  • Includes stopover in Singapore — not as easy with kids :_(

    • +8

      But aren't there lots of things you can do at Changi airport, even for kids? Unless you've never been there

        • +19

          I found Japan to be fantastic for kids.

        • +4

          @pupkin:

          Ridiculously operated metro???

          We've been twice with our son who was 1 and 2 respectively. Prams can be a bit tough, but most stations will have a lift. Depending on when you go crowds aren't too bad. Biggest issue we found was a lack of high chairs in restaurants. On the whole we found plenty of things to do to keep him busy for a week in Tokyo.

        • @pupkin: colleague said the same things ("Tokyo in particular to be awful for kids" and "Hard to get around with prams, lots of people"). but it is a massive city and heaps of people… so i'd assume it's the same as other big cities (london? ny? shanghai?)

        • @justin_tsoi: only thing i can think of is perhaps less disabled/pram access outside of train stations, major attractions etc.

        • Japan is ok for kids as long as walking age. With a pram could definitely be a hassle in sone parts of Tokyo and Osaka. Depending what you what to do of course. Heading out to Kyoto, Nara etc be great.

        • @pupkin: in that case you might want to avoid Hong Kong as well based on the things listed.

        • @pupkin: agreed with sky tree as i read it’s a bit of a tourist trap..ridiculously operated metro tho???? U cray for saying that..being on time is like one of the biggest things in Japan…

        • +1

          @takezo:

          Next time you go. Pack one of these https://www.babybunting.com.au/minimonkey-mini-chair-grey.ht…

          Its a portable highchair essentially, its always in our nappy bag. Life saver in japan

        • @phocus:

          Hey @phocus,

          Thanks for the link. First trip we actually did take a portable booster seat along with us, but it was a bit hit or miss how it attached, and little one kept slouching in it.

          He should be 3 by next trip so only issue will be keeping him in the seat!

        • -2

          @sauce2k:
          By ridiculously operated metro I ment several operators, running different lines with different fares and tickets. Those lines go to different areas, somtimes sharing same stations, sometimes going parrallel to each other.

          "being on time is like one of the biggest things in Japan"
          What's so special about it? Comparing on the same scale, I've travelled by MRT in Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, so in St Petersburg & Moscow. Those metro systems were on time, and, so you can fathom, some MRT do not have timetables - the trains just arrive every 2-5 minutes.

          Giving how much hype and buzz Tokyo has created around itself, overall it's not as tourist welcoming city, which starts right from Narita aiport with non-working air-conditioning.

        • +1

          @pupkin:

          running different lines with different fares and tickets

          This is an easy one to solve: Get a "Suica" or "Passmo", charge it up, and forget about purchasing individual fares and tickets.

        • -5

          @Marty131:
          We came to Tokyo for a holiday, not to solve riddles. Never ever had such unexpected experience in other cities.

        • +3

          @pupkin: If u don’t know about suica or passmo, u didn’t do enough research before going to a foreign country…buying the right tickets is not solving a riddle. Anyway do still agree with having a pram isn’t ideal in Japan due to the population.

        • -1

          @sauce2k:
          Just as I said we never had such experience in other cities. Even in Beijing, of which we had heard lots of negative before traveling there, was way easier to get around without any research beforehand.

          Our friends visited Tokyo just two weeks after us and I doubt they will want to visit it again - it's just not a tourist friendly city.

        • +1

          @pupkin:

          Most absurd things from your posts. Just showing how lazy you are. Stick to trips like Bali, Thailand.

        • +1

          @pupkin:

          I'm sorry that you found Japan is awful but I found Japan is kids friendly and I would visit again. You can find non pram friendly places in any country.
          Japanese trains and ticketing systems are way advanced compare to Australia.
          There are much better places to visit in Tokyo than skytree.

        • @Marty131: i found it annoying that we couldn't load a suica/passmo card using our 28deg card, they would only accept cash (or jp credit cards).

        • @justin_tsoi:

          Yep, that’s one thing I noticed in Japan - issues with credit cards. That’s one area they’re surprisingly behind the 8 ball in. Very cash based still.

        • @justin_tsoi: japan, for some reason, hates elevators and wheelchairs. i can see that making pram-pushing extremely difficult. also, smokers everywhere, even inside restaurants. there's often no wall between the smoking and non-smoking sections in restaurants. japan is still backwards in this regard.

      • +3

        Unless you think airports as one of the tourist spots you are willing to spend time in on your holiday, I don't see the point of flying Singapore Airline to Tokyo when you can get a direct flight with QNATAS for pretty much the same price. Agreed Singapore is a better airline than QANTAS, also agreed Changi Airport is a beautiful airport, but still not worth it.

    • +22

      Oh please. It is easy. Travelling non-stop is more difficult imo.

      You should be wanting to go to Changi airport. Most gorgeous and cleanest airport ever!

      • +5

        Plus heaps of things to do for kids, Even a free cinema that plays kids movies

        • +10

          Yeah Changi has heaps of entertainment for kids. Not sure why people are saying a layover there is bad.

          And Singapore Airlines is rated very highly.

          Some people are picky I guess…

        • +3
        • +5

          can't the kids stay at home and watch movies at home instead?

        • @Ghost47: because a direct flight is objectively better. thats why airline booking websites allow you to toggle this.

      • I dont mind singapore at all but why do a half assed stopover if you dont have too. Crazy imo but to each there own.

        • +1

          Well, flights with layovers/stopovers can be cheaper than non-stop flights.

        • For sure, money talks. The never ending conflict between time/convenience vs $.

        • For those travelling from Adelaide & Perth, there needs to be a stopover somewhere along the way, regardless who you fly with.

