Free 'Emergency Home Assist (Lite)' with NAB Home (or Landlord) Insurance (2x $300 Tradie Callouts Per Year), Usually $123/Year

1050

Was originally going to post as a forum topic, but heck - it's a deal! Plz be nice to a poor Ozbargainer trying to help his fellow comrades.

Thought I would share my experiences and recommendation for home insurance. I've had a great experience with NAB, they use Allianz, but have Emergency Home Assist included. You can purchase separately for $123/year, so I guess it's a $123/year saving, but so far it's saved me $600. It's not new deal by any means, but I thought it'd be worth sharing.

cue personal story

Just got back from my honeymoon today on New Years Day! Started cooking lunch and the power tripped (or so I thought). Lights still worked, some appliances in the bedroom too… but kitchen and living-room power would not turn back on…. Fridge now without power, so need to get fixed ASAP. Father-in-law confirms that the circuit breaker is broken. Damn, I need an electrician… on a public holiday….

I remembered getting a letter with my NAB home insurance about 'emergency home assist'.

Call up the number - it's answered straight away. They sort out an electrician for me and <1hr later, I have everything working again…. nothing out of my pocket, no stress required.

Considering that NAB was the cheapest home insurance I could find anyway, at $921/yr…. this was awesome! You get two callouts per year, at $300 max each. If it's extra, you pay the difference, but it seems to me they have a dedicated 'on call team' that reply to most jobs and charge $300.

Not only this, but I have an investment property with NAB on a seperate policy. It also has NAB home assist. A couple of months ago, the tenant needed something urgently repaired, my property manager used 'NAB home assist' and I got the repair covered, gratis :)

So that's $600 saved so far. 100% recommend.

+1 for the very helpful post. i'll have a look at this when i have cause to buy home insurance (hopefully after buying a house in 2018).

    • Good luck with that, with the purchase price of your house i'm sure the insurance will be a motza!

Just got back from my honeymoon today on New Years Day!

    Happy New Year.

How was the honeymoon, any bargains?

    • +5

Will find out in few weeks/months and update us all..

      • +5

        That's not a bargain.

      Maaaaaaattttteeeee. Bargain Bonanza.

Followed the OzBargain Hotel Tips to the letter to negotiate a significantly better rate than any third-party website….. Flights with frequent flyer points (ANZ credit card)…. Citibank for no international card frees. Top honeymoon!

As for bargains to share…. can confirm that new neighbours give out a free box of roses with their Christmas card. House on the other side of them is for sale, if you want to take advantage…. might get an Easter and/or birthday gift too, but can't confirm yet.

  • Wait are you saying if your investment property mortgage loan is with NAB and it also comes with complimentary landlord insurance?

    • My PPOR (Principal Place of Residence) is with NAB Home Insurance

I also have an investment property with NAB's Landlord Insurance. Both include 'Emergency Home Assist'

      • Trying to get a sense of the emergency home assist.

Is the trigger to use it one of the covered areas on policy or you can use it just for fixing stuff around the house like calling electrician to fix flickering light??

        • Has to be on the policy, but the policy is pretty broad. I see it as RACQ/RACV roadside assist, but for your house.

My tenants broke a window and it was covered by this policy.

        • @The Wololo Wombat:

That probably is covered under accidental damage but assume no excess for you which is super good.

The electrician call at your place was it related to any covered event or the circuit breaker was out and you cud call on the policy?

Have you been with NAB home insurance for multiple years now? How was the annual increase. I am sick of haring from all the utility companies when I call them after 10% annual increase every time. The way the call center guys replay is that it's very normal to increase 10% every year. This has been going on with pretty much everything including Medical insurance, both the car insurances, Home insurances etc. This has been consistent for past 10 years. It's only the salary that hardly goes up by 1 - 2% every year. Most of the years 0% with excuses on bad market economy, losses or recession. (Wealth concentration gone nuts — The world's 500 wealthiest people got $1 trillion richer in 2017: https://t.co/ArIrfpRX4x)
The interesting thing is that all the insurances are going up in rapid rate regardless of me or my wife having no accidents caused by us in 2 decades of driving and also never claimed anything on houses either. I have done shopping time to time but never found a proper answer to this problem.

If NAB is reliable and doesn't increase premium ridiculously with no reason, I would consider moving my home as well as landlord insurance into NAB. This seems a good deal.

