Sony Extra Bass Bluetooth Speaker SRS-XB40 $196 @ Harvey Norman

80

Really good price from Harvey Norman. Can be paired with several other speakers too.

Bought one for son with discount codes prior to Christmas (from Myer) for about $10 more. Very impressed with the performance of this speaker, so was determined to buy another. πŸ‘Œβ˜ΊπŸ‘

Ps. I don't know the expiry date of the price and "Unknown" was not accepted.

    It's odd that HN have made this cheaper than the cheaper xb30

    Fantastic speaker, can also price match at Officeworks for $186.20.

    • All the reviews seem to be pointing to xb30 is overall better for sound quality and bass. Just the xb30 is louder and heavier.

      I missed out on tgg deal!

        I've tested both the xb30 and xb40 at jb hi-fi and the I noticed the xb40 are definitely louder and bassier. However sound quality is pretty much the same, I ended up getting the xb30 from myer for $129 delivered.

          Have you also tried the UE and JBL competitors? I'm trying to decide on one to stick in my car (instead of modding the car's speakers).

          @xrailgun:

          Going by all the reviews. Most people say the Sony xb30/40 sound quality is far superior than the ue and jbl competitors

          @xrailgun:
          I've also tried the JBL Charge 3 which sound pretty nice, comparable to the sony's.

          I'm slowly getting rid of my 3 UE Booms to replace it with this.

          UE Booms were good because of the stereo sound, but it's not an exclusive feature any longer.

          @touchmylemon: Sony XB30 vs JBL Charge 3 mini review. Sony is a bit louder and has punchier bass and a crisper overall sound. JBL is fully waterproof, Sony is only water resistant. Both have usb out to act as a power bank to charge your phone etc. Both have about 20 hours battery life. Sony has the led lights, which can be turned off thankfully. I originally ordered the JBL but swapped it for the Sony after listening to both in store. Both great speakers for the price, can't go wrong with either.

          For those interested. The xrs30 is $125 at Bing Lee back in stock

        • +1

          @billy_bob: Yes I agree the sony's have a warmer, more pleasing sound while the JBL can sound a bit metallic. I think the waterproof casing has something to do with that.

          @xrailgun:

          The XB30 has a propriety plug and wall wart whereas most other speakers have a USB cable to charge. You'd need a 240v plug adapter for your car or find an obscure adaptor cable to be able to charge the XB30 in your car.

          @pizzip: Good point, this was almost a deal breaker for me but I decided 20 hours battery life is enough and I would typically charge it overnight. The sound quality was enough to swing me towards the Sony.

          @pizzip:

          That seems to be the general consensus too.

          For me water resistance isn't important but best bass and overall sound quality

          @xrailgun:

          Good thing about the JBLs is the form factor…fits in your car's drink holder, especially the JBL Flip 4.
          Get 4, one in each drink holder, front, rear, left and right all interconnected, quadraphonic sound, simple as, awesome.

          We tested the 3 models at JB too but felt the XB40 had a more impressive bass sound, which did not dampen the sound quality. We listened to a few other brands etc. too to compare.

          Downloaded a few albums onto an iPad yesterday as Apple is offering a 3 month free trial (cancel anytime) with
          "Apple Music Membership." Apparently $11.99 a month after the 3 months is up.

          My mother is hearing impaired and removed her hearing aids to listen to a few Irish songs; said she could hear them perfectly clear.

          @JediJan:
          And did Sony come out on top for quality and bass?

        • +1

          @hellohello123: Well, in our humble opinions the Sony did. We also played the XB20 and XB3O before the XB40 and then back again. Amazing, but agreed we both liked the XB40 best. That doesn't happen very often! 😊

        • +3

          @JediJan: Of course the XB40 will have fuller sound with deeper bass, it is almost twice the size/weight, and almost twice the price of the XB30. If you intend to play music really loud all the time, XB40 is for you, but I found at normal to moderate listening levels, the XB30 has a more balanced sound whereas the XB40 can sound a bit boomy. In the end, you really need to have a listen to both to decide for yourself. But I will say the XB40 is pushing the definition of portable at 1.5kg.

        • +1

          @billy_bob: Yes, agree it is a bit weighty for portability, but one for each hand makes for a good exercise workout! My old ghetto blaster of the eighties didn't get much of an airing either; seemed silly that people were prepared to lug those about too. But seriously, we primarily only wanted them for the home. I have a bit of hearing loss in one ear (from perforated eardrum; result of swimming) and can get annoyed with some music systems (including shops that are into loudness competition!) but I really enjoy listening to these. Just a personal preference really.

    • There's always a better deal! 😊

        can you compare the XB40 with JBL's Xtreme, that seems to be the worth comparison on the same level amongst each other

        • Cannot actually recall those ones. Of those we tested the Sony XB40 seemed best for our needs.

    Went to jb today and compared.
    Just based on sound quality and bass I'd say the xb40 is noticeably better.

    The treble sound quality sounds the same. But the bass on the xb40 sounds stabler.
    On higher volume the xb40 sounded good the xb30 maybe a little Less quality.

    So for me personally the bass stood more out on the xb40 and more noticeable

    But yes it comes to down to pricing and size. As it's pretty big!

    Now I'm torn

    • Apparently on one of the apps you have access to adjust the equaliser settings. Check the link first; I have not read those yet! I am still playing the music with the same flashing and fading lights sequence too! Really depends in what you want them for. 1.5 Kg; I wouldn't want to carry it with me all day, and I did buy it just for home. Not much difference in pricing between the XB30 and 40 though.

    • The higher the model number, the better the sound quality.