    • +2

      Nothing against Singapore but direct is better for Japan.

      • +2

        0 options direct from Perth. Love the Changi stop over. Also if you have a SQ return flight you get $20 Changi voucher :)

        • Not on these fares - at the moment, the vouchers must be used by 30 March.

        • @jackspratt: Make that 31 March…. ooops!

      • Nothing against you but I prefer stop over and stay over as well. That way, one ticket I can visit 2 countries.

    • +3

      Teach your kids the magic of Starhub Japan SIMs.

      Tell them it's only $14 AUD for 2.4GB of data in Japan.

      Count out the savings in eneloops for them.

  • +1

    AirAsia has $494 with a stopover in Kuala Lumpar from Melbourne.
    Increases the time taken to get to tokyo to nearly a full day though, it gives you 7-8 hours in Malaysia if you want to save ~$150

    • this is showing on IWTF btw :)
      Either way, all good prices!

    • +8

      Singapore is full service though, so its likely cheaper than AirAisa if you were going to pay for bags/meals

      • +1

        ah neat! didn't pick up on that. Cheers

    • +1

      grandparents are there in KL so it's perfect for a short visit!

    • I did that trip last year with the wife and 2 young kids (1yo and 3yo). It wasn't great, but not unbearable. If you go through customs, KL airport is OK - shops and food, places for the kids to play. Inside the terminal was pretty boring though. Total trip time is a lot higher, but time in the air is not that much more so the time in KL was a welcome opportunity to charge devices, let the kids play, wear off some energy and make noise without annoying everyone on the plane.

      I probably wouldn't go that way again because my time is worth more that ~$150, but if you just need to get to japan on a budget or you want to do something in KL it's fine.

  • Finally it’s here! Been waiting for this.

  • +1

    Changi is one of the best airports if one has to stopover. It's huge and has all sorts of amenities including hotels and outdoor/ nature spaces.
    They run short city tours (f.o.c. from memory) but these fill up fast, so pre-book.
    Worth considering if prefer full-service to budget airline.

  • +4

    Good price for a full service airline but close to 15 hours in the air from Sydney is a killer for me. I'm waiting for the next Jetstar sale :-)

    • Agree let's search for similar prices with less stop over. If possible Malaysia. Food and hotel are Cheaper than Singapore.

      • +1

        The stopover time isn't that bad, it's the route that's the problem, going from Sydney to Singapore then to Tokyo isn't the most direct route you can take. Jetstar either stops at Gold Coast or Cairns so the flying time is not too long.

  • Perth dates, search not working

    • Hi gza,

      Can you give some details - I just tried a few of the supplied dates and I was shown flights. I tried on desktop using chrome.

    • Worked for me from Perth.

      • Not for me. When you go to book on the 'price beat' website it comes up '404 Not Found'.

        "Not Found

        The requested URL /MSFares.aspx was not found on this server.

        Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."

        • Hi Jstar1,

          What is the 'price beat' website? Can you tell me where you clicked this? (or even better, post a screen shot)

        • @IWantThatFlight: https://imgur.com/a/jiY2Y

          https://imgur.com/a/RD1PO

          Same thing happens on Chrome

          Don't think I'll visit Japan though, tempting, but on the hunt for some cheap Bali return flights, with Garuda or something not budget, then just relax, eat and chill at the hotel/resort, might even get a group to come with us…

        • @Jstar1: Hi - Thanks for that. I'll contact Price Beat Travel and let them know about this.

        • @IWantThatFlight: No problem :)

    Anyone had experience with the overnight stopover?

    I noticed there is accommodation package, starting from $40.

    https://www.singaporeair.com/en_UK/au/plan-travel/packages/s…

    Hotels are catagorised into A to K, which is 3 - 5 stars but can't seem to tell which hotel it is.

    • I've stayed short stay (a few hours) for a bit of sleep during a layover in Changhi airport and found it quite comfortable.

    • No need to book a hotel for overnight stopover in Changi imo. The airport is very safe even in the middle of the night and you see A LOT of people just sleeping in the airport with a blanket on.

      • +1

        No need to book a hotel for overnight stopover in Changi imo

        Whilst the airport might be safer than others, nothing beats your own clean, private bedroom with shower / bathroom facilities. That's my personal opinion anyway!

        Note: The in-airport hotels often book out, so be sure to book in advance.

        • +1

          Few years ago I had to spend the night at Changi cos of booking problem. While the airport was comfortable and safe, I couldn't fall asleep. I was told about a hotel just up the escalator, so that's where I ended up, switched off like a light bulb once I got there. Was only A$40 for a single bed. It's money well spent for precious sleep. Envy those who can fall asleep in public places though!

      • Not needed if young/fit travellers, but for travellers with children (infants/toddlers), someone with bad back?

        Just saying there's other reasons why a hotel sleepover is useful.

      • +1

        but police wakes people up to check their passport to make sure they are travellers

    • I spent one night for $40. Just a tiny room with single bed, which was clean, but that's all I needed. It was located upstairs. From memory they even had a gym.

  • Ah, no good for me, end of October my son still doing HSC exams, can't leave yet, such a great price with Singapore Airline but couldn't book, will give this a miss.

  • Any overseas flights during Easter vacation?

    • Yes, plenty but they are all insanely overpriced.

  • Cathay Pacific likely to match? been to Singapore wayyyyyyyyy to many times, want to visit Hong Kong…

  • +2

    In Changi terminals 2 and 3, take the kids to the free cinema. Or seat them at the free Osim leg massagers. There are a few full body massage chairs but these are normally hogged for ages by someone or a family.

    But then again, they're kids, when is it ever truly 'easy'?
