Basically same experience, brought one to move all unifi system but lack features compare to old pfsense box. Never had chance to test stability due to fact I return my Dream machine pro and upgraded hardware and stick with pfsense.

For most people it will be fine, still would suggested Asus as they usually much cheaper for pretty same outcome for a average household. The wifi works and speed is good enough to stream Netflix, tiktok, zoom calls etc.

        • Same. I don't know if it is the UDM or the supplied modem in bridge mode that's dropping. Pfsense is rock solid. Using that at work and haven't rebooted in over a year. I'm going to get a TP Link W9970 to use as the modem in bridge to rule out the modem.

      • I've never had to reboot my UDM for anything.

I have had problems with dodgy firmware updates and "advanced" wifi features causing issues and then refusing to turn off, but once I disabled the feature everything has been perfect.

        • What's the advanced features you turned off?

          • @willoz: The main one causing me problems was the minimum wifi connection speed (I forget the name), not only did it seem to drop clients that were well above the limit, it also kept turning itself back on. It was a terrible feature anyway because it seemed to ban those clients from reconnecting unless the UDM was rebooted.

      • For people with the inclination to learn how to configure networking it's worthwhile to move on from all-in-one devices. The likes of Ubiquiti EdgeRouter or Mikrotik routers coupled with an Access Point generally will be more robust. The industrial routers sometimes run for years of up time - probably only has counter resets by power interruptions. However definitely this is a trade-off between ease-of-configuration vs robustness.

        • This. I have a full Unifi wireless network with Unifi POE switches but my main link/router is running Mikrotik. Works great.

          • @syngen: I have a love/hate relationship with Mikrotik - love it for my personal use but find it hard to recommend it to friends and families because of the steep configuration learning curve. Although admittedly it's still miles easier than a Cisco, no subscription fees and Winbox does make that initial configuration a tad bit easier to cope.

For most ppl pfSense seems to be a little bit more as the happy middle point in terms of robustness and configuration. Although the catch is having a dedicated x86 consumes too much power, and the prices Netgate devices makes them not economically attractive.

        • I've inadvertently just done this.

Chucked a 4 port EdgeX Router on the network and hooked up an Unifi LR AP in the centre of the house with plenty of coverage. Looks mint actually… like a smoke detector.

          • @Buckshot: +1

Centre location and having the AP high up is key to success!

My preference is to just leave the AP in the attic space above the plasterboard so that it's invisible. One less hole in the ceiling and never felt the need to actually look at the AP. I am curious - do you guys find it helpful to be able to see it physically?

            • @CoronavirusVaccine:

I am curious - do you guys find it helpful to be able to see it physically?

It's useful when troubleshooting to see what the AP is doing. Apart from that you don't really need to look at it.

              • @eug: Thanks @eug. That's an useful reference - I learnt something. Looks useful during initial set up.

            • @CoronavirusVaccine: So my initial plan was to have a mesh network in the roof with a couple of AP's across the house.

The guy that was doing my CCTV install persuaded me to go with a Unifi AP and mount it on the ceiling. It looks at home up there… you wouldn't know it was an AP if it wasn't for the flashing blue ring (which can be turned off).

My power injector and cabling all feed back to a comms rack in the garage which make it pretty easy to maintain.

For me, I'm happy you have it visible. On a white ceiling, it disappears into obscurity.

          • +1

@Buckshot: I've come across some people who leave their Unifi AP on the kitchen bench next to the router facing up and then complains the AP didn't work as well as they expected compared to the ISP-provided wifi-router…..

          • @Buckshot: The prosumer product marketing is really clever as they try to get the customers to pay more for routing, but really at least in Australia most people don't need a beefy router for home use. The little guys like Unifi EdgeX or Mikrotik hEX S has more routing than most people will ever need in the home, and also being more stable.

The wifi coverage situation is more complicated as most people will be better off to use multiple APs (with wired-backhaul preferably) but kept on splashing money on the next 'better' wifi-router which often doesn't address the root issue.

            • @CoronavirusVaccine: Correct.. coverage is a complicted issue.
I live in WA though so our walls by and large are all brick meaning none of the interference from metal frames.

After researching the Unifi AP in conjunction with an EdgeX 4 port router for NBN FTTP connectivity, it just made sense. All done for under $320.

              • @Buckshot: Some of my acquaintances in the steel industry advocates using steel framing for housing - I am curious how well that works for wifi. Granted the gaps between frames are fairly large but can't imagine if it actually makes wifi coverage problematic. Can anyone chime in?

Agree the cost of an AP+Router are actually reasonable compared to a standalone all-in-one - but for most people the barrier (cost/hassle) is to run the cables. It's money well spent and only have to do it once and would give good wifi experience for the duration of the tenancy.

                • +1

@CoronavirusVaccine: People in the steel industry recommending steel framing hehe…

Yea- look. It's fine based on my research. Some people
report a bit of degradation with steel frames but overall, I think it's okay.

      • @willoz - This! Unless you need the enterprise features, ASUS routers are the way to go. I don't see anyone buying a UDM these days for 802.11ac wireless. ASUS have Wi-Fi 6, mesh networking, 8 port or 2.5Gbe port options, and make sure before you buy that it is supported by Asuswrt-Merlin for rock solid firmware.

There is no manufacturer who will give you firmware updates on a monthly basis for a router that is more than 5 years old, but Asuswrt-Merlin does.

      • Weird i have everything on, on my 1000 line and never have an issue…. 15+ devices on the wireless and a unmanaged switch connecting another 5 devices. I think i've rebooted it once and it turned out not to be the dream machine but the wireless device itself.

    • +2

Since it's the flavour of the month:

Be aware of who's product range your investing in.

      • 2FA and password manager and dont use SSO login. These leaks and brenches is going happen, pretty much any large user base service.

