn. For the last year I've been looking at USD only and thinking we're not going too bad. This is an old habit that worked for Asia and South America.

Of course I'm travelling to Europe soon and now I discover the British Pound and Euro are doing marvellously for themselves…

    • +5

"Hence everything in Euros will be way overpriced compared with just 3 weeks ago."

Please don't provide financial advice, you clearly can't even read a graph.

In Mid Feb 2017 you could buy Eur 72.8. Now (March 2018) its only Eur 62.9

Hence everything in Euros will cost more compared with just 3 weeks ago over a year ago.

  • Look for Hugo Boss on sale.

  • I went a couple of years ago and actually bought lederhosen from a factory outside of Munich. We were just cruising around Bavaria (in a BMW 4 Series GT - heaven) and id read up about this place. Had to use my year 8 German but got it all sorted. The pants alone were E250 but even here at Oktoberfest in Canberra I’ve had germans come and check out my kit. Good quality and not the crap tourist stuff

  • Don't buy stuff for the sake of buying stuff or to some how recoup the cost of the trip via crap you don't need just because it's cheaper.

  • High yield cars.

European girlfriends have a good reputation, if you have enough time left to wooo one
    ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

    • +3

Scandinavian one's have a higher rating. Dutch girls are more promiscuous. Italian can cook, but tend to grow large after marriage. Swiss one's are good in accounting. French one's are complicated ( to understand ). Spanish are fiery. East county ladies are after your money, tend to give birth to 2 children and then divorce and live of your ailments.

      • +1

Haha, I thought we weren't doing stereotypes in this thread?

      • +1

        Now do Asians.

        • They love you long time?

i'm looking for a wife, any suggestions?

This sounds like a new top thread topic for OzBargain, considering the retarded threads we have been having lately.

      • Meet a woman, and fall in love first. :)

  • What about official FC Bayern Munich jerseys and pants, and socks and so on. Then resell here to the FAN.

  • +5

Don't bother buying anything, do things there.

Hire a Porsche 911 from AVIS (yes, seriously), and go driving on the autobahns. Go down to the Nurburgring and hire a cheap car and drive the racetrack for a few euro. It's amazing.

Go to beer halls, enjoy yourself.

    • Be sure not to go to "beer halls" then race driving :/ .
Perhaps just as importantly, if you are not feeling competent driving, dont go driving 300km on autobarn. Probably a bad idea.
Autobarn is definitely something I would like to try at high speeds, but I would be very careful, and give myself time to become comfortable with driving the rental, before kicking it up to top speeds on autobarn.

      • +7

High speed in Autobarn is a bad idea, you'll knock over shelves of air fresheners. Better to use the autobahn.

      • +2

"Autobarn is definitely something I would like to try at high speeds, but I would be very careful, and give myself time to become comfortable with driving the rental, before kicking it up to top speeds on autobarn"

Absolutely, but be prepared. It'll make you very humble.

I was doing 240 and was overtaken by a family of 4 in a station wagon.

    • +2

      Very nice.

From Monday to Friday, Avis offers you the after-work special: Rent a Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, a 911 Carrera Cabriolet, a 911 Targa or a Panamera for 149 €. The Porsche Macan and the Porsche Cayenne are already available for € 119 - including 100 free kilometers. From 4:00 pm to 9:00 am the next morning, evening and night activites can rent our sports cars. You save € 100 compared to a regular daily rent.

    • You can’t take a hire car from anywhere in Europe on the Ring. Read the conditions.

      • How hard is to driving LHD really? Been toying with legally renting a race-ready car from 1 of the garages around the Nurburgring for ages.

        • It’s not hard.

        • It's easy. You'll get used to it in 10 minutes.

      • You can, you're liable though.

What you can do is rent cars from Nurburg specifically for the ring. I've had some really great times in a Clio RS, an MX5, a Golf GTI, and a couple others I can't think of at the moment.

  • I’d try and get something from the Volkswagen factory (not a big fan of VW personally but it is the biggest car plant in the world). I’d also go to the theme park there, I think there’s one right? Get a photo on one of those hellish roller coasters! Also I’d go to one of the Castles and I’d get some cups or coasters. I don’t use placemats that much but they are bigger and would show a better pic of a castle so that would be neat.

    • Ive actually been to Autostadt which is Vw plant in wolfsburg. They actually produce VW brand wurst there!

  • +1

Bring me back a nice blonde Fräulein :)

  • I brought a couple oF MACE canisters back a few years ago from Germany for personal protection.

They are so full of propellant the spray goes right across the room.

Did you tick the Customs checkbox on the way into Australia that you were carrying weapons into the country?

Take a photo of the longest German word you can find. It's a language famous for forgetting the space bar.

Nerve gas, I hear there's is quite good.

And back to that penalty box lol

On a serious note I'd pack all that German food and beer in my gut then buy some beer mugs ect to take home.

Don't forget to bring loads of it.

  • 22 seat ovens

  • OP, are you into mountain bikes? You can get some awesome bike and bike related stuff.

  • VW Diesel

  • Wursthofnor zwillinge kitchen knives.. They're allot cheaper then you'll get back home.. And you can also claim the tourist refund making them cheaper again awesome quality n

  • Yes , just start mailing stuff home , tools , kitchen knives , strange Bavarian dancing pants ,ect ,
and give out your address and invites to all the beautiful German Girls you can.

    • Aww, German girls when I was there all seemed to be very serious i thought. The girls from the other european countries, are a different story though.

  • Sneakers!

    • Sneakers? Are they cheaper? Or more unique?

      • Both.

I picked up a pair of Karl Kani shoes on my first trip a long time ago.

Also if you like timepieces, Germany is a great place for this.

  • +2

Not sure if anyone mentioned this here before.

Kitchen steelware. Cutlery, knives, pots and pans etc.

WMF, Wusthof, Zwilling. All great brands, that are sold in almost every departmental stores and even have their own stand alone stores in most places. The prices I've seen (when the stuff is actually sold in Australia), its about 20-30% cheaper than Australia (sometimes even more when on sale etc) after exchange but before the VAT refund (I consider the vat refund a bonus because its run by a 3rd party company).

After buying a few of those stuff in Germany, I would not even give a second glance to the overpriced stuff sold in Australia.

  • Having lived in germany for a year i can say some electronic devices are cheaper in germany than in Australia e.g boose headphones, wireless speakers and so on. I have also found clothing are much cheaper in germany, adidas, nike and other brands Germany cahrges 19% VAT (Gst) but at the airport you will only get back 10% if you are dealing with the right VAT refund company.
If i ever where to go back i would get some anker products from Amazon such as the power bank and iphone cords.

  • Lederhosen

  • A high yield investment: Porsche

  • Shepherd

  • Stowa and Pelikan factory tours.

  • We went there for 3 weeks. Managed to score quite a few Birkenstocks. But cheaper at their outlets though.

lamy pens, but perhaps they are too "low end" for you.

Where in Germany are you going?
I go ever year pretty much, last was July '17, next is June '18.

    • Yeah saw plenty of lamy pens last trip. But they are just for writing…

      • Exactly, so they actually get used and not just sit in a cupboard.

I bought some last trip for each of my staff

  • Just eat the food and the pastries and leave the shopping for the US
