Samsung Portable SSD T3 250GB External Solid State Drive $129 Delivered

Looks to be a good price at $129 with free delivery, it just dropped from $145. The cheapest previous deal I could see was $135.15 delivered. Currently it's $135.20 upwards via eBay 20% off deal.

Deal is available for 4 days or until sold out. Use code SIPS-1 for free shipping, it should add it automatically, appears to work outside metro areas with a higher post cost from limited testing.

  • have a slim iMac 27” with normal hard drive, can I use this as main drive externally?

    • I think you can. Please Read this

    • Been using one for about six months works beautifully

    • Just ordered one to use with my 5k iMac. I know the T5 will work, this one is only a few mb slower, so it shouldnt be a problem.

  • Was about to ask same question, does anyone know what internal ssd this one uses as I’m deciding on this or 850 EVO

    • You won't be able to use this one as an internal drive. Are you planning on using the Evo as an external or internal ?

      • Yes, I will need a case for the EVO to use externally

        • The one in OP would be better than a DIY solution particularly due to the extra speed achieved by USB-C. If you're computer doesn't have USB-C then an DIY solution is just as good.

This one by ORICO is very popular and on sale often. Otherwise MSY occasionally have cheap offerings.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/orico-2139u3

        • @Clear: Apart from USB-C and size do these have any other advantages over a DIY kit? I mean you get more bang for buck with a DIY kit and if you're travelling you can always have it in a backpack.

Are these stronger or more durable in any way?

        • @Clear:
Question is the speed on this ssd compared to 850 EVO

        • +2

@YellowKnight: for DIY kit you're gonna be speed limited by the USB hdd enclosure chip. This Samsung SSD is more optimised.

        • @YellowKnight:

Are these stronger or more durable in any way

DIY kits can be less durable. The Orico I linked is a slide on with no screws to properly hold it in place and in some the SSD can partially slide off the SATA port.

        • @99altezza: As thanghuu said it depends on the enclosure and it's chip. Speed differences are going to be minimal anyway so it doesn't matter.

        • @thanghuu: What would I look for when investigating HDD enclosures then? What is UASP? Would this one work?

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/orico-2139u3

        • @Clear:
As the enclosures would be USB 3.0 that I'll be getting, the T3 is USB 3.1, so I guess the T3 wins out???

        • @99altezza: Technically speaking there is no USB 3.0. Only USB 3.1 and 3.1 Gen2. If you don't have a USB-C device then there is no real benefit from the T3 besides better durability and optimisation.

        • @Clear: OK, do you know if IMAC 2014 have USB-C?

        • @99altezza:

OK, do you know if IMAC 2014 have USB-C?

So your know what fuel your car takes or do you ask a random person at the service station each time?

It's largely irrelevant anyway as you can adapt this to type A USB with the included cable.

        • @Maverick-au:
Petrol & diesel does not compare to the amount of cables u can plug into ur computer these days. USB 2.0, 3.0, 3.1 or USB C, Thunderbolt etc…. Gotta compare b4 purchase.

        • @99altezza: This one? Doesn't look like it.

        • @Clear: >due to the extra speed achieved by USB-C

I'm going to assume that's the same speed achieved by a USB 3.1 Gen1 UASP enclosure which cost about 15 bucks.

        • @YellowKnight:

I have both a 2.5" drive in an Orico case and a couple of external SSDs (Samsung and WD).
The external SSDs are smaller and definitely more durable IMO…worth the extra money.
I only tried the Orico case because I had a spare SSD and wanted to get some use out of it.

If I was to consider a DIY kit again it'd only be an m.2 drive in a Silverstone MS09 enclosure.

        • @tumor: m.2 drives are ridiculously expensive in regards to bang for buck

        • @tumor: Would this be faster than the SSD and would it work with video editing from an external drive?

good luck finding it anywhere… :P

      • None anywhere mate. These look to be clearance stock.

        • -1

not true, in stock at Underwood OW. Jokes the lady thought I was asking for the T5…

      • +1

        no worries.

