This is not a great camera, I think Canon are on their way to reduce pricing on this as it has been overpriced and has had bad reviews. I know a lot of photography mates who purchased this and decided to go back to their last gen MkD3.

Do some research in my opinion before forking out that hard earned money!

It's a decent camera, but it's not enough of a step up from the original 6D to warrant the extra expense.

    • 5D and 6D belong to two completely different leagues.
6d2 is not a wow camera but it is a solid performer.

  • If only they hadn't recycled that relic of a sensor from the turn of the century. Sadly even micro four thirds has surpassed it in image quality. Still capable of taking nice photos in the right hands of course. A decent option if image quality isn't a prime consideration.

    • Recycled sensor?

  • I always love how Kogan inflates the RRP. It’s $2,599 on canon.com.au and Jb Hi-Fi

  • How many of you still prefer DSLR over Mirrorless?

    • +2

I do. I know mirrorless is quite popular now and taking over SLR, I still prefer using DSLR for the following reasons:

      1. Battery life, I can run on just 1 battery, sometimes 2 in a day with my DSLR, can you do the same with mirrorless?
      2. The DSLR has tactile controls, settings aren't buried in a menu somewhere.
      3. This one may sound a bit strange, but I prefer to frame my shots in private, I don't like people looking over my shoulder and see what I'm taking, and no, I'm not a creepy perv :P
      4. All weight/size advantage with the mirrorless is lost when you use a decent lens.

But hey, each to their own.

      • +2

higher end mirrorless have same tactile controls as most DSLRs. Its just a matter of picking the right one. My Fuji X100F has nicer controls than my nikon d610.

Mirrorless can be even more "sneaky" where you can chimp in the EVF.

I'm guessing with all your comments you are prob thinking of sony A5000 type cameras which are more for your average joe.

        • Spot on. The manual controls on my Fujifilm X-T2 are the best I've ever used.

      • +4

I'm in sony land. Sounds like you'd actually like them if you got a chance to properly use them.

        1. Using a7r2's at a wedding I get 3000 shots at a wedding. a7r3 is supposedly double that (yes i know very pricey).

        2. Sony a7's are probably even more customisable button wise than a canon or nikon.

        3. You can turn the back screen off and look through the viewfinder just like a slr.

        4. But you have the option of going crazy light and small if you want. i.e. if i put a small lens on an a7r2 and take the battery grip off, it's freakin tiny, but i still get 42mp and huge DR/IQ in a tiny tiny package.

        • Thanks Gavin, you've provided some solid rebutles there.

I guess point 3 has a major effect on the results of point 1.

Sony would be the one I would look at if I were to switched to mirrorless, but I'm already heavily invested in Canon. ;)

        • @CityEnd:

Yeah, it was painful when i switched. I had a big canon rig as well.

You can use the canon glass with an adapter and it's ok, just not as good as native.

Cityend - I agree with you. My SLR offers both viewfinders and I only use the screen when taking video because you have to.

I also find with the optical “manual” viewfinder I can frame the shot with my right eye, while still looking at the surrounding scene with my left, so you get that whale broaching just behind your kids!

For me its an affordability thing.

The good glass is still cheaper for DSLRs where as Mirrorless glass for good stuff is $$$

Im hoping that nikon brings out a F mount mirrorless that is worthy for the switch.

Holly crap!, After reading Gavin's comment, I thought I'd look up prices for mirrorless lenses and almost fell off my chair.

    • DSLRs are still more suited for professional work and will be for sometime.

      • -2

Disagree - I use my Canon DSLR for family and happy snaps - big difference in the quality between that and my compact and my i-phone - especially in marginal conditions. The smartphone is great for taking spur of the moment shots, but they are all wide-angle. To zoom you are doing a digital zoom which reduces quality.

If you want to pick one face out of a crowd you need something better. And - if you want better lighting you need a bounce flash.

But, the old saying goes the best camera is the one you have with you and I acknowledge that carrying an SLR around is a pain in the neck.

        • What are you on about? I am talking about for professional work. You can use whatever you want for casual/hobby photography. Mirrorless is generally more popular for that as its smaller, cheaper and more accessible.

        • @Orpheus: dont think public21 read your comment in context

        • @Orpheus: Ah - thought you were saying that DSLRs were not suited for casual/hobby…. and only suited to professional work.

          Oops.

          Apologies.

Sadly if you want to shoot 4K video, you need to get the 5D Mark IV

    • I have the mkIII I have been so tempted to get the IV

  • Guys,

Kogan is an authorised retailer for Canon in Australia now.

    Check the list please

    https://www.canon.com.au/products/specials/back-to-school/au…

But make sure you register the product at:

    https://secure.canon.com.au/core/login?signin=42f23f823eeb11…

I recently bought the camera from Micheal's for $2165 as they are trusted retailers.

It's a nice camera. Initially had bad reviews as it doesn't have 4K video.

    Cheers
    Amuthan

  • Has been sub-$2k in past sales via Ted's eBay.

  • I just added a few Sony 7 cameras to this :
    http://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm#Canon%20EOS%20…
and all I can see is that they are all running very close to each other.
Definitely not far enough to justify changing an eco system.

4/3's are good but they do not perform too well from noise perspective when there is not enough light.

    • Yeah the low light thing is making me think I made a mistake getting 4/3s, I'm wondering if I should sell it all now for a full frame sony, before I'm too invested.

      • Depending on what you want to achieve.
        4/3s have their own advantages.

  • Best vlogging camera atm if you don’t mind the size or it only shoots up to 1080p 60fps
