how long before people forget about seagategate

      Agreed. Very very unreliable brand.

    • Probably not anytime soon. I think they're getting worse.

Keep in mind, reliability is the primary performance factor for a backup drive:

      • My 2015 Seagate 3tb desktop drives all failed in 12 months
      • My 2017 Seagate 5tb backup drive failed in 12 days
      • Odd, I have a 4tb media server going strong on 3 years now. and 1 tb drive going fine at 5 years. and an old 250gb that would have to be 8-9 years now and still works fine

Almost a waste of time putting Seagate deals on Ozbargain lol I dont think I could risk being part of the percentage either.

    • Nothing wrong with putting seagate up when it's a good deal like this one here from a couple of days ago- https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/356098

I think the issue is reliability.
I'm in the market for a HDD for media, and based on the comments it's better to buy WD instead.

        • Yes reliability is the issue here. I bought 2 of these and had to return both as they stopped working. Maybe it's my bad luck or maybe not.

Many sheep here so I'm sure people will pull the trigger

  • $169 at officework local stock local warranty. https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/seagate-4t…

    • Yours is 4Tb at a higher price.

to be fair OP initially had 4tb in title
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/356575/revisions/716681/vi…

        • Comparing the 4Tb from the OP and Officeworks, OP is cheaper.

        • for extra $20 you get local stock, local service and local warranty for 3 years. or couple weeks waiting from US and pay for the postage when something goes wrong. If you are in business you also can claim your GST back.

          @Unity55:

Just to clear up your concern, I have recently have to go through warranty for a backup plus 4TB drive I got from Amazon(US). Punched in the serial on the Seagate(edit) website and was surprised that it was recognised. Requested an RMA and have to sent the drive to NSW, got a new drive back within the week.

I am surprised and impressed so warranty will not be a reason stopping me from buying seagate drives overseas for a cheaper price in the future. Not saying that their quality is anything to write home about, based on my experience (and others, I guess) with them at work. I'll get them if it's cheap, since my data are being backed up anyway.

PS. Not sure if WD works the same or not, warranty wise.

        • @patpoh: good to know that, thanks

For WD, you need to ship the hdd back to Vietnam for replacement.

        • @O O:

Oh boo. That's annoying. Thanks for the info though :-)

  • Is the drive inside SATA or directly interfaced with usb3.0 as WD often likes to do?

An amazing deal if it's possible to use this as a sata drive internally.

    • seagate drives usually have the sata interface unlike WD yes

    This has been $119 USD since - Dec 10, 2017 12:29 AM $119.00

Not really a deal, i'd be waiting a couple of days as it will probably drop back

    That seems crazy cheap.
What actual hard disk is inside the caddy? I could make my NAS much quieter with 2.5" drives.
