  • If you don't need the Child Safety Covers, these are $2-$3 at Bunnings.

    • Does Bunnings deliver?

Without surge protection, yes. Otherwise they look to be $9 upwards.

  • A few of the Jackson boards are on sale at Woolworths, but not any with USB ports.

I don't trust jackson usb ports anyway. Had one that busted and damaged my device.

      • Thanks. I wasn't much interested in them anyway as they seem poor value even at half price.

Surge Protection 175J = virtually nothing- might even be detrimental as it creates a false sense of security if its used in a country area or area prone to spikes.
You need at least 500 joules at a bare minimum with a fast clamping time to get into the useful zone.

    • Yes. Even the old Dick Smith Surge Catcher 6 outlet powerboards were rated at 10 times this (50,000A/1,675 Joules with a <1 nanosecond respond time)! Bought a few at $1 each & still in use over 4 years later.

      • "1,675 Joules) with a <1 nanosecond respond time"
That's more like it, actually that's truly excellent for the price

      • I reached these a while back and also came to the conclusion that surge boards have a limited lifetime related to small surges that will go unnoticed. I've never replaced mine and they are probably also around 4 years old. You sound knowledgeable, do you know anything in regard to lifetime?

        • Thought about that too when I searched deals for when I bought them.

Would depend on use & likelihood of surges. Mine are installed in low surge area (underground power in middle of housing area - which should minimise larger surges from lightning or transformer / supply issues).

I've rebuilt devices wrecked by lightning strike to overhead power supply without surge protection (although most electronics contain minimal protection) - not pretty.

I can't see much need for surge protection in my use. The included insurance policy is more likely to expire over time than my devices.

          If concerned - update.
Others may have more knowledge about breakdown or failure of MOV components inside these devices - with time & minor surges.

Those child safety covers in powerboards suck.

Clunky and difficult to plug things in.

    • +11

yeah, I couldn't even take the safety covers off, had to get my 6 year old to do it for me

    • I think you'll find it's a different type.

These plastic safety plugs/caps are alright in my book - even if you don't have kids, they keep dust out of the spare sockets

      • why do we need to keep dust out of the spare sockets again?

        • +1

          OCD, of course.

    Price beat at Officeworks!

Bought one of the individually switched power boards just tonight for $10. Same price as the Bunnings 2-pack Arlec everyday but didn't mind as I only really wanted one.

(Was meant to be in reply to the above comment about other Jackson boards also half price)
