  • "Up to a maximum of 10,000 BONUS POINTS will be awarded per flybuys account" - i wonder does this mean the offer can be used multiple times (10)?

    Isnt 1000 points jus 5 bucks? And theres a $5 purchase fee…?

    • Yes. It only becomes useful if you're doing one or more of the following:

      • Transferring FlyBuys to Velocity (ideally during a 15% bonus promotion), and expect to get more than $5 of value from redeeming your points there
      • You have a card that earns bonus points at supermarkets, like the Amex Platinum Edge. This gets you an effective 3:1 earn rate on non-supermarket spending.

1000 points covers fee for $100 card. The $50 card would end up costing $2.50. Don't see any benefits here.

    • +1

      Thank you kindly.

Was about to pull the trigger on this and saw your comment.

  • 1000 point just cover the card cost. What is the point?

    • +3

well it is a "gift" card - the usual purpose is to gift it to someone, but pocketing the points for yourself.

    • +1

Point is to earn 105 Flybuys point?

      • -1

You don't normally earn Flybuys points on gift card purchases - so you would get the 1000 bonus points (which would cancel out the $5 card purchase fee), but not any Flybuys points for the transaction itself. Flybuys points are usually only awarded when you (or someone else) spends the money on the gift card.

I earn points for gift card purchase all the time. Just no bonus points

        • @citygal: I've just gone back and checked my last few purchases of gift cards (Coles Gift Mastercards, which I only buy when there's a decent bonus points offer on) and received the bonus points, but have definitely never received points for buying the cards themselves - or any other gift cards at Coles, regardless of type. Given that purchases of gift cards are usually excluded from Flybuys points earn (as well as from spend targets at Coles for Flybuys bonus points), it's unusual that you're receiving points when buying gift cards at Coles.

          @SimbaGirl:
That's quite strange, cause I always receive points for gift card purchases when there are 2000 points offer for Eftpos cards and Coles Mastercards purchases. My partner received his points in his own Flybuys account.

        • @SimbaGirl:

I had purchased a gift card under this offer and can confirm that 105 points was awarded.

        • @citygal: Thanks for the update - I won't be taking this offer up anyway (only having enough points on offer to cancel out the $5 purchase fee doesn't appeal) but will keep an eye on my Flybuys points next time I purchase one of these cards.

  • Like always coles gift card promos always far worse than woolies.

Thats why woolies gets all my business

    • +1

So that's why you shop at Woolies?

    • +1

But woollies points aren't worth as much for people interested in airmiles because you can only transfer them to qantas points - qantas points are ridiculous in how much it costs for a free flight in comparison to velocity. They don't even do 15-30% bonus transfer promos like flybuys do.

      • True, but the 5% discount at Woolies via eGift Cards is better than superior point earn rates.

  • +1

You can make/save $5 if you have access to discounted Coles gift card from the likes of Suncorp and then use that giftcard to purchase this Gift mastercard. Use the gift mastercard elsewhere and essentially save 5 bucks off your purchase.

    • Last time they refused to put the transaction through
Never have any quibble at woolies

      • for the mastercard giftcard? I've used the suncorp coles gift card to purchase a netflix card before without issues.

        • can't remember if it was visa or master card, tried to pay with egiftcard obtained through AGL

  • Only if i can pay for these with gift cards then there is a point to it :(

  • i guess net saving is 5 Flybuys points

    • 5 fly buys points are worth 2.5 c.

      • +1

Sorry, the net saving is 105 points, not 5 points.

Purchasing a $100 gift card gets you 1105 points (1000 bonus point + 105 points for the total purchase cost of $105 as usual). After 1000 points (equivalent to $5 which levels out the purchase fee), your net saving is 105 points

        • 52.5 c.

        • +1

          @wxyz234:

This is not a lot - I know that. But may be good for people if they are only short of a hundred points to reach enough points to redeem what they want.

        • +1

If you spend the $100 loaded on the giftcard at anywhere that takes flybuys, that's an extra 100 points (which I know isn't much at all but still adds to the total), bringing it to 1205 points.

  • For people who are saying this is worth nothing think of it this way. If you buy $1000 worth of giftcard then that gets you 20,000+1050=21050 flybuys points, use that with Amex Platinum Edge and you get an extra 3150 points. During Velocity bonus transfer those flybuy points gets you 10,525 Velocity points and 3150 from Amex. That is just short of 2125 points for a return flight to Sydney, Hobart or Launceston from Melbourne. To me that represents great value given return flights to Hobart is already $280pp and peak period would be ridiculously higher.

    • Up to a maximum of 10,000 BONUS POINTS will be awarded per flybuys account

      • Oop my maths is way off.

  • +1

what a pointless waste of time

Just bought a $100 card using e-gift cards. As this is a prepaid Mastercard, you can pretty much use it at any store which accepts a Mastercard. I think this is awesome!!

  • Working out well for me during the 15% bonus transfer offer for velocity points, bought this to do my shopping with (that i would of done anyway) and then transferred the points across. Sure it cost $5 but i got 105 flybuys points for buying the card, 100 flybuys points from using the card to buy groceries, and the 1000 bonus points.
I also combined this offer with the $50 teen gift card 2k bonus points netting me 3255 points.

It would of been better if it was 2k bonus points like it has been before, but I'll still take it :D

  • do these cards expire?, i couldn't find it on the website

    • 1 year i think
