Was pretty keen till I saw the interest rate of 20%. Although the incetives are nice to boast the points.

$0 annual fee for AMEX is not very common, then again which "OzBargainer" would pay for interests? This has been discussed numerous times in previous credit card deals. :P

    • +4

Indeed. My credit card company could charge 50%pa and I wouldn't care as I never pay interest. Just keep shoveling the points and cash backs my way :-)

      • indeed i never check the interest rate of my ccs

  • the amex bluesky card has no annual fee and you get 1 amex pt for every dollar spent. which is what i've got.

    • +1

you probably applied during a promotion, bluesky has a $75 annual fee
      Source:
      https://www295.americanexpress.com/cards/npz.do?pmccode=82#C…

One could also argue FF points are worth more than AMEX points, until recently you could exchange 2 AMEX points for 1 FF point

      • oops that site is US, looksl ike blue sky isnt available in australia anymore

  • I've got a Qantas card with no annual fee from a while back, it's great. Gotten a few free flights with it so far.

  • BONUS: Apply for a Supplementary Card, be approved by 30 April 2011 and receive a $50 grocery Gift Card

Can't find the above $50 offer in the link or elsewhere. Is there an actual offer of this on the site?

    • I think this is offered by Amex, and you will see it when you click through the application.

      • Ta. It is under additional options on the application form.

        • Cant seem to find it under the additional options. Only Credit Protection Option.

      • Yes thats right in the additional card holder section

  • Just wanted to check - that this card

    a) has no annual fee, EVER
    b) has bonus QFF points
    c) earns 1 QFF pt per $1 spent?

  • +3

This is pretty good I reckon, with $0 annual fee any rewards program is welcome.

  • Good deal !!! However, I'm not eligible coz I already got a Qantas AMEX card.

  • It would be good if Amex got more establishments and outlets that would want to take their cards and not add-on a surcharge!

    • +1

how about actually taking AMEX cards in the first place!

    • That would only when AMEX stopped charging much higher rates than Visa/Mastercard to merchants.

      • That's right. With my business, when a customer whips out their AMEX a little part inside of me dies. Why should 2%+ of my revenue go to AMEX? When the invoice is $1000, that's at least a $20 cost I bear. I have just recently imposed a surcharge of what the bank charges me for each card as a disincentive. If the customer is willing to rake up points at my expense, then no thanks. I'm just an average Joe trying to make a living off my earnings.

        • fair enough, but customers go elsewhere unfortunately.

For instance on large purchases (electronics) i tend not to use JB Hifi because of their refusal to offer free amex.

        • -> Muzzamo

I've heard of others who discontinued their Amex's due to higher fees at shops etc.

          -> Slix_88
Not sure if this still applies but, maybe some of your customers could ring Amex, say that they liked to shop with you using their Amex but heard you are going to discontinue using Amex (so they'll have to use other methods of payment).

Then, if Amex is still running a program that was mentioned a while ago, you may get a call asking if you would like to have Amex process transactions with no charge to you.

Though, the last time I heard about this it was customers ringing up about shops which had actually discontinued taking Amex payments. (and so, some of the larger shops are/were processing Amex payments with no charge)

  • Could your first purchase within the first 3 months be $300 or more and fulfill both criteria, thus earning 7,500 points?

  • This post made me do some calculations to compare some credit cards out there. it appears DJ's amex card is a no brainer, especially for the first year for me. For my spending, I get $514 worth of woolies gift card and $100 DJ gift card with DJ's amex in the first year whereas I get $383 woolies gift card with the qantas amex. second year DJ's amex value decreases $128 because of the card's fee but I have the freedom to cancel it after 12 months.

  • How much is 10000 points worth?

    • typically 13500+ for $100 gift card, check it online.

    • depends what you do with it.

best value proposition is long haul flight.

64,000 points for one way to london, worth around 900-1000$

  • I would recommend instead getting the safeways qantas card for $89, giving the same qff reward, as not everyone takes amex and then you need another card anyway.

    • why instead? :P

If it's no fee ever and they're going to give you 10,000 points for joining now, join up for it as well and get those extra points.

  • I just applied for the Earth card from Westpac thus morning….

    • Applying doesn't mean you have to accept it when they give you a card :-P

  • If I have a earth mastercard from westpac (which includes an amex card), am I still eligible for the bonus points?

  • I would recommend you get both. Get this for the bonus points and get the safeway one for the bonus points as well and then cancel safeway one if you don't want to pay the yearly fee after the first year. This one is free, no brainer IMO.

    • dont forget applications for cc go on your credit rating but cancellations do not. Thus if you have too many apps you might find it difficult to apply for credit in the future (eg. mortgage or car loan).

