Optus Alcatel A3 @ Woolworths for $74.50

320

Optus (locked) Alcatel A3 at half price from woolworths. Not a bad phone for this price. It has fingerprint scanner and option to store multiple finger prints - hardly seen at this price point.
Also comes with free screen guard, and earphones (I know its not much, but $900 Pixel 2 does not come with either of those :) )

Eligible for Optus Bonus Gift Card Offer : $50 EFTPOS gift card after $30 recharge for new customers (looking at description - I guess it means you get a new number rather than porting existing number). Original $50 deal post

If you use this process you may end with final out of pocket cost of $45.8

  1. Use 5% egift card (you pay 74.5 * 5% = 70.8)
  2. Use Cashrewards (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/350739) - get 5$ back (70.8 -5 = $65.8)
  3. Activate and recharge 30$ following optus terms and conditions and get 50$ eftpos card (65.8 + 30 -50 = $45.8)

    • Hey Battler - have you tried this unlocking service, with this phone?
Wondering if this is tested successfully before I give it a shot. Cheers

      • I did, worked well.

I have this phone. My only issue with it is front camera is shite if using led - not that one would use it all the time anyway. The light messes with the shot. Everything else is actually ok.

  • Mediatek MT6737
    Quad-core 1.25 GHz Cortex-A53
    Mali-T720MP2

    • Also interesting to see this showing 1.5gb RAM and Optus showing 2gb RAM.

      • +1

      • +2

        Website/Box say 2 GB
        OS shows 1.9 GB

  • Out of stock?

  • +5

I bought one and found small printed paper in the box.
It said "There is an error , the correct bands are 3G B1,2,8 and 4G B1,3,7,8,38,40"
It means 3G 850MHz and 4G 850MHz are missing. So that this device is missing important frequency on Telstra and Vodafone.
And optus home page may not update until sold all of the stocks.

Could someone who has this phone please Test this out if possible. Would love to know this as for me a definite deal breaker.

    • Has anybody who has bought this phone been able to determine which bands it suppports? I was set to buy it but koakun's comment regarding potential error in the specs and lack of 3G 850MHz and some of the 4G bands is probably a deal breaker for me also.
I'm not sure exactly how one checks this on the phone itself. Perhaps using this app?

Picked one up today, here's the little correction notice, it still has band 28: https://i.imgur.com/AbIrYDK.jpg

      • Interesting.

Does anyone know if this is just disabled in the ROM? Could another firmware be loaded?

        • +1

I asked alcatel to unlock frequency (850MHz) and replied,

I am writing you in regards to your concern that you are asking about A3 phone (that you purchased from Optus) if support UMTS 850.
I would be happy to assist you on this one.
With regards to your concern our engineering team has replied that A3 phone doesn't support UMTS 850 and the website information provided is not correct.
And our engineering team has said " We can't help the customer support band unlocking, since the original change was part of a specific customisation."

        • @koakun:

          Great research. Thank you.

          @OzHunter68:

I purchased this deal before Xmas

Only recently I found out about the implications of the 850MHz band blockage:
          - the upshot is this phone is not fully usable on Vodafone and Telstra networks.
          - On Vodafone network: only allows calls, txt and 3G access, no 4G, so consequence is low data rates
          - On Telstra network: no calls but txt and 4G data work OK
          - Optus network is fully functional.

But: there is a work around, alluded to by andrew1879's post

I found using the MTS engineering mode app, I can reenable 850Mhz bands, on both 3G and 4G, such that it bypasses the above restrictions. Unfortunately, it is not a permanent fix because when the phone is restarted, the phone's Optus-branded firmware must reset these bands to off by default. I can use the MTS engineering app again to turn back on, each time after the phone is restarted. Not a perfect solution, but workable.

I've currently got this phone fully working, using the Belong $40 free credit deal on Telstra network

it is MT6737 with 1.5GB RAM

    • Do you have this phone or are those specs from gsmarena? I'm curious as the comment from shp says above that the OS reports 1.9GB.

      • +3

I checked the display unit out instore and can confirm that it makes reference to 1.9GB of memory in the Settings Menu

          Thanks, good to know.
