430

i purchased this about a year ago for $125. this thing works so well with cooking pizza. comes out like a woodfire oven pizza.

all you need to do is sit it on top of your existing 3, 4 or 6 burner BBQ and let it heat up.

Absolutely great value for money at this price.

normally $149.99 from the manufacturer direct https://www.bakerstonebox.com.au/collections/frontpage/produ…

Bunnings have now dropped this to $49 nationwide

I think that 'box' is its' little brother

      • aaaa, makes sense

    • The smaller one fits on a Weber kettle though, but it seems neither will fit on my Weber Q :(

    • do you think this could be used in the kitchen on a gas stove? Perhaps the smaller one rather than the full sized one.

I'm so keen for woodfire but alas, live in a unit and don't have a BBQ (yet..)

      • +4

Build a wood fired pizza oven on your balcony, will add to the resale value.

      • +5

Would probably work on the gas stove just heat it up slowly and make sure you have good fan extraction because of any of the cheese toppings get on the stone it will burn off fairly quickly,

Also a little tip for anybody using this put your base on grease-proof paper 1st put it in on the paper and give it a min or 2 then slide the paper out as it will start baking off the bottom of the base and wont stick to the stone,

this also means you can avoid having to use semolina on the bottom of your base which is bloody messy.

        Cheers

the trick with this thing is that it creates a tight space - if you exploit the same principle in a flat out oven* you can achieve great results.

*i.e. set your oven racks as close as possible, put an empty pizza stone on each rack, preheat, cook pizza on the lower stone. Even if one or both are regular baking trays it works very well.

      • I picked up a Woodfired store near over from Aldi and by the second use I had it down pat, I do it on thr balcony and it's great. The Aldi price was about 120 from memory but I picked it up a few weeks after it was put out for 69 bucks. If you want a true Woodfired taste you really need wood, pizzas will still taste great out of this and it would be more convenient if you have the right BBQ, but it still won't quite be Woodfired. Also the size of the one I got is about 40cm but the maximum pizza diameter is about 25cm. Also you will absolutely need a pizza spatula, Aldi has a kit with the spatula, rocket knife and stone for less than I could get the spatula on its own from ebay

  • Can't seem to find when the deals ends and Bunnings don't do online orders? Would have been nice to send my mates one for Christmas.

    • Aldi have similiar in catalogue for 23rd December, so suspect this in another Bunnings price match, expect price until then at least.

      • +7

nah, just a coincidence, Bunnings would never temporarily cut prices to a thwart Aldi's specials.

      • From memory the Bakerstone Pizza Box is the only one to have stone all around the oven the others only have it on the base.

  • Would these fit on a Webber Family Q?

I do like me some pizza..

    • Why not just buy the Weber pizza stone?

  • I assume you guys make your own bases too?
Anyone want to share their recipe?

I've found that using quality flour and cold fermenting the dough makes the biggest difference. Doesn't take any extra effort but you do need to plan ahead.

      http://slice.seriouseats.com/2010/09/the-pizza-lab-how-long-…

…well that and having a really hot oven to cook the pizzas in. I have the Bakerstone and it works great in my 3 burner BBQ.

…and don't use a rolling pin, it's not hard to shape the bases by hand.

      https://youtu.be/s4lL5I-UYbk

If you can't be bothered with the cold ferment then at least let the dough have 2 rises. Cover and let it double in size, knock it down, cut into portion size balls and let them rise again.

    • You need bread flour with the higher protein %. Wallaby is the readily available brand, at least in NSW.

      • If you know anyone with Costco membership, they have 12.5kg bags of bakers flour for $9.

        • Bread flour or just plain. The latter I assume.

        • @tightwad: it is labelled bakers flour which is essentially plain flour with a high protein content.

  • 1 1/4 cups lukewarm water (30° to 40)
    2 teaspoons honey
1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
3 cups unbleached all purpose flour, plus more for dusting
    1 teaspoon fine sea salt
    1 tablespoon olive oil

Bung it all in a food processor

Needs about 1/2 hour rest in a warm place then off you go.

  • Signs at Bendigo say $99.00 and staff say they are 99, but it scanned at $69.00 for the large one. Pallet and a half at that store.

  • Thanks OP - was considering buying one of these a year ago ($150) but was unsure. For $69 I reckon it's worth a shot. Grabbed one this afternoon.

  • Usually $99 from Bunnings. Grabbed one. This was one of Oprah’s favourite gifts for 2017

  • What would be the maximum size of the pizza in one of these? Someone suggested perhaps 25cm?

  • +1

i was so excited when i first saw one of these i bought it. However, im cautioning everyone bcos it doesn't do a good job.
The stone base gets so hot it burns the bottom of the pizza crust but the top doesnt get as hot so it leaves the
food uncooked. Heat distribution is so hopeless in this your better off just throwing the pizza in the oven
for a even cook. I even laid the pizza on a porcelain plate thinking that will change the heat distribution but it didn't.
Still burnt the base & left the top uncooked.

    • Turn the heat down. Also, don’t pack ingredients on like an average pizza shop. Traditional Italian pizza is made thin with simple quality ingredients

      • So for us who pack ingredients on, this is a no go?

        • just turn the heat down for a slower cook so it gives time for the cheese to melt before burning the base :)

This is the first round of pizzas I cooked on in this oven. Have perfected over the last year and they come out even better now.

Everyone loves when I throw a pizza party

It looks like some sort of deep sea creature.

On a serious note, does it handle really thin crusts? Do you also close the BBQ lid?

      • haha. yeah it handles thin crusts!

Always keep the lid open as the box retains a lot of heat once it’s heated up

Just grabbed one from Toombul QLD,

About 5 there, quite a large heavy box.

    Scanned for $49!!!

I had to triple check I got the right one, very happy.

    Merry Christmas Dad

  • Aldi one is the same price https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/350572

Anyone have experience with both? Pros/Cons?

  • +1

Gone from bunnings website does anyone know if the price is still valid in-store?

    • Price is still $49 in store. I just grabbed the last one on the shelf from Churchill SA. It would be worth calling the store to check if they still have any left.

  • Can I use this over a Coal BBQ?

    • +1

      According to the Bunnings website

Fits on most 2 burner and larger gas grills and 57cm (22.5") or larger kettle grills

So if it fits a kettle bbq which uses charcoal, then yes

  • I just purchased one for $49 from bunnings rockdale. A handful left. Ticketed price said $69

  • Confirming this is now $49 as per Bunnings website.

    What a bargain!

  • There are loads left at Marion bunnings SA

    • Also over half a pallet at Noarlunga - didn't come with the pizza paddle or turner though..

  • About 15 left at Alexandria (Sydney)

  • Plenty left in Rydalmere Bunnings, right at the front entrance and also near the customer service desk

  • Grabbed one of these the other day and have cooked 3 pizzas in it now.

I'd say this has been my favourite/best purchase of 2017.

The pizzas cook quick and taste great.

    • Great to hear! We did a pizza night the other night and after 1 year of having this, pizzas still came out delicious and still love it.

  • Still half a dozen left at Bunnings Prospect SA
