I've been looking to replace my hot and power hungry 50w halogen downlights throughout my house. I'm not a fan of the SMD type downlights and frosted glass lens as they look cheap. Will replace instead with these COB style downlights. These are the cheapest I have seen. They also have different combinations of warm white colour, gimbal/fixed and metal finishes but more expensive. Other lighting stores seem to be selling for around $40 so I think $10 is cheap. Almost cheaper than a good quality Philips globe only. Cut out size of 75-93 mm should fit a lot of existing holes. Will be getting electrician to do my entire house next week. Installing outlet plugs so can change the lights in the future myself.

  • I actually bought warm white, fixed, anodised aluminium from them. $18 in store. Not sure what their website lists.

  • BEAM ANGLE: 50 degrees
Isn't so great (but at least they're honest unlike some), you'll notice dark patches/shadows, especially in kitchen & dinning rooms. So I'd suggest people get a few to try out before committing to the whole house.

    Are they 12v or 240v?

    • Yeah, good question. The description is a bit ambiguous ie "The ultimate project downlight to replace 50W MR16 systems" so does that mean it is a 12V MR16 or are they saying it's a 240V GU10 that's ideal for replacing MR16s?

      • Yes.

        I don't think they're either.

It's presumably a sealed unit that you replace the entire previous fixture with.

      specs

240v according to the specs, though that'd be the external driver.

    • It mentions “plug” and not “transformer”. Suggests 240v to me

    • 1m Flex & Plug, so 240V. Unplug old transformer if you have MR16 type, and plug this in. If you have GU10 then you’re up for some electrical mods to fit plug bases.

  • +1

They are not a replacement MR16(12V) or GU10 (240V) globe. They are an entire fixture and driver (transformer). You can't replace the globe if it fails. Here is a spec sheet link.

  • SMD type lights have a wider beam angle but the trade off is glare.

Good webpage to explain difference between. SMD and COB downlights.
