Well done. You got lucky there. Only Gold for $355 and 2hrs driving return for my nearest store for that too.

    • Hi Nmk
      Which store was this From?

      • vic park, WA

  • +1

there should still be a few at chatswood (sydney) if anyone wants it

  • +2

In WA I just bought one from Morley store and they had another one that was not sealed. I'm pretty sure the Malaga store also has one or two.

    • The other one was either a customer return which was put back on the shelf or an ex demo stock.

  • +1

one more thing - the I cant seem to find the VIP program anymore on their website…only an old post on their FB so not sure if this is still offered? (as I recall that was just for pre-launch??)

    • +1

      http://www.ztemobiles.com.au/feature_AXON7.htm

Click the accessories tab and scroll down. Yeah, they should have made it more evident but I guess at the price point maybe they don't want to be replacing/fixing all these Axon 7s

  • +1

Interesting.. This vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 vs Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus vs (yet to be released) Xiaomi Redmi Note 5?

    Mainly thinking of processor

I'd imagine there's no way the battery life of this would be better than the 4000ish mAh of the 2 already released Xiaomis with the efficient Snapdragon 625.

    edit: Whoa this has USB-C!

edit 2: and NFC. I would presume Band 28 too given that it's AU Stock.

    • +2

the zte also have band 28 for telstra and optus users …. my sons redmi note 4 lost coverage while on holidays my lg didn’t ….. band 28 support.

    • +3

I'd say this. NFC, USB-C, stock android, fast charging and 2 year warranty is worth it.

      • +1

yeah deals like this lessen the need to buy chinadroids to get a full feature phone for under $400.

  • +2

    HA! reminded me this deal.
It is still my current phone :)
As I dont play game so it is fine, install a custom rom can get it more updates.

    • Haha, tried to get that but missed out as they would not sell to me outright or not even post paid month to month.

Happy with a Moto G5 Plus now though :-)

  • +2

    Thanks op!!

Got one in Keswick SA. I believe there was one left in store. This was about 830 tonight.

    • 830

What do you mean by this ?

      • +1

        8:30pm..?

        • +1

          Yeah 8:30pm sorry

        • +1

@lawrst: I think it was pretty obvious because you said "830 tonight" lol

  • +2

It's marked as a clearance product in store. Put the ticket out myself this morning. Even if it says limited stock, that often means there's one or two odd lying around. Definitely worth calling ahead though and be patient because it's back to school period so there's a good chance there mightn't be anyone available to answer the phone during peak hours.

    • +2

Any policy if you purchase a gold unit for $355 and they too are discounted within a week or two to $299? Will Officeworks refund the difference?

      • Nope, unless you use your CC with Price Protection !!

        • I have purchased mine for $355 tonight too. I called the store earlier to check if they had stock and they said no. But I already got an email an hour after purchasing saying its ready for collection at the very same store. Is there any chance of them refunding the difference tomorrow when I go to pick up OzSikh?

        • @stephd: was that a Gold or Gray color?

      • Within a week maybe? Probably not two weeks. Returns are generally authorized by a manager so it'll vary from store to store.

        • So you can get the difference back within a week of purchase?

        • @goldiep: It's not a set rule. It depends on the management really. No harm in asking? I know it's been done before.

  • +2

It's a good phone, but You will only use it for a year and a bit, since it has biggest flaws/defect with the camera. It happened to my AXON 7!
flaw 1) Dust can get into the camera lens which makes your photo really wash out!
flaw 2) Camera defect! There're visible black dots in the photos after using it for a year. I though they must be the dust building up on the lens. But it's not, I opened the phone, cleaned out all the dust and the dots are still there!!!
Google "Dust in the camera lens Axon 7", you will find some people complain about it.
I will not recommend this phone due to these flaws!

    • that's actually quite worrying :/

    • +1

Me too. Had issues with my camera from 6 months in. And now in for repair. Selling the return as I already purchased the LG V30+. Bar the lack of front speakers it is a far superior phone.

If you are not fazed about the camera and cheaper and UI from ZTE, its a decent starter phone. Not worth the $699 I originaly paid.

      • That camera issue is a pain, but only happens with me when taking videos or pictures up close in auto focus. I have seen in a number of reviews, it has the best sound/speakers of any phone. It's a good phone with a major fault, still as I said you can use the front camera instead.

    • +2

Another flaw is no backlight on the Capacittive "Back,Home,MultiApp" buttons at the bottom and they are placed too closed so that makes almost impossible to use phone in the dark as you will end up pressing home instead of back 7 out of 10 times.

  • +3

On a side note, this phone is "officially" supported by Lineage OS, if you would rather load (near) stock Android onto it…

    https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/axon7

As long as the support continues, this phone will get Android O, P, Q, etc…

    • +1

Definitely worth it though I only spent a couple of hours with whatever it came with, having stock android and latest security updates is a must.

  • This VIP ACP cover is only for devices sold by ZTE (Australia) in the initial On-Line sale period or sold via our Channel partners (JB Hi-Fi). We can and will identify your device as being one of our Australian variants due to it's IMEI numbers etc and only valid devices will be supported.

