Spend a day exploring all the sights of Beijing, including the 2008 Olympic Games sites

    which are mostly all abandoned

    • +17

      That's totally not true.

    • +10

Have you been? I went this year in Sept and the Olympic Park was a hive of activity, both tourists sightseeing and locals doing dance and skating classes.

    • +2

I went in March and as mentioned above, place was busy with tourists

  • +16

I would be very careful with this. Tours in china at this price sound like a disaster already. I remember my brother being forced to tip the bus driver for a short one day trip even though "everything" was included. If you are in the middle of nowhere you just don't have a choice.

Similarly, if it is similar to the "chinese tours" offered in Australia, even though the price is low the value for money is not really there.

    • +10

Are you saying the Chinese will rip you off at a moments notice?

      • +7

Having been there many times I would just be careful doing something like this.

      • +12

you can expect a lot of shopping tours, of course you wont buy anything if you are a real ozbargainer, but you still pay for it with your time

        • +1

But on the bright side apparently you get

          a life-enriching adventure.

      • +1

that surely doesnt sound like the Chinese culture

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMVjskBB4w0

    • -1

Does the description say ‘tipping included’ ?

      • +1

sure but from my experience that doesn't mean shit if you are in the middle of nowhere and the driver will not leave unless you give him a tip.

  • +11

Agree with Matt, just be careful with all these cheap china tour, you will have a lot unexpected out of pocket expenses regardless you willing to pay or not as you will be “forced” or “pressured” to pay, heard too many bad experience from friends and relatives around, watch out!

  • +2

Heard there were $100 for 1 week China shopping tour for Chinese background people with Australian passport, exclude flight ticket.

Probably the same with this, $777 for a week including flight ticket.

still exist now? Shopping tour means they take you to shops and try to make you spend $ there.

    • +4

Sounds very much like $99 tour, except this will (hopefully) have English tour guide.

We were not forced to spend money but the shops that you are taken to are isolated (in the middle of an industrial estate) and over priced. Guests on the tour were rewarded with nicer hotel rooms depending on how much they spent. What topped it off for us was the last day which was traditional Chinese medicine followed by a $2 shop configured like IKEA so you had to walk past everything.

If you are time rich then they can be okay, but if you are time poor, very bad value. You can string a few together and spend a month or more in China for better value on the airfares.

    • I did this with my GF - $99 - 7 days, nice 5 star hotels etc - tour was all in Chinese (except the tourguide had awesome English).

Half of it was shopping, half was sightseeing. Mostly trying to sell stuff to you the whole time. As the price increases, the amount of stuff they try to sell you decreases. Ha ha

  • +1

If this is on Groupon with 15% voucher code, I'm in!

    • Kind of looks like the $888 tour of China they have atm. Though the 15% coupon maxes out on $40.

There’s also a surcharge on quite a few months.

  • do u actually have to go on the tours or can u just stay at each place and do what u want ??

    • +16

If you are dead, they will still carry you onto the bus - each shop the bus stops, the shop pay the boss by heads.

    • +2

      You have to. Can't skip.

    • +2

Each night is typically in a new hotel, so you have to be on the bus by 8am and most nights dinner is before you arrive at the hotel. Long days.

      • +1

Sounds like one of those 1960's 'Carry on in Spain' films.

    • ahhh i see was wondering how it was enforced

      • Spend $777 to see how tough you are?

  • +9

    shopping + shopping + shopping + shopping + shopping + shopping + shopping + shopping + shopping + shopping + shopping + shopping ……

    • Ozbargainers' favourite

  • +24

8 day tour, meet your landlord while you're there!

    • Nah, Chinese people never rent houses they don't want them to get used and old.

      • -1

        I know :(
        I was being facetious.

$&+ a country that lets us property market get screwed up due to bad tax policies and letting foreigners buy.

        Hate our politicians.

        • AU is no longer a prison colony, you are free to leave anytime.

        • @Expon: based on current Gov policies that is actually my eventual goal, yes

  • +9

Nothing positive from those tours just taking you to shopping destinations. Thats how they make money hence the low price

  • +7

This is too cheap to be good, particularly when it includes the train between Shanghai to Beijing which costs ~$120 by memory.

My guess is you'll be funnelled in and out of overpriced (commission paying) jade shops multiple times a day.

  • +1

Just got back from there. Did a day tour to the great wall. One of the shops they stopped at was a tea place which sold tea at 6-7X what you could get at the airport.

  • +11

Wow - they don't even provide admission or guide for the forbidden city. It looks like they pay for admission to the great wall only (hike up, extra for cable car).

Misleading & deceptive. Silk shop, jade shop, etc.

    • +1

Wow, this is just plain information. Are all the neggers sock puppets for the company/China?

    • what you expect all those costs included for this low price?

  • +2

Hmm, I think the eight days for four cities are too busy to enjoy. All the four cities are very large. Every city is worth eight day.

    • +1

true, I certainly agree with you but at the same time each city is worth eight weeks. seriously, you can't do it all.

      $777 is a tasting plate.

I lived in Japan for 4 years and feel like I barely did any travel there. I feel like I've done more travel during the last 2 2-week trips where I actually traveled around. but even then no way is it enough.

But I did in depth experience during the 4 years (hanging out with neighbours, watching local sports teams, knowing each crack in the road on the street I lived, etc) , and shallow experience (kyoto has temples, etc) during the 2 x 2week trips.

    • I think it’s enough time if there are no shopping tours. Suzhou, Hangzhou and Shanghai are so close to each other. 1.5 to 2hrs by high speed train.