  • Looking at

An additional 2,500 points will be awarded after the first Card spend on purchases of selected Qantas products and services in Australia.

Selected Qantas products and services are: (a) Qantas passenger flights (with a QF flight number) purchased on the Qantas merchant account i.e. with Qantas direct or some travel agents, (b) purchases from Qantas Travel shops or (c) purchases from Qantas Holidays (made before 01 June 2011 only). Excludes: Qantas Freight, Jetstar and Qantas branded non-airfare products operated by third parties e.g. Qantas Box Office.

If you don't plan to take any flights, it may be worth it to buy a gift voucher which you can either use at a later date or flog on EBAY (rarely see the vouchers there).

    • what is the cheapest thing you can buy at a Qantas travel shop? i wonder if you can buy a toy plane or something and would that qualify for the amex 2500 points?

      • Don't know what's in there, but 2500 points only worth about $20, so it might not worth it.

  • Problem with Amex is that the merchant fees are too damn high and not all shops accept them. :(

    • Most big retailers do.

  • the only good think about this one is the bonus points if you use qantas alot. otherwise the BMW American Express and BLue sky American Express offer better value both with no annual fees too.

    • +1

How is blue sky better value?

      • free insurance and you can cash in points now for gift cards .

For anyone interested. BMW American Express (http://www.bmw.com.au/faces/jGeneralContents.jsp?page=/BMW/c…)

      • Complimentary enrolment in either Membership Rewards Ascent1 or Qantas Direct2 – save $80 p.a.
      • Rewards points with no capping or expiry3
      • Up to 55 days interest free on purchases4

This offer is actually better than the offer currently posted. MOD you reckon the BMW offer deserves it own post?

      • update - see Neil's response as my response was erroneous

It's not as good in some scenarios.

If you only apply and get accepted:
        - QANTAS you should have 10,000 points
        - BMW you still have zero points.

If you spend $500 in the first 2 months on QANTAS "elligible purchases":
        - with QANTAS you should have 17,500 bonus reward points (join + first spend + spent over $300)
        - with BMW you would 10,000 bonus points

If you spend $500 in the first 2 months on QANTAS "elligible purchases" AND that included buying something from QANTAS:
        - with QANTAS you may have 20,000 bonus reward points (join + first spend + spent over $300 + spend on QANTAS)
        - with BMW you would 10,000 bonus points

In the long run, some of the extra BMW rewards may add up, if they apply to you.

You could post it as a separate deal :)

The BMW one sounds better for some

        • The QANTAS deal isn't 10K + 7.5K. It's 10K broken down into 2.5K, 5K, 2.5K.

Very similar deals although not sure whipping out my BMW gold AMEX when I'm trying to buy cheapo Ozbargain items is going to go over well.

        • Oops. My bad

        • +1

The way I understand it, qantas is 7500 bonus points for $300 spend in first 3 months, BMW is 10000 bonus if spend $500 in first 2 months. I have assumes no spend on qantas as I'm not booking any flights in the near future.

      • Since the BMW American Express is a Gold Card, does that mean you get free travel insurance?

        • no , only the blue sky card has free insurance and you have the option to cash in points now for gift cards too.

  • I've currently got an Amex Gold Ascent which also has no annual fee:

    https://www212.americanexpress.com/dsmlive/dsm/int/au/en/per…

Is it worth switching to the Qantas Discovery card?

    • I'm not sure that you have to switch …

You could have both, I suspect :) At least you get the points and can take your time deciding if you want to discontinue one.

I had the David Jones Amex at the same time as I had another Amex.

When I cancelled the David Jones (annual fee) I still had the other Amex to fall back on (fee free).

  • I applied for this last week and have had no acknowledgment of my application whatsoever. Not even an email. Did anyone else apply? If so, did you receive confirmation of your application?

    • +1

you are best to call them to follow up as they are probably swamped with new applications thanks to ozbargain site. my wife waited over a month before calling up and they informed her she needed to send in id and proof of income in the end it was rejected so it was a waste of time. The fact it says household income on amex application forms is wrong and not even considered it goes by actual applicants income needs to be 35k+ thats what they told me on the phone. btw what is the cheapest thing you can buy at a Qantas travel shop? if you get an extra $50 gift card if you apply for an additional card holder then this is a good deal. i wonder if you can buy a toy plane or something and would that qualify for the amex 2500 points?

  • Received my card this afternoon.

Applied last Saturday, so I would assume they are working hard to get peoples approved.

Does this card have a pin feature?

I don't feel like signing every time i make a purchase.

    =============
    Edit:

Called the customer service, Amex doesn't offer any cash advantage or PIN code at this stage.
I reckon it might be a little fall back about this offer.
