First time poster, long time reader so thanks for your understading

I was looking at this on the Kogan website and they have it listed for 299, I happened to check it and they have it for 209 on Dick Smith's Website.
As far as I can tell this is the same device with the same specs. If you are interested in a mini pc then this is an easy way to save yourself 90 bucks excluding shipping.

$220.25 from ebay, PICK5 coupon code., Dick smith site

these look like modified and rebadged version of the "AK1" Windows TV Box, sold from China for around $170 US dollars.

    Here is a teardown and a review….

    • Literally a dollar more than the OEM version. I wonder if they're kind enough to put the drivers on the 32GB partition?

Almost same specs as the NUC I bought last year. Mine came with 2GB RAM not 4.

Windows on the 32GB partition is a real pain. Updates end up in loops due to lack of storage even with a HDD installed. Have finally managed to upgrade to fall creator and set metered connections so hopefully I have that sorted. Prevents me from recommending these to others. If you can install or transfer Windows onto SSD/HDD it won't be a problem.

NUCs also have had issues with graphics and USB drivers. Latest firmware has fixed that for me. But this would have differnt firmware.

    Surprisingly capable machines.

Agree with you. For Pete sake never ever run Windows OS on a 32GB storage. I fell for this trap too. I thought just an OS and MS Office won't do any harm for primary school kids, but I was wrong. Within a year the laptop became useless. Every time you launch it say run out of space. Even though all files are storaged in a seperate SD card. I'm thinking of uninstalling office and just put only MS Word. 64gb should be a must for Windows based PC.

you need to run the major updates from a usb stick or drive ….. 32gb isn't enough sometimes for full blown win 10 , and a new version of win10 for the upgrade.

        • Tried that. Complete waste of time. MS won't use either a HDD, SD card or USB stick. It insists on trying to install, failing due to lack of space. Then you delete the files and try to reboot, and it happens again. Nice little loop.

Even worse, on my NUC, reboot doesn't recognise an inserted SD card until you remove and reinsert it. You'd think Intel would know how to make solid drivers, but that is the one weakness of the NUC - awful buggy drivers and firmware.

        • windows keeps an old image on the main patition so it can do a roll back, that needs to be deleted …. the update you want to install need to be downloaded manually from the Microsoft catalogue onto the usb hard drive …. then you launch it from there, it now has enough space to copy the existing version as a roll-back backup, and also install new one from the usb harddrive ……works every time for me.

Actually my local Aldi has a mini pc pack on clearance with keyboard and mouse for $199.

I'm considering getting one. Ditch Wangdows and run up Linux on it.

  • this looks very similar to HP

It's quite good at $209 + $15 shipping, but you can get one of those $50 off Kogan vouchers for $10 or so on eBay and use Shipster for free shipping. At $160-ish, this is a great deal. You can get a 240GB SSD for like $80 on Kogan after another voucher.

So for $240, you've got a pretty solid machine. I use one of these in my living room and they're much better than a TV box, a lot more flexible and customisable.

plus start a new account via referral and get a further $10 voucher (offset the cost of the $50 voucher).

      and shipster free delivery.

but then, I'd rather use a headless laptop with SSD OS and maxed out RAM

    • Great idea but won't work. The prices are jacked up on the main Kogan site!

      • Vouchers also work on Dick Smith.

  • I am looking to run a dedicated music server using Daphile (https://www.daphile.com). Wondering if this is a good platform for it.

    • Daphile runs on the smell of an oily rag! This should have no problems running it. Been running it for years on a 13 year old laptop

  • Does anyone know if this unit has a built in fan?

    • +2

Yes it has a fan, it can get a little noisy, it's silent when idle. It has a mini pci-e slot but I don't know if it's active. Ram is not upgradable, 32gb storage is onboard and non replaceable as well.
