    how's this compares to voll a44 ?

is this active or passive ?

    • passive

Check the reviews before buying - despite the "5 star rating" from What hifi, the street reviews do not fair anywhere near as well.

      • +1

        Amazon Customer Reviews

4.2 out of 5. One reviewer gave a 3 "Also, you need to buy an amplifier and quality wires in addition to this product. It's probably common sense to most of you, but I didn't realise and had to wait an extra week before being able to use these."

        • +3

Don't just trust Amazon, there are far better (more reliable) places to get an idea of how these perform.

Don't be silly and neg good advice (I'm recommending people do some research - THAT'S A GOOD THING TO DO)

Even if you disagree with my comment, it's still sound advice.

        • @iDroid:

Please link to these "street reviews" and "far better" reviews, I would like to read them.

Why shouldn't I trust Amazon reviews?
          Why shouldn't I trust What Hi-Fi reviews?

need to buy an amplifier and quality wires

          or,.. wireless amplifier?

        • +3

          @Baysew:

Please link to these "street reviews" and "far better" reviews, I would like to read them.

"far better places" not "reviews" (but I don't disagree, that there are probably better review there too).

It's not a great idea for me to post some cherry picked examples (because that's what I'd have to do - I can't paste a sample link without doing).

But doing a google search for "Wharfedale Diamond 121 Bookshelf Speaker", the link below the Amazon link in the results is: http://www.firstpost.com/tech/reviews/wharfedale-diamond-121…

Review score 3.5/5, User score: 2/5 (IMO qualifies as "do not fair anywhere near as well")

If you search explicitly for bad reviews then you'll get plenty. But that is not necessarily a fair representation.

Hence, own research is of greater value.

Why shouldn't I trust Amazon reviews?

I didn't say "Don't trust Amazon reviews", I said "Don't just trust Amazon".

But if I had said that, then my reply would have been:

Putting aside any paid shrill reviews, using Amazon reviews to judge the performance of a speaker is as good value as asking a random stranger (it's the average of a set of random strangers opinion's). A percentage of reviews will be based on the sellers performance. A percentage will vote 5 stars because the product arrived fast and in good working order. The vast majority of the Amazon reviews are not based on any critical analysis. Some are. This obviously goes both ways - some will give 1 star because the delivery driver had a funny smell about them - point holds, these reviews are not the reviews you're looking for.

Amazon reviews may have value for some things, but for critical analysis of a products performance ….. I doubt it's of much value.

          Why shouldn't I trust What Hi-Fi reviews?

          Again, I never said that.

I'd never trust any one review. I'd seek the opinion of many reviews and assess why they gave that score, weigh that against what's important for me and base my decision on that.

I emphasised me there because what I find important or like may differ to others. Hence why I suggested that others should do some research before buying because what I saw of the things that are important to me, these did not qualify for a 5 star review, YMMV.

        • @iDroid: It seem quite harsh to neg this deal based on "street reviews do not fair anywhere near as well".

I tried to find negative reviews, as I am interested in the comments, but all the reviews seem quite positive towards these speakers. Generally Wharfedale is a well known Hi-Fi speaker brand, this model seems to produce good results when compared to other brands in this range. The OP has presented quite a good deal.

I cannot see any justification for you negging this deal.

        • @Baysew: That's actually good.

I mentioned to do some research and not blindly buy because it got a 5 star review as described.

If your research suggests they're good for you, then I don't see why you shouldn't get them if you want them.

Giving advice to do some research is IMO good advice. I did so because there are a number of none 5 start reviews for this also - it'd be prudent to check.

        • @iDroid: So why neg the deal?

        • +1

@Baysew: My negging the deal had absolutely nothing to do with my comments here.

I negged the deal because the OP was (IMO) a bit rude to other commentators here (initially) and I thought it was poor form and not appropriate. Which I thought was fair.

I most certainly did not neg this deal based on the product on offer.

Word on the street says buy cheap speakers from your nearest White Van.

        • On a unrelated note I got some marc vincents for a special super dooper limited offer for you….. :P

    • I'm curious too. I've got the passive Volls and would like to know if this is better or worse sound.

While the Voll 44 may be good for it's size and price, the Diamond is a larger speaker with bigger woofer. If you are using the Voll as computer speakers, that is fine. For hi-fi speakers in the lounge, the Diamond will be more suitable. I have a pair of Voll B44v2 connected in the lounge right now but I do not have a pair of Diamonds to directly compare them. However, I have used earlier version of the diamonds and I remember what they can do. I would pick the Diamonds any day. Unless you want to use the speakers on your desk as computer speakers, for the sale price, for hifi use, I would pick up a pair.

  • Would these be a waste for rear surrounds?

Good price. Postage kills it for those of us who are not anywhere near the store.
    Shame.

Replying with smart ass comments isn't going to endear you to the OzB community. You've been here long enough, you should know better.

          @atish digitalcinema: Dick cheese?

Reps fail to understand that they came here to make a sale on their own accord. If they don't like it here then stay away, there's plenty of options around for us. To post a deal and then a comment like that.. it just boggles the mind. I guess the next thing to do is CTRL + W.

        • -7

@m9: LOL you think most OZBers actually buy? The sit and think for half a week and then complain about missing out when all sold out. Lets not forget the cliched generic comments like "if you only the wife would let me". However the OZbers who do buy almost always make an effort to point out that they are not like other OZbers. I have a lot of love for ozb because of the amount of money I have saved and the amount of hits we get thru ozb, but a lot ozbers I got no time for.

@atish digitalcinema: How can you be in sales/retail if you keep criticising every tyre kicker you come across? Just smile and move along to the next potential customer. Or in this instance just keep scrolling to the next comment. I wasn't planning on buying, but if I was I still wouldn't buy from you because of your 💩 attitude.

  • Which one is cinnamon cherry? I can't tell, too many similar names to work it out

Edit: ok, mobile website wasnt adjusting picture based on the drop down box. The full website is.

It's a light colour. I like it but I'd have to replace the couches, they're a dark brown colour. Most of the other colours you can't tell the diff, they're all dark brown

    • -1

I have the "Wenge" colour which is like a dark brown/chocolate I might be able to do for that price. Please call me if you are serious and I will get warehouse to look for it

      • I'd buy in a heartbeat if these came in white. :)

        • Are you open to other brands?

          JBL Studio 120?

      • Thanks. I need to do research first. These weren't on my radar. If I did anything I'd need two pair.

I need to downsize my b&w 602 s3 and lcr60 to something smaller because they don't fit in the new house. It's a very awkward house. But it's low priority vs baby proofing and structural repair

        • Ok do keep us in mind. Also what amp are you going to use?

        • @atish digitalcinema:

Not sure. I have an onkyo tx sr707, but its listed for sale on eBay since I've gone 4k on the tv.

I'm looking to run a 4.1 speaker setup. No centre, there's no point since all seats are directly in front of the tv. Maybe a second 2.1 zone.

Every speaker I currently have can be biamped.. But they don't make amps with 12 terminals i guess ;)

Yeah i do keep you in mind. I've been subscribed to your posts on here for ages

        • @justtoreply: If you do have an awkward room, don't forget to use your Audyssey mc setup to get optimum performance.