        • +2

          Completely agree.

My issue with it is not that the breach occurred - as you said, breaches happen - but in Ubiquiti's handling of it.

          • Customers were not immediately notified
          • in their public statements, Ubiquiti tried to push blame onto a "third party" (AWS) who was not responsible for Ubiquiti's servers anyway. It's like me setting a weak password on my PC and trying to blame Microsoft for someone getting access

With some of Ubiquiti's gear (i.e. the UDM Pro, I believe; unless that's changed recently), you also don't have an option for only local login prior to setup - you have to setup using SSO.

        • +1

The problem is far complex than that. Based on the article, the hacker managed to get access to the cryptographic signing keys. In theory, this means that they could push out a malicious update to all the devices.

The response from Ubiquiti has been appalling. They first downplayed the incident and tried to blame it on a "3rd party" vendor. Their share price has taken a massive beating since this incident.

      • Thanks, very interesting. I’ve read that management is useless at Ubiquity. Personally I think it’s too risky to buy any of their gear, but I guess most listed companies would do the same in the face of a big time hack like this (deny, cover up, etc).
I’m an old school engineer, and it wonders me how/why routers need to be managed remotely. IoT is a horrible security risk, and in my house, routers just run all day and done ever need managed.

        • Nothing stopping you from using their hardware locally, you don't need to manage it remotely.

          • @samfisher5986: Except… Please note UDM and UDM Pro got cloud access permanently ON.

With USG routers cloud access was optional.

    • Very cheap, I'm still waiting on mine to arrive which I ordered for $412 last week

    • Came up as $368 for me (no eBay Plus subscription).
Ordered one though, been keeping an eye on eye for a while, so figured why not… decent price.

    • I bought this to have a bit of fun experimenting during lockdown , its not worth the hassle for me. I even had to create a new wifi network just to add my new Chromecast4k

Used this to solve issue that issue : https://help.ui.com/hc/en-us/articles/360001004034-UniFi-Bes…

One day my gaming performance dropped significantly and i am stuck on an old firmware that ubiquity advised me can only be fixed by SSH into the device and uploading the firmware.

It was cool to have a futuristic looking / feeling network but its not worth it for people who don't have the time to constantly be troubleshooting issues.

I wouldn't call this a stable solution at all - especially for gamers

      • I even had to create a new wifi network just to add my new Chromecast4k
Used this to solve issue that issue : https://help.ui.com/hc/en-us/articles/360001004034-UniFi-Bes…

That is just security best-practice (placing IoT devices on their own network). It should not be necessary if you simply want use a ChromeCast.

    • Can this do BT torrent, wireguard, selective vpn routing or adblock like Open -wrt ?

$444 the goodguys comercial if any one has access

    • I'll vouch for this machine…does a great job.

Just follow the instructions and make sure you put a little clean water through it after every use. Many of the complaints around this machine seem to be from people who don't maintain it, and it gets clogged up with gunk.

    • IF you have access to the Good Guys Commercial site, its $444.00

    • Excellent carpet shampooer but use warm water, not hot water, or you'll heat damage the plastic clean tank and then the valve won't be fully push down anymore. If you have one of those safety devices in your house that limits the max temp, hot water from the tap may possibly be fine (up to you), but we used it at a place where the tap hot water was scaldingly hot and it stuffed the tank (and heaps of places are out of stock of the replacement tank).

I should have bought one when I was a renter to save on end of lease costs.

      • weird DJ doesnt have click collect for this item i think, but ebay is cheaper anyway

    • one amazon review says:
it's a minimalistic design, and the best part I feel is the lid where you drink from, it is not fully open so the drink stays warm or cold even when the cap is off, and it is very easy to drink from because the drink won't come out in a large amount so it doesn't burn your lips.

is this the same product? the tumbler lid in this post need to be open completely, right? weird

      • The reviewer is likely referring to the plastic piece on top of the stainless base. This narrows the opening which reduces thermal loss.

But at the end of the day it's a pretty solid 1080p gaming rig when there are zero options out there, and I don't need to worry about going and buying an nvme drive, wifi and OS license (which to be fair is probably only $100 in total). Plus it'll arrive on Wednesday.

Okay units after you buy a few usb cables till you get one that actually works (Android) Anker cables seem best for me, mine totally failed after about 2 years (usb port failed, constant error 'usb device not supported', even with nothing attached)

Not sure if they did any revisions to fix this issue as the Sony support seems really poor.

      • +1

Agreed, I have the same issue with mine. Apple CarPlay seems to work fine but Android Auto is a nightmare (the Anker cables work most of the time but still fail occasionally).

Sony Support is non existent for this product in Australia, they outsourced it to some third party who didn't even respond when I contacted them about Android Auto not working on my unit.

Anyone considering this head unit should Google "Sony AX5000 problems" first… I wish I did before buying…

      • I've not had an issue but heard about issues.

Short quality USB C cables is what you're after.

    • I own this and works well with AAWireless too

    • The one from Bankstown is AX5500, any one have feedback on this model?

      • I have the AX-5000, from what i can tell it's largely the same.

The main upgrade (in its current form) is that the AX5500 does screen mirroring from smartphones. I think it may have different output options, but you'd be best to see what suits you best.

I personally feel that it's probably worth the extra $50 at this point, but i wouldn't upgrade if you have it already. Of the same token, I also can't see many people using the web link so it could be $50 wasted.

Overall both will be nice quality units and I'd recommend either based on pricing/needs.

Only other point to make is that I'd imagine that the AX-5500 will have support for updates/bug fixes for a slightly longer time as opposed to the AX5000.

$500 or so seems to be the going rate for AX5000s now since they're now old stock/clearance and they may be avaliable cheaper if you hold out.