    Doesn't seem to be eligible

    • Ok that was outdated

This VIP ACP cover is only for devices sold by ZTE (Australia) in the initial On-Line sale period or sold via our Channel partners (JB Hi-Fi and now Officeworks). We can and will identify your device as being one of our Australian variants due to it's IMEI numbers etc and only valid devices will be supported.

Should be valid, good if someone can confirm.

  • Officeworks website states $355?

    • +2

The gold variant is $355, grey is $299 as indicated in the link.

  • +3

No stock at any Melbourne CBD stores. Picked one up from Richmond. Just a couple left there.

    Thanks OP!

  • Eyeing this as a gift for someone, but do I buy a pen with it to make it over $300 to be able to claim TRS, if I take both with me when I go overseas?

    • +2

That will work. You can even use multiple receipts as longs as total from the same business is more than $300

      • +1

Thanks Was lucky to pick up one from Stuart Park Store. Last piece. They're also sold out on the $99 2TB MyCloud.

  • +1

You will be hard pressed to find any stock though. Even at $355 a month ago, OW in WA hardly had any stock.

  • Just snagged one! Thanks!

  • +7

Still about 5 items available at chadstone. The they offered me gold for $350. I said I wanted grey and they charged me …. $200. No idea how this happened.

    • $200 instead of $299?

      • +1

Yeah. Was gonna go for it at $355. No brainer at $200.

        • could you please post a receipt for us? thanks a lot

        • @homersyd:

          Lol yeah $200 receipt pls!

        • chadstone Vic store?

any stock left for grey ones?

    • They just told me they only have gold left for $355. Damn.

    • you from whirlpool?

    • Show us the Receipt or it didn’t happen ?

What do you want the receipt for? I doubt theres stock left now…

        • -1

Damn. if i go back to officeworks, will they refund me the difference

        • @easternculture:

          Try and let me know!

        • +3

          nice!

however even at $299 nobody should feel ripped off, but $200 is literally oustanding for a device with this spec,

Most Galaxy S5 with a SD 801 in them sell for around $200 refurb/2nd hand, yet you got a SD820 flagship device brand new iwth warranty and $300 VIP care.

the only letdown Ive found with this phone so far is the camera, and thats just being real picky - comparing it agaisnt my S7

        • @irev1:
Yeah. My thoyghts exactly. But the camera is really bad. Good for still photos. Hopeless with kids.

        • @Oneiricer:

did you update the firmware? according to SifuDean who's the ZTE rep on WP

          1) Camera - night shots / low light - Update the firmware and it is much improved. Most of the reviews are from the Marshmallow days and getting reviews re-done with Nougat is difficult. Also there are plenty of USA reviews but that is their firmware and hardware builds and not our model. We listened tot he feedback globally and R&D worked on it.

tbh I don't think you'll see much improvement though.

        • Thanks mate, I showed your receipt in store & got it for $200.

          https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/128852/55614/f4608a72-…

        • +3

          @OzSikh:
Wow awesome. Gonna need you to buy an extra case for me sice ive saved you $99. Lol!

        • @CVonC: mine was. Up to date. Didn't have to do anything. Android 6.0.1 the latest?

        • +1

          @CVonC:

Nope - android 7.1 available via update from their website.

  • Limited stock means they have under 5 items left in the store.
I picked up one for ~$284 priced matched www.phonebot.com.au @ $299 earlier this week. Would be funny if this triggered the price drop as it was $355 at the time.

EDIT: Looks like phonebot has put their prices up to $308, strange.

    • +2

And it's for out of stock pre-owned too.

      • +1

Wasn't like that the other day when I did the price match otherwise OW would have been all over it denying the price match.

  • +3

sweet just picked one up… that comment about "AXON 7 VIP Complimentary Accidental Cover Package - AUD$300.00 value… "

        Thanks!!

        • -2

i bought it for this reason.

  • got one at higgett store today , was grey, so i can rid of my 11 year olds redmi note 4 and give him band 28 ….. the complaints when were on holidays in regional victoria drove me nuts as he had to tether off my phone …… the redmi not 4 must be worth something on ebay.

  • +2

got the last one at Underwood QLD, pretty awesome phone and comes in really nice high end box and packing. Even had free plastic transparent cover.

    • +1

Even had free plastic transparent cover.

Yeah the shrink wrap on the box was a nice touch.

      • +1

well actually i was referring more to the transparent gel cover they provided in the box but hey shrink wrap was a nice touch too. Still got mine on as i only cut the front and sides and left the back on so i can still sorta use it as a hinge to flip to cover open and close on the box. LOL…

        • I knew, I was being facetious 😆

Nice work on keeping the shrink wrap in fact though. How asiann of you ^^

        • @CVonC: i was just lucky i guess, i half expected shrink wrap to just tear into pieces. Normally I like to tear the shrink wrap off and remove all plastic coverings on all surfaces(i have removed the annoying sticker at the back with the two IMEI numbers.) I also dont use a screen protector on my phones that have corning gorilla glass screens.