I've been with them for LandLords for a few years. It's just Allianz packaged up with NAB.

Did have to make a claim last year, which was a huge hassle and a lot of stress… but they did pay out.

Did not see a premium rise until I after I made a claim.

  • Home insurance costs double my current policy with Commonwealth and landlord double compared to Allianz, thanks anyway

    • I should say I used a NAB broker to get my low policy cost. Worth a try - call and ask to see if they can match.

If some is looking for 8 call-out package then RACV is cheaper

  • btw. how are these guys like on landlord's insurance

had a gutful of terri scheer

    • +1

They are Allianz. I had a payout last year that was a MASSIVE hassle. On the phone 3 times a day for weeks. But they did pay out in the end, and generously.

I'd recommend EBM instead of Terri.

EDIT. Two Years Ago… technically. haha.

Just made a call to them. I've been with NAB Insurance for many years now and have 5 different policies, however none of them include this. I must be such a highly valued customer I guess.

    • That sucks

    • +1

Vote with your wallet and move your policies!

      • I'm going to spend a few hours tomorrow doing just that.

        • Just tell em you are leaving and they'll update your policies for sure.

  • +1

Does anyone know what’s the best value home insurance out there for renter? Like zero excess and cover travel lugggage?

      • Wow 160$ per year is Cheap! Better than apple care for broken screen etc!

      • +1

EBM's Rentcover is no longer the best. Qbe has limited the cover and they've had massive internal servicing issues.

        • Keen to know more. Pls elaborate?

        • +1

@bohdud: From what I know (a friend who was insured there), the cover has been limited (such as flood not being covered among other things) and they've had an entire office resign all at once and they didn't tell anyone. They just moved the service teams elsewhere in the country and those people had no idea.

My friend made a very simple claim which took almost 8 months to pay.

        • +1

@imurgod: also noticed that many of content covers exclude mobile phones 😕

        • +1

@evgpek: yeah, or they charge a ridiculous excess for it. Read your PDS people and stick with Steadfast brokers since they have access to better policies.

        • @imurgod: cheers, good to know.

        • @bohdud: my pleasure.

  • These are interesting deals, but how do you know if the tradie is normal priced or super priced?
A simple callout probably starts at 150.

    • They arrange that for you. Today, being a public holiday, I thought $300 for call out + fix was good!

      • yeah agree - fairly reasonable this time of year.

  • Does it include landlord insurance too, which deals with issues related to tenancy/ tenants?

    • Yes.

      • How does it compare with EBM in terms of price and service?

  • +2

I did a quote and it is over 50% expensive than woolies as 20% than Westpac. May be you got some special price/discount

    • I used a NAB broker, who got me a good deal. May be worth contacting directly.

  • +10

I have to hand in my Ozb membership…

Had an electrical and plumbing fault whilst having NAB's insurance but forgot about it.

  • Has anyone seen any other insurers that offer something similar - or is this something unique to NAB ?

  • -5

And you needed your FIL to confirm it was the circuit breaker ?

    • +4

Yeppppppp. I’m not afraid to ask others for help! I thought it might be some internal fuse at first.

      • -5

Good. Someday, to improve general knowledge, you should look up the difference between a fuse and a circuit-breaker.

        • +3

What makes you think I don’t?

        • Hmmmm…anyone have any suggestions where AussieB could look to improve general social skills?

    • +3

Better to ask for confirmation before calling out expensive tradies. Worse still injured/dead because you tried being a smart arse.

  • +1

Could've just ran an extension cord to one of the working power points to keep the fridge going.

  • I wasted 30 mins calling up to get assistance only to find out that if your insurance policy is over 1 year old you won't have it included.
The fine print "you will receive a 12 month subscription to the Emergency Home Assistance Program (EHA Program) (also referred to as Emergency Home Assistance)
commencing from the inception date of your NAB Insurance policy, provided that your insurance premiums are paid and your insurance is not cancelled."

  • +1

Thanks Op for posting. Just cancelled my current insurance and moved. An extra $20/year for peace of mind.

  • I was with NAB for my investment property but have since moved to Coles insurance cause is cheap

    • my property manager used 'NAB home assist' and I got the repair covered

was hat easy seeing your name would of been on the policy?

      • Why would it be hard if he had delegated authority given that is what you'd usually do with a property manager?
