Lenovo ThinkPad 13 (128GB SSD, Celeron Processor) $399 + Postage (from $9.99) @ JB Hi-Fi

210

A "Red Hot Deal" from JB, only available for delivery (starting at $9.99).

Seems a decent price for a well known brand with SSD even though the processor might be underpowered and the screen being <FHD.

Believe that it is the first gen of the Thinkpad 13's (Lenovo have the second gen out at the moment but they start at $1,199 - admittedly with an i5 processor, FHD screen and 256gb hard drive).

Specifications
13.3" HD Anti-Glare Display (1366 x 768)
Intel Celeron Processor 3855U, Dual core Skylake Architecture @ 1.6ghz 15w configuration
128GB SSD Storage
4GB DDR4 RAM

its not exactly an apples to apples comparison but the ozbb favourite, the Dell Inspiron 11 3000 for as low as $300 seems like a better deal than this

that celeron is a dual core 1.6 - and that's it - no turbo

the Dell has a quad that can burst to 2.6 - the 11 will run rings around this.

Yeah, the N3710 is Braswell and the 3855U is Skylake.

I would put money on the 3855U being faster. The burst speed of the N3710 is probably only available on mains power too.

The other thing to keep in mind is the Spectre patch is likely to impact Braswell the worst out of all the CPUs that intel say need the patch.

I'd go the Lenovo even though the Dell $100 cheaper at the moment https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/355130

the pentium 3825U is marginally faster than the N3710 in synthetic benchmarks. real work use prob not noticeably different.

N3710 seems to offer a bit higher performance per watt so might offer better battery life.

both offer a decent leel of performance for web browsing and watching videos (not sure if they'd cope with HEVC encoded videos though)

I agree with drew442's comments, and would also like to point out that the Dell doesn't have a full-sized keyboard either.

Unless I was on an extreme budget I'd buy the ThinkPad.

  • Hmm … cheap but if the resolution can go higher that would be great ..

  • Thanks and I have purchased. Would be a good upgrade for my x240, which is still doing very well!

Yes the processing power and resolution are not top notch, but I dare say they fit almost all everyday needs.

  • This deal isn't as good as the previous Thinkpad X260 deal. Alright for those with basic needs but its unlikely they'll restock the X260's ever again as that's discontinued and JB simply bought the excess inventory from Lenovo. Possible that this is a one-off deal too.

  • Hey guys, I am looking for a laptop for my son for highschool. Would this be good enough? my budget is around $500 can stretch a bit more if it's a super good deal.

    Thank you

  • what about this one? Maybe 11.6" is too small.

That's worse value than the Lenovo. At the current time, this Lenovo is probably the best basic laptop deal that's currently active.

If your student is in year 10 or above, it might be worthwhile considering to buy a laptop that can last all the way till Year 12 or even the first year of university. A budget of $1k should cover that sufficiently and a suitable laptop for that would be a Lenovo E480, which is $874

its a 2 in 1 and obviously HN tax

you can get the Dell Inspiron 11 2 in 1 for $500 on ebay minus 20%

        don't be ridiculous…

provided you don't need a 4k video editing workstation or similar you can do school and uni work on 10 year old hardware EASILY. This ThinkPad would more than cover anyone's needs.

  • He's starting year 7. Is the E480 suitable? Maybe the $399 and upgrade RAM to 8G?

    • +1

Yeah. This is not bad pick, it's significantly better than the Dell Inspiron 11 3000 for $319 deal that gets posted everytime.

Performance isn't crash hot, I looked at benchmarks and it seems to be just as slow as a desktop based Core 2 Duo E8500. However that's fast enough for office applications and other basic stuff.

just buy this ThinkPad. Its more than adequate and will be for a long time.

there's no more reason to buy a more expensive machine than there is to buy him a Mont Blanc fountain pen instead of a BIC ball point. Having said that its your money of course.