Shanghai is one of my fav cities. Suzhou and Hangzhou are beautiful. Add in a night in a watertown. I would never do one of these tours because tourist attractions are crazy.l busy with bus loads of ppl. If u go on your own you can try your best to avoid the tour buses.

Don’t fit in too many touristy attractions. Chinese tours think more attactions = value for money but they jam pack so much into a day, spend a lot of time travelling and lil time at each place. In Shanghai go cafe hopping, ppl watching, just chill and relax and you will be able to appreciate how awesome it is.

I totally fell in love with China and can’t wait to go back. So much history.

  • +2

Just curious, would there be anyone that seriously think a 777 aud, 8 day tour could be a bargain without any tricks.

  • +10

have joined such tour before.there will be jade/pearl/silk/teapot/ruby /health shops. Each day will vist 2 places ~2 hours each and 2 shops ~1.5 hours each. A pcs of jade /pearl necklace costs you from AUD 20- AUD1000. Definitely don't purchase the "famous"teapot or anything looks like ruby.A silk quilt costs from AUD 100-AUD 300. Quilt cover is more expensive. But some Chinese purchase the silk quilt. They claim that it is very comfortable. Always in a hurry for sight seeing, exclude the time for flights, only 5/6 days left for the tour. one city to another city takes 4-6 hours.hotel is fine,no luxury food, simple Chinese food. Tips is ~ AUD150/200.special visit/ drama/play costs~AUD80-200.the costing of the tour all depends on the commission of your purchase. My friend is very happy with the tour as AUD1000 is what he can afford.

    • Thanks for sharing your exp ti6331 (:

    • can tell you're chinese from your english :D this guy's the real deal!

    • As posted below, my experience was pretty close to this. One difference was that ours didn't include extra entry fees to places, or costs for the plays/dramas etc., even though we did do them. Guess we got lucky.

Did a tour not dissimilar to this one about 5 years back with my wife (of Chinese heritage), and a busload of Chinese tourists from Canada, USA, & Australia. Cost her $90 and me $190 (non Chinese excess included, no joke) for 7 nights and all meals, not flights though. Hotels were 4 or 5 star (Chinese standards, but still quite nice), and meals ranged from serviceable to decent. Tour was in Cantonese, which gave my wife a bit of translation work as we went, but only when there was something worth sharing. The guides tended to speak a little English as well, and occasionally sought to include me as best they could. Ridiculously cheap, but as has been mentioned above, daily tip fee was expected ($10pp per day, extra $70pp total). Still very cheap with tips included.

As people above have alluded to, there will likely be several shopping stops along the way (jade, silk, gold, tea, to name a few), and they certainly attempt to pressure you into buying. We were the only ones who didn't buy up big from our tour group; in fact, we didn't buy anything, so resisting the pressure is possible. It was actually quite amusing the things they said to try to make sales, and also how gullible many people can be.

All in all, for the price it was definitely worth it, there were a reasonable amount of sightseeing stops as well as the shopping ones, there was enough time for the odd bit of unguided wandering, and there were no other hidden fees beyond the tips.

    • +2

Thanks for sharing your exp, NickVeronw (:

      • My pleasure! :)

    • Can vouch for this exact review, as this was our same-shared experience with these shopping tours.
The price to activities ratio are on point, but the value is subjective. To me, I thought it was good value, despite the 2-3 hour 'layover' in the stores. But just bring a tablet to catch up on shows while everyone else is trying to get out of way of sales assistants!

All the accommodation listed in this deal are quite far from their city centres, but no one's stopping you from jumping into a 'Chinese Uber' (Didi Chuxing) for true after-hours exploration. Of course, this is at your own expense, and you can't just wander away from the tour group during the day, because that's a breach of contract and they will fine you.

  • +1

    Who ever goes on this
Hopefully Can tell us if it’s worth it :)
    For next time

  • +1

No way, I would spend these Money in Shanghai in One day, if it's enough I would be very lucky! So many good places to visit and they are not cheap at all!

    • Yeah especially a central hotel in Shanghai with The Bund view! part of the experience. We stayed at Les Suites. Amazing service, even offered to help us bypass the security to get FB lol Even the bath tub had a view of The Bund. Great location.

      • +1

Exactly, I don't know why people always complain everything all the time when they buy cheap stuff and products, you only can see and experience what you can afford, you get what you pay for. It's that simple.

  • +5

FROM AN EXPERT THAT HAS DONE THIS TOUR TWICE!!!!! - This is NOT good value
    Why?

    1. Scoopon use Chinese airlines that are NOT direct flights and take forever to get there
    2. The hotels look OK but are in way-out places
    3. If you read the fine print you will find that most of the tours are optional so ends up costing your TWICE as much!
    4. Scoopon do NOT manage the tour or book the flights

    Recommend the Trip-a-deal China tour instead - 2 for $2000 ($1000ea)
    1. Tripadel use qantas direct flights
    2. Tripadeal use 4 star hotels in convenient locations
    3. Most of the tours (though not all) are included in price.
    4. Tipadeal do manage the entire tour and book the flights

    • +2

Why did you do it twice?

    • +2

      If you are a expert

Why did you have to go twice to learn your lesson?

      Just saying….

  • Wow price, airlines and hotel wouldn't bother me drastically.
I am not sold on the destinations though Beijing and Shanghai definitely, but I think there are so many awesome places to visit in China that Hangzhou, Suzhou wouldn't be pick 3 or 4. Up to the individual ofcourse.