        I gave myself a down vote. :)

  • 500gb version please

  • Is there any real advantage in an SSD portable drive apart from 400mb/s read/write compared to 130mb/s read/write for a standard portable hard drive? i have a seagate ultra slim 2tb and it's barely bigger than this SSD drive. I guess maybe the SSD based version would be less susceptible to data loss from impact damage?

    • +1

Physical size (these things are nuts, so tiny and light), speed and a bit more resistance to impact damage.

If you're encrypting files/the volume, the SSD is the go.

      • +1

bit more resistance to impact damage.

        I'd say a lot more

    • Reliability, less moving parts. Also faster.

      • +1

        no moving parts haha

    • +2

The size.. I have a T1 and these things are tiny. Closer to the size of a couple of stacked credit cards than a normal portable HDD. The speed is also a big deal, depending on what you're using the drive for. Personally I use mine for all the video Ihat I shoot. When you start working with 4k video, the sizes get ridiculous pretty quickly, and this drive has been perfect.

    • +2

Other than the other responses above, its the transfer of little files thats really night and day over a HDD.
Those numbers you quoted would only come into play if you were transferring HD movies or something similar.
Take a bunch of mixed sized typical desktop files and ive seen it at least 10 times faster…

    • +2

The speed is way way faster and the iops is incomparable. If you have a folder with 10,000+ files like a backup of your documents folder or similar the transfer speed is reduced from half an hr to under 5mins.

    • +1

I brought the T5 version off amazon which arrived yesterday for USD109. I'm using as a archive drive to back up precious family film footage. Do not trust a portable drive to keep working due to moving parts.

  • +1

Samsung unveiled a 30TB SSD drive yesterday. Maybe prices for these smaller drives will drop soon :D

    • +1

      I doubt 30TB would impact 250GB prices.

    • +1

I don't think it will, they are simply using 32x 1TB packages of NAND flash, with each package containing 16 layers of 512Gb 3-bit-per-cell V-NAND so it's actually nothing 'special' per say but is 'physically larger' than the more common 2.5" SSD drives, it's also SAS attached and not SATA from what I recall so more for business use than home use as SAS interface is 12Gbps were SATA is stilly only 6Gbps so it might be good for company RAID systems that can support that high throughput BUT it's not going to be cheap by any means considering it's 32x 1TB packages inside…

      • Relax all.. I was just kidding :O

I would never buy a Samsung branded product ever again anyways.

        • +1

It would be great if it did reduce the price, unfortunately, I just don't think the 30TB SSD is going to do that :-( (really wish it was) as I'm after around a 4TB SSD but they are still too expensive for me currently…

Out of interest what issues did you have with Samsung that you would not buy them again, I have quite a few of their SSD drives and so far they have been really great units (touch wood)

        • +1

@Jonc: Oh just two failed phones and 1 TV. Vehemently hated the brand after that. Friends of mine have had TVs fail and even one case of a laptop (the only person I know who owned a Samsung laptop) that croaked.

Cant really speak for their SSDs though..

      • +2

I think my C64 actually had a tape drive.. Floppy drives were for the rich folk! :P

        • I was rich. Sold those games for $2 a disk.

  • +1

I purchased one of these a year or two ago. Best money spent! I use it as my Steam Library and for any portable programs so it doesn't fill up my internal ssd. Never had any problems running programs/Witcher3 off it. I take it to work with me every day for generic file storage. Highly recommended! Usable space on mine is 232GB.

  • I'm getting charged for shipping on top of $129, is there a free shipping code?

    Hello hamza

  • Will this work with xbox one?

    • Does Xbox One have USB C connection?

  • Got with free shipping to 3305. Thanks OP.

  • +2

I have the T5 for about 50 bucks more, it's worth the warranty and speed increase if you use it for work and move large files around a lot.

Costco has these one's for the same price, saw them at Costco Casula 2 weeks ago.

  • 500GB $247.20. Somewhat better price per GB with P20TECH code.

  • As someone who got one of these years ago (admittedly, USB 3 version) DON'T get one. Get an SSD and an enclosure - cheaper and more useful in that you can use it as an internal drive too.

I did have a specific purpose though - it was for transporting and using VMs I needed for my TAFE course and I needed USB 3 speeds minimum.