Anyways the box has now been chucked into a corner of storage cupboard with receipt in it.

I had one of these with linage OS 14.1 and rooted It was great.

Until around two weeks ago I accidentally dropped it in water, the bottom third was in there for like 10 seconds and I turned it off immediately..

Left it for at least 8 hours after wiping it down and a combination of leaving it in rice and in the sun..

It worked intermittently.. But eventually died.
The first phone I've actually ever killed due to negligence. They either "wear out", get too old for being useful or get sold/handed down.

My dilemma is that this is really cheap, i know what I'm doing with Linage OS and I have converted to USB C for almost everything now. Any other contending phones either don't have front facing speakers, don't have USB C or are $700+

Ive still gotta think about it.. Currently using an iPhone..

    • Got a couple of questions for you which I hope you're willing to answer..

      • Was it difficult to root and was it still getting updates?
      • Did you consider the placement of the buttons on the front (proximity relative to each other and lack of backlight) to be an issue?
      • Did you find quick charge worked well?
      • How long did you use the phone for?
      • Did you experience any eventual/gradual camera issues (some of which have been mentioned here) in regards to dust/black dots appearing in camera mode (after a while)?
      • Did your battery deteriorate over time such that it wouldn't even last a day?

      Thanks :)

      • +1

havent rooted mine yet but seems there is a tool to unlock bootloader for ZTE without the usual process of requesting a code from manufacturer.

This is then followed by flashing a new ROM of your choice and if needed root it after that. Some ROMs already come prerooted.

ZTE is also collaborating with the Lineage OS guys for the new Oreo update coming for the Axon 7, so you will have a choice of stock android 8(zte is ditching mui or a rooted lineageOS 15.
        https://www.xda-developers.com/zte-axon-7-lineageos-15/

There are some rooting toolkits available on XDA for easy rooting as well.

So far the AMOLED screen is super crisp and bright even in Brisbane sunlight its 36degrees out today. Quick charge with my 2.4A charger is pretty fast. Much better phone compared to my wife's Moto G5 Plus. Speakers are probably as good as it gets on mobile phones.

Depending on use, all lithium batteries deteriorate over time. Proper use and charging should see it last at least 1 to 2 years without too much loss of charge. After 2 years to 3 years you will be looking at some loss of charge or even a big loss like >50% and needs replacement.(thats about how long the warranty lasts too :D) Even if left on shelf with optimal 60% charge, lithium ion batteries will deteriorate and may not be usable by 3 years. My phone started up with a charge of only 30%, i am expecting perhaps only 1.5years use with my type of light usage.

Probably pick up another bargain from OW next year and sell this phone off.

    • Insurance doesn’t apply to you?

      • Ah, water exclusion

  • +1

Picked one up at Fitzroy today. On their website, Fitzroy had no stock so went to Elizabeth St who had limited stock. Got there a couple hours too late as they sold them however it appears in-store they have an ability to see actual stock numbers. A bunch left in Richmond and 2 in Fitzroy (well 1 now).

    Thanks OP.

    • How much did they charge you ?? $299 or $200 like this guy

      https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/36724/55596/1515840384…

      • $299. Not surprised. I also picked up iTunes gift cards and they screwed up entering in the price override (in their favour) to match Myer's iTunes deal a couple times until they got it right.

      • -4

do you know if they will refund me the price difference

        thanks

        • it's a price override mate. of course not.

        • I wanna know too, as I bought one myself yesterday, still sealed. Will give them a call tomorrow to see what they can do about it !!

I doubt that guy got sold an open box for $200

        • @CVonC: bit why would they do it ? One respon, may be it was an opened box/return from another customer.

        • @OzSikh:

Will give them a call tomorrow to see what they can do about it !!

          How did you go?

        • @CVonC: yes, returned the one which I bought it for $299 (it was still sealed), then bought again for $200. Here is the receipt

        • +1

Got it for $200, returned (it was still sealed) & re-bought it showing the receipt from Chadstone store

          Good work

Going to do the same tomorrow

        • @OzSikh:

Awesome. Did you go back to the same store?

        • +1

          @CVonC: yes

  • Does anyone use a music app that forces utilisation of the AK4990 DAC other than the stock music player? I don't know why they even bothered to include the stock DAC chips in the first place.

  • I am thinking of either getting the gold ZTE Axon 7 for $355 or the Motorola G5S Plus for $399. Which is better?

    • +1

      Axon 7

    • +1

Yep Axon 7 Gold definitely, with the older but faster processor, better camera, fantastic speakers and cheaper too. Maybe wait a month or so they might clear it out for $300 or less.

      • Is the camera really better on the Axon 7 than the Moto G5S Plus?

Might take better shots now in good lighting in some cases, but maybe not in 6-12 months time for dust getting in and that weird black

dots thingy mentioned by earlier comments above. Admit this is a great phone for $299 or even $355 with many specs beating the

Moto G5S Plus, but in the long run the camera might not be reliable.
